Injustice: Gods Among Us #6 - Chapter 6

5

The Joker's devastating attack on Metropolis forces the Man of Steel to change his methods.

WARNING! Spoilers ahead!

The Good

Last week's chapter of INJUSTICE: GODS AMONG US provided a quick break from the shockingly bleak events that took place over in Metropolis. It delivered a hilarious focus on Green Arrow and Harley Quinn, but now we're diving back into the dirt and it's time to see how Superman is holding up after he "killed" The Joker. I use quotes because it looks like he's a key character in the game and seeing as this is a prequel, I'm taking his demise with a grain of salt.

Picking up a day after the tragic events, Superman has a quite an epiphany -- he has the power to change the world, so why sit on his hands as humanity slowly self-destructs? I know many fear they're about to see Kal turn into some super evil and bloodlusted dude, but that's not the case here. In my opinion, his prior actions against Joker were absolutely understandable. In the blink of an eye, the woman he loved, his unborn child, and a city filled with millions of people (including close friends and co-workers) were all slaughtered. Frankly, I think it would be unrealistic to not lash out after something that horrific.

Mike S. Miller nails the facial expressions once again. Superman's eyes alone convey the powerful emotions going on behind that durable exterior. You can't help but feel his pain, anger and finally, determination. Additionally, the panel of him confidently walking into Bialya's capital building is beyond intimidating.

I've suspected Wonder Woman will play a primary part in Superman's actions -- almost as if she's his puppeteer (based on game trailers).  Her brief bit of dialogue here has me once again thinking she'll serve as a driving force behind his influence and how far he'll go to chance the world.

While this issue doesn't deliver a twist, that by no means makes the cliffhanger less powerful. Those final words from the Man of Steel combined with the look in his eyes really sinks in. Simply put: it's on.

The Bad

I suppose I can understand the blood still being on his hands (the symbolism is strong enough for me to ignore it not being blown off in the wind during flight), but how'd he manage to grow so much stubble in just one day? I'm not the biggest Superman expert around, but does he really need to shave everyday or else he'll get a five o'clock shadow? This is hardly something that detracted from the overall reading experience, but it's something that left me wondering about that silly little aspect of the character.

The Verdict

While this is obviously a must read digital series for anyone excited for the game, I dare to say it's also a must read for anyone searching for a stellar story. Each digital chapter might be a quick read (under two dozen pages), but that most certainly doesn't make it any less compelling and engrossing. This is without question the best thing you'll get for $0.99 every Tuesday.

Its super stubble I suppose! But yeah I guess it could be considered silly, even if it can be something that people (like me for instance) that can relate to if we need to use a razor every day just to prevent that shadow from becoming too apparent on our faces. Good review though regardless, Katz!

I say it for every single issue but these books have far surpassed any story I've read in the New 52, its a shame this isn't mainstream canon!

I don't need to see early days/origins just start a comic by throwing the reader right into the midst of the established heroes and their relationships. It makes for far more enjoyable reading.

Batman isn't in this issue :P

I viewed it as symbolism. This is something that Kal can't just easily wash off of his hands -- it's going to stick with him.

This Series and game seems to me to highlight the difference between Batman and Superman. Batman is physical vulnerable but mental invulnerable. Batman would not go as far as Superman because he is so determined not let the Joker win. Now Superman is phsyical invulnerable but mental vulnerable. This their biggest difference.

I would say Tom Taylor should take over Justice League from Geoff Johns (Since Tom made every character get an equal part) and this will hopefully keep Geoff Johns on Green Lantern.

He is functionally equivalent to a human in most respects considering his hair growth and appearance, so why wouldn't it make sense to assume he shaves each day? IIRC, TAS showed it that way as well.

I don't know anyone who can go from clean shaven to scruffy like that in less than 24 hours. Do you?

@k4tzm4n: I haven't read the comic yet, but from your review it sounded like it was just 5 o'clock shadow, in which case yes. I know several people who get visible stubble by the end of the day if they clean shave in the morning.

Why Superman doesn't do what he just did is a question that have to have come up in everybody head one time or another. He is all powerful, why does he allow so much misery in the world if he has the power to stop it? I hope they can actually make the regime a force that you can argue in favor of, not just some super powered dictators shaping the world in their image.

Also, I never really thought WW as a driving force behind Superman, but it actually makes sense. Will she be more determined to their new world order than the Man of Steel himself?

This comic would easily be 5 stars for me, but the art is lackluster. WW in particular looks very bad.

Man, this story is awesome, but just as said, the art is lackluster. This is my favorite DC Digital read right now.

I love this series. But I have a question. If all of this happened in the span of two days. How did Superman grow stubs so quickly. Did I overlook something?

Superman as a tyrant ruling by force… where have I seen that before?

(he asked sarcastically.) But seriously… After last week… Harley… The Quiver! this comic shouldn't be as great as it is.

This series is awesome. The only thing I'm wondering is why Superman couldn't do stuff like this before? It''s not like he killed anyone in this issue. I mean, his interfering might sour relationships between the US and whatever country, but was that really it? He didn't think it was his place to step in? Kinda stupid. I like this version of Superman x100 times better than that boy scout they have in the main universe

Also, I liked how Wonder Woman's boobs in this version were so big that they had to expand the eagle wings on her chest. Again, x100 better than the regular WW ; )

You know why this series is so good? I mean, the art and writing are great, but why it really hooked people in. It's because it's doing something bold, different, and irreversible. I mean, yes, it's non canon and for the purposes of a video game, but imagine if the mainstream comics did something on this level. It's the reason people were so disappointed with Death of the Family; the status quo always remains. In Injustice, there's been actual, tangible, albeit rapid development in the universe. Superman's had his moral event horizon, The Joker's dead, etc, etc. If this kind of thing happened in normal comics, maybe more people would care.

@Sleepbutnodream15: It goes against everything Superman believes in, you're not changing the world by forcing them to change. If Superman died, the world would revert back to anarchy and chaos.

You can't force change.

How come whenever Superman is part of an authoritarian regime Wonder Woman is always there? Can Superman gets with Diana without them destroying the world?

@VaizD: This series reminds me why I loved the ElseWorlds comics that DC used to release in the 90s. Great new directions for characters, stories that can't (won't) be done in mainstream continuity.

I really enjoy out of continuity stories like this. They give me the what if.. moments that I always enjoy imagining. And is fun to read this superman.
