Injustice: Gods Among Us #7 - Chapter 7 Review

5

The United States Government won't stand idly by as the Man of Steel begins to enforce his call for a global ceasefire.

The Good

You really didn't think the world would take a Superman dictatorship sitting down, did you? Chapter Seven puts the limelight on the United States Government and how they're reacting to Kal's new mindset. Writer Tom Taylor produces a sharp script ("Unless gravity malfunctioned!") and once again gives us an ending that'll leave us counting down the seconds until next Tuesday.

Fret not, there isn't a completely cliche plot using kryptonite to counter Big Blue here. Instead, Taylor brings in a character that no one would expect and executes a plan that leaves us wondering how Superman will react next. It's totally out of left field and I absolutely love it. It's a particularly dark tactic and it's disheartening to think the Government would do such a thing, but desperate times call for desperate measures, right? After all, these are the same people that called five to ten innocent casualties "acceptable" a few pages earlier

While I do have some issues with the artwork, overall I think it's an enjoyable viewing experience (especially if you're going panel by panel on a mobile device). What really stood out to me was the stellar use of motion and impact. Twice, characters are struck across the face and both times you can really feel the impact thanks to some harsh use of rippling on the cheeks. The coloring is also great as Superman devastates a drone. The explosion contrasting the clear blue sky looks solid.

The Bad

Wonder Woman fans, don't check this out based on the cover! She may be taking up the entire cover but she's nowhere to be found in the pages of the issue. So please, don't only buy this one in hopes of a Wonder Woman focused story. That said, you should still buy it anyway. Why? Because it's awesome, that's why.

Jheremy Raapack's art is a bit rough at times, most notably with the faces. Superman felt a bit too bulky at times, particularly in the panel where he's flying at the drone (the chest symbol seems like it has too much depth). Also, when Superman enters the house it appears his cape is torn in one area, but I have no idea how that would have happened.

It isn't frequent, but every now and then character's eyes are missing pupils/irises and it makes said characters look especially creepy. I suppose that's fitting for a frightening take on Superman, but jarring when it happens to Pa Kent.

The Verdict

INJUSTICE: GODS AMONG US may be a short read but don't think for even a second that means it's lacking in content or quality. This digital comic can easily hold its own with some of the best comics out there. The characters are written exceptionally well and the plot continues to shock us each and every week. In my interview with Tom Taylor, he said he's "in for the long haul" with this series and hopes we are too. Well, I can confidently say I would love to see this comic carry on just as long as any other ongoing out there. Each issue is simply brilliant and you really shouldn't be missing out on this one.

You definitely don't need to get the game to enjoy this comic. So far this is totally a story that can stand on its own. In the interview, Tom even said he plans on continuing the comic after the game comes out.

Loved it.

This series keeps you on your toes the entire time, really fantastic work. @Mucklefluga,

I can't wait to see the regime forming.

@Mucklefluga: The comic isn't even really tied in with the game completely. We've already been told that a character who died in this book is alive in the game, and that that's not going to be addressed. We also know that this book may continue well beyond the game's release. To that end, it's just a very well-written and interesting "what if?" story, and definitely worth looking at. I don't even know if/when I'll get Injustice, but this comic is one of the highlights of my week.

@k4tzm4n: @SNascimento: @akbogert: Hmmm i may start buying the issues then, but definitely after i get all the 'Batman: Li'l Gotham' comics that are currently out.

@Mucklefluga: Just $7 and you'll be caught up :P Guaranteed you won't regret it.

DC thought this would be a BOMB by making it attainable only through the app (i think?) and a buck a pop. this is without a shadow of a doubt one of the best books of 2013.

i hope with the collectors edition of the game they give folks the trade version... i would definitely go put money down for it!

You'll never guess the mysterious foe they bring to face Superman, unless you read the wiki page which shows all characters in the issue. :P

Nice review as always.

