Injustice: Gods Among Us #5 - Chapter 5 Review

5

Harley Quinn flees custody and is confronted by Green Arrow. But it turns out the Emerald Archer is actually trying to protect her from the Man of Steel.

The Good

While INJUSTICE: GODS AMONG US has delivered a mostly dark and shocking tone, it's also granted writer Tom Taylor plenty of wiggle room to incorporate some solid moments of levity (the book toss, Flash carrying Batman, etc). This issue takes a short break from the prequel's dramatic events and delivers a full serving of lighthearted comedy.

Following Harley Quinn and Green Arrow, the two deliver an absurd amount of quips that'll keep you smiling. Watching the two banter back and forth is overwhelmingly entertaining and there's some exceptionally good lines thrown in there (the "arrow cave" conversation, for example). I mean, there's even an entire chat just about Ollie's infamous boxing glove arrow and the logic behind having it is hysterical. Shouldn't that alone earn your curiosity?

STAR WARS: DARTH MAUL - DEATH SENTENCE illustrator Bruno Redondo once again teams-up with Taylor and this issue looks great. There's a more than adequate amount of detail and depth in every panel but what really shines here are the facial expressions. This issue thrives on the personality differences between Ollie and Harley, and Bruno's work does an exceptional job conveying that. It's great seeing the Batman villain's mood shift drastically throughout the issue and Ollie commonly has a fitting look of being unamused with her antics. Additionally, you have a heart of ice if the last page doesn't make you smirk.

The Bad

While taking a quick departure from the dire and depressing events going on between Batman and Superman certainly is a nice change of pace, I can't help but miss it, too. Last week's cliffhanger was absurdly powerful and it left my mind racing. How will Batman and Superman react immediately after such an incident? Sure, we'll get those answers next Tuesday (or at least I assume so), but for now, I'm left selfishly missing a follow-up to that cliffhanger.

Oh, and while the mallet scene did give me a laugh, I feel as though she'd notice a huge weight difference between the two.

The Verdict

INJUSTICE: GODS AMONG US #5 takes a break from the bleak Superman/Batman/Joker conflict and instead provides us with a consistently funny and fairly heartwarming chapter. Filled with laughs and an engaging "team-up" between Haley Quinn and Green Arrow, this digital comic has won me over yet again. I really can't recommend this title enough.

Hmm, actually, the idea of being more light-hearted appeals to me. The last few issues were awesome, but seriously, we need a break from the depressing stuff.

This issue was a bit funny, but it kinda caught me off guard

Very charming issue. I was surprised by how much I actually enjoyed it. It makes me wonder if Superman would do the same thing to Harley, as he did to the Joker.

I loved the banter between Harley and Ollie. The arrow cave thing cracked me up. The ended though kinda caught me off guard, with how different it was. I'm loving this series, it actually got me sold on the game.

I laughed out loud several times, and was smiling throughout the rest. From the first page I thought it was going to go real dark, but it did not, and I think it was better for it. Some very good exchanges here for sure, and a reminder that this game isn't just going to be a brooding dystopian nightmare.

I really really hope this continues to be an ongoing series or a MAXI series after the game is released like DCU Online , the story line is well written, and has everything from fake mustaches to brutal "deaths".

What's weird is that this series has been more interesting than the entire Death of the Family arc.

Does Injustice take place in mainstream DC Universe or is this just a twelve issue shot.Because I thought that Superman and Lois Lane werent married in the revamp of Superman.

I think for its purposes you can class it as AU. Doesn't happen within New 52 continuity.

I'm sure Harley was aware of the difference, it was just a gag to scare Ollie first before she decided to pull out the gun. Like joker shooting a BANG flag out of the barrel of his gun before it launched into someone's skull.

Loved Green Arrow in this issue though. Hope they incorporate Deathstroke into this story eventually somehow.

@thatcoolguysteven: I would like to see it extended to, but its a prequel leading to the games story, I hope it will have a conclusion after the game ends. or it continues.

And does anyone know how many issues Injustice is suppose to be?

A great new chapter! This series has seriously surpassed all my expectations. Though I do find it kinda weird that this side story had the best art of the series so far.

My only gripe is that the mallet would've otherwise killed GA, unless Harley feigned the mallet mishap for metacomedy

Great issue and I am dying to see what happens next.

That mustache part was hilarious!

I loved it.

I know right, I read the whole thing including all the tie ins. I was tired of the joker by like issue 2!

In other news:

I loved this issue. It seriously made my day. This is the coolest version of Ollie I've seen in a while. Harley was also great. But seriously if this version of GA is in the game I'm probably getting it.
