Injustice: Gods Among Us Annual #1 - The Hunt for Harley

5

Superman sends Lobo after Harley Quinn. Surely the Main Man can bring her in, right?

The Good

An issue with Harley Quinn, Lobo and Green Arrow written by Tom Taylor? Yeah, it's every bit as ridiculously fun as you could imagine. Lobo's introduction to the universe can get a bit tedious as he spews he signature words around one too many times, but that's vastly outweighed by the sheer amount of entertainment he offers and there's absolutely a handful of times where his banter really delivers. Plus, this is a hugely satisfying read if you've been following along with INJUSTICE: GODS AMONG US because there's plenty of well-executed nods to some great moments from the past. Lobo's mustache remark? Priceless. The argument over Oliver's hideout? Hilarious. It's just a blast through and through.

There's A LOT of hands working on the art in this issue and the transition from team to team is definitely a noticeable one, but many of the styles have great qualities. The opening (Xermanico) has some downright superb attention to detail with environments and brings about some gorgeously vivid coloring. As the madness truly hits the fan later on, the book becomes far more polished and exciting as Bruno Redondo and Mike S. Miller take over. There's some insanely lovable facial expressions to be found here and it really drives home Taylor's script. You can't help but smile at some of the faces Harley makes in this one.

The Bad

The jumps between noticeably different art styles is pretty jarring, but it only takes a toll during the scenes with Superman and Lex Luthor. There's just something about the facial work there that rubs me the wrong way, especially when compared with the rest of the issue.

Aside from that, I suppose the fact we need to wait two more months for more of this alternative universe is pretty dang bad.

The Verdict

We've gone two months without anything new from the INJUSTICE: GODS AMONG US universe and thankfully, this annual issue is more than enough to tide us over until the series returns in January. You know how you loved the Harley Quinn and Green Arrow team-up back in Year One? It's basically like that, but instead of being crammed into a digital copy, it's fleshed out in an annual-sized issue and throws in plenty of wackiness with Lobo. It's absurd in all the right ways and is sure to keep you laughing. Oh, and that ending? It seems like something so crazy that it could only happen in a fan fiction. And, you know what? It's pure awesome. Talk about ending on a high note, right?

I've been following this series as the issues are released in print, how does the annual fit into the series timeline? Does this issue reference events that have occurred in the digital series but haven't happened in print yet?

I haven't been following the printed releases since I bought them all digitally. What's the latest development with the printed version?

@k4tzm4n: Last print issue is the one where Superman tweets Batman's secret identity

Ah. My memory is a bit fuzzy, but that's well after Luthor comes up with a certain item to help Superman's forces and Kalibak's appearance, yes? If so, then you can read this and no other major developments would be spoiled for you.

Technically yes, but you'll have two minor plot points ruined. One of which you'll already know if you've played the game, though.

@k4tzm4n: Kalibak has definitely come and gone, as for Lex giving Supes a certain item, that's not ringing a bell for me, but it has been a month since I read the last issue. I think I'm going to forge ahead, spoilers be damned. Thanks for the heads up.

My memories kind of bad but I thought Green Arrow was dead. Anyway this issue was fun and I can't wait for this series to continue.

Oh. I thought so but a part of me was kind of hoping they brought him back (yes, I know they'd just have to kill him off later, and it probably wouldn't be smart story-wise, but still.).

Yeah, I agree. One of DC's most consistently enjoyable titles... is a weekly video-game tie-in.

I read the whole Injustice series digitally as it was being released, I HIGHLY recommend it. It was very, very entertaining.

I cracked up on that last page, and I'm pretty sure everyone wants to see how that will play out lol. The part about the cave confused me because I didn't realize that this issue took place before the finale, but once I figured that out it was all good. Definitely agree with the 5 star rating!