@mikeclark1982: Well, seeing as the comic is going to outlast the game's release, I don't think that's going to happen...

That said, it's actually not that much cheaper if you consider that they're releasing every three issues in print for $3.99.

Threatening Superman, the funny thing is that I can see The U.S government trying something like that

It felt so short though. And I want more Batman!

You had me at Superman dictatorship, Katz ^_^ Awesomeness...!

Posted by Stormbox

I dont like this series. Like others have said supes feels very out of character

I dont mean jokers death, im talking about this dictator crap, its so forced

If some douchey dictator took over the dcu superman and batman should be fighting together not against each other. This game looks epic but i dont think ill be buying this beyond issue 9 and ill treat the story mode as a crappy elseworlds like act of god

Honestly, i think this series get so much praise because no superman fans are reading it

Superman has every reason to do the things he's most definitely going to do.

I assumed that Ma and Pa Kent were already gone in this universe, because of the reveal at that press conference. It really seems like a major oversight on Clark's part.

Posted by MeloDet

@Stormbox: He isn't even a dictator yet though. All he has done(aside from spur of the moment killing Joker) is to remove a corrupt leader, and stop the U.S. Government from killing innocent civilians. If he does just suddenly switch from where he is now to conquering the planet, then you may be right, but as is. I don't see him as that out of character yet.

it actually could contain the trade version...it says it comes with a "Special Collector's Edition of a brand new DC Comics series" but not what that series is...as it is the Collector's Edition is already worth it just for the awesome statue that comes with it

plus you get a digital download of Justice League: Doom and New 52 costume skins for Wonder Woman, Batman, and Superman

"Someone can't love a series this much! Clearly they're being bought!"

This series is being widely praised. The people over at Forbes have given most of the issues 10/10, too. I'm incredibly impressed with this series and I've loved every issue, therefore I have no gripe giving them 5/5s. As you can tell by the comments in each issue's review, I'm clearly not the only one having a great time with the series.

Big mistake. Big, BIG mistake there by the US government.

That was the last thing you'd want to do to a man like Superman with the mindset he was in.

R.I.P. Democracy. Hello King Superman, you, sir, deserve to rule !

Just keep giving us good reviews (as long as I agree with it, I'll call it good LOL)

I think it's a fantastic series thus far (it'll interesting to see if Taylor can keep this up for long) and "DC's What If.. series" is a perfect description why people should be buying it (I have no interest the game either).

Posted by Stormbox

@MeloDet: I think those troops in the prologue were kind of a dead giveaway about his dictator status in the future

Granted, there are other possibilities like starro mind controlling them, but so far the story is telling me superman is some evil dictator and i dont like that at all

Posted by Equonox

Meh I'd give this issue a 3/5, at best...not enough happened. Ma and Pa Kent kidnapped...whatever. After seeing the Joker's spine blown out by Supes, I expect a little more oomph from these issues and the last 2 didnt deliver.

Posted by HellknightLeon

I would think they got paid if It was rated 6/5 stars. 5 stars means you "should" pick this up. I don't think paying CV would be a spike in profits for anyone. Wait! Maybe thats why Babs left! Maybe she was getting to close to the truth!

Sooooo, Mirror Master will be playable?

Once again i can't praise this series enough! The way it pulls in so many characters from across the DCU in completely unexpected ways is mesmerizing; I especially love the fact that villains are interacting with characters other than their established heroes. I've said it before but this series feels global, and more connected than any DC Comic I've ever read. To me it represents everything i love about Marvel!

I'm starting to feel personally insulted that Tom Taylor doesn't have a mainstream writing position within the company. He said in the interview he's quiet free to do as he pleases and from that it is quiet telling how editorial DC has become; no doubt most stories by other writers would be equally as satisfying if they were given greater freedom and left to mess with things a bit. I'm bursting with anticipation for next weeks issue and I'm personally hoping its 100 pages long... I just can't get enough!
