Injustice: Gods Among Us #8 - Chapter 8 Review

4

The Justice League responds to the operation conducted against The Man of Steel.

Spoilers below!

The Good

You don't just take Superman's "parents" and think you can get away with it. Instead of focusing on how Kal-El's responding to this tactic, writer Tom Taylor shifts gears and instead presents how the Justice League responds. They don't only feel the need to help The Man of Tomorrow, they want to. He isn't just a dear friend, he's a man that has gone above and beyond to save them and billions others countless times before. He deserves their loyalty and they're happy to provide it. This not only motivates them to stand by Superman's side in this present, but also shows why these characters will firmly stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Big Blue when things begin to really unravel. Yes, some will lose faith in him, but for now it's building a good foundation on why they trust him and will believe in him when he takes more drastic steps.

As a Batman fan, I couldn't help but absolutely love by the conclusion. We know The Dark Knight's a master of stealth, but he snuck into the White House and managed to get the jump on the freaking President of the country... and then vanish. Go on, tell me that's not badass.

Putting the spotlight on a wider range of characters was much appreciated. I wish some characters had more dialogue (or any at all), but given the limited amount of space Taylor's working with, I was just happy to see them there. Despite that, the writing once again feels organic and has some heart behind it. I love Flash's line to Superman before he dives into the ice. The Justice League are just like us when it comes to Superman -- they admire him and little lines like that one make it transparent. It's almost heartwarming to see a hero act like a fanboy.

The Bad

Unfortunately, having more characters crowd the pages apparently took a toll on the quality of the art. There are some pages I love, but quite a few others almost feel rushed because there's a seriously lack of detail. Also, many of the poses appear too rigid and don't feel fluid despite the characters being in motion.

The story itself is fine and ends on a note that any Bat-fan will love, but overall it wasn't as powerful as the rest of the chapters. It primarily had me excited for what's to come instead of the present.

The Verdict

Gasp! The first four out of five for the series! Fear not, this is by no means a bad issue. It's still a great read and easily one of the best things you can get for $0.99. However, this issue feels mostly like build-up for the bigger things that'll come next. I can still confidently say this is a must read story even if you're not going to buy the game. It can totally stand on its own feet as a fantastic Elseworlds tale.

The Streak has finally been broken

This was my favorite issue so far! I liked how the Justice League entered the story and Batman coming back after some chapters of absence was great. He is fully aware of what is happening and he knows he has to mend the situation before it gets even worse. The pacing was good and the writting superb.

If I had read this some time ago my comments would have ended there, but after you mentioned you got the impression WW might be manipulating Superman that idea stuck in my head. And reading this issue I couldn't help but think WW had full control of the situation and things well just as she wanted. I guess I enjoyed this idea so much because it would offer an interesting twist to the "superman going bad" stuff we've seen other times already.

This is my favourite issue so far. Definitely not the first issue I would've gave four starts but everyone is entitled to their opinion. Loved the batman scene at the end too.

I thought it was kinda weird some heroes and villains apparently died off-panel in Metropolis.

Great issue! I actually liked it alot better than last weeks which felt really short to me. This one felt alot longer by comparison and it was awesome seeing all those characters. I have to agree with the art problem though. It was noticably rushed ESPECIALLY that one panel where Green Lantern had basically no detail on his costume.

On a side note does anyone else think that Captain Cold will be in the game now? I noticed that he was the only one out of all the villains shown in the chapter that had a major redesign. His redesign also had the visual style that the rest of the NetherRealm designed characters share.

My only problem with the issue is that the dialogue was unintelligent enough to the point where it had me re-reading a few lines thinking.. "Did they really have this character say that?" Just poor word choices but other than that it was a decent filler issue for future events. The Batman scene was the best in particular.

Was I the only one confused about why Raven (at least I think that was Raven) was all red skinned and demonic here? You know, like she is only when she's under Trigon's influence?

Still haven't been able to get #7 yet :(

I loved MK9. The whole alternate timeline thing they did was brilliant. It was great how they made the characters turn out different instead of exactly how they were in the other timeline. Especially Raiden (who was my favorite) and Liu Kang. They made them mostly the same, but different. I think that's what they're going for in this game, and if so, I really look forward to it.

Probably just a particularly drastic design change for this universe. It seems odd that Raven would be changed to heavily when everyone else just gets a slightly different costume, but its the only real explanation I can think of.

This is intense! Every single week some punk is provoking Superman. You think bad guys would learn already.

It doesn't really look like she was under his influence, she probably mastered all of her powers, including the one she inherited from Trigon.

@DarkShadows: unless I've missed something, mastering her powers doesn't equal red skin/angry demon face. If this is her default look in the game, I will be disappointed... not a fan of Raven's demonic appearance.

Pa Kent was the most badass character in this issue. :D

Edit: Wait... That was the earlier issue. My bad.

Took a lil plunge huh? Ah well, nothing wrong with that. Still excited for it!

Possibly Steel, Black Lightning and his daughters, Superman's rogues. And someone whom Nightwing and Raven had a personal relationship with.

@KnightRise: I was thinking a Titan like Donna (again) or Starfire.

This is such a good series, why the hell isn't Tom Taylor writing some of their main line books?

Batman's role in this issue was my favorite!

Glad we finally got to see some of the other characters like Nightwing and Hawkgirl, even though they didn't have any lines.

That's an excellent question.

/Facepalm. Of course. I have no idea why I didn't think of that.

WW is looking good and not that 52 look, not Plateauing on her muscles.

This was definitely my least favorite issue. Like the review said, it wasn't bad, but it was definitely worthy of a lower score than usual.
