Injustice: Gods Among Us #36 - Chapter 36

5

This is it, Injusticers. It's the final chapter of the digital series... for now.

The Good

Chapter 35's jaw-dropper left us all speculating what could happen next. I've heard plenty of interesting theories and had a few of my own, but as far as I can tell, no one predicted what Tom Taylor had in store for us. In a book full of shocking moments, this one is disputably the very best. Being as spoiler-free as possible: let's just say it's something that needed to happen and was delivered in a totally unexpected manner -- a manner which will likely make you gasp, smile and possibly even clap when all is said and done. To elaborate any further would potentially ruin the surprise and it's definitely something you want to experience with all of the context. There's been an immeasurable amount of build up and tension in the series and this was a fantastic way to wrap things up (for now, at least).

Meanwhile, Taylor continues to craft Superman into the despicable and weak-minded man we see in the video game. In a twisted way, Kal's decision in the last issue did have some logic behind it, but his response upon discovering something in this chapter just goes to show the Superman you love and respect is dead. There's even a short yet powerful blurb to let that point really sink in, too. It's seeming more and more likely Taylor wanted to deliver that feel-good Superman story from the past right before he made the iconic character completely irredeemable. It's unfortunate who the Man of Steel becomes, but this series has done a remarkable job making him walk a path that could indeed justify his drastic transformation.

Sometimes Mike S. Miller's facial expressions can come off as a bit too exaggerated, but in this case, they do a fantastic job bringing the raw emotion front and center. Disappointment, anger, pain... each expression is crystal clear and truly brings these shocking moments to life. Without giving anything away, there's a superb sense of motion and power behind the action sequence and the colorists choosing to make certain backgrounds vivid was an excellent decision. These bold backgrounds in key moments really sold the scenes and gave them a great amount of intensity.

The Bad

It only applies to two panels, but Hal Jordan's hair is still black! Also, the heavy use of large panels and splash pages makes this a very quick read, but that's okay since you'll probably want to read it all over again once you're done.

The Verdict

I have good news and bad news. The bad news is this is the last chapter (annual aside) until 2014. Tragic, I know. However, the good news is that Tom Taylor and everyone else involved left us with a beyond stellar issue that'll make you want to cheer. This chapter also serves as a brilliant way to further the divide between Bruce and Clark. What occurs could have easily been treated as the series' conclusion and we'd be left assuming 5 years transpire before the game begins. But no, we're going to get even more in January and that, my friends, is very awesome and absolutely something worth looking forward to.

I just made an account to thank you for all your amazing reviews on this story arc. I've been following this since the beginning and I always check your reviews to see if my outrage is justified haha. Your reviews have been spot on and I love that you also hide spoilers for the people who haven't read the issue yet.

This has been a super crazy run and issue #35 and #36 have just been crazy. I kept hoping that maybe Martian Manhunter was Bruce in disguise but too bad :( The other surprise in this issue was very pleasant, as you noted.

I can't wait for the comics to come back in 2014, and I hope you will continue with your amazing reviews :)

HOLY F*CKING SH*T! Those punches Alfred dished out on Supes felt so very good. Every word batman and Alfred said about this whole situation was also true.

If they don't make Alfred the next DLC character, something is seriously wrong.

Maybe for some random weak-willed simpleton who has kryptonian powers and wears Superman's costume but not for the real Superman.

I find it weird that Wonder Woman wasn't in the UN thing.

Anyway, it was a fantastic run. The writing was great from start to finish, the artwork couldn't quite keep up though, some issues were terrific, others were just ok.

Look foward for more.

WOW. I mean... just wow. I've loved "Injustice..." and I still can't belive how good it's been. I mean... this is a comic that only exists to promote a little bit more a videogame, a FIGHTING GAME to be exact, and yet it has given one of the best elseworlds in a while. The plot was awesome and even if I still don't believe that Superman could ever turn this evil, it works really well. Issues like "The Man of Yesterday" have been just outstandingly good and I've loved the ending, Alfred was the best choice ever to kick Superman's ass.

Seriously I'm amazed, surprised and excited of what could possibly come next. It's too bad we have to wait until 2014.

is it just me or is superman the worst fighter in this comic. The only things he beat up were kalibak and his flunkies..and i guess batman but he has no powers and doesnt count here lol...captain atom gave him the business, alfred gave him a 21 jump street head butt and beat down, heck even pa kent stopped him from swinging on green arrow. its like anyone with super strength can hold their own with him or beat him easily in this comic but hes supposed to be turning into dr evil.

This has been a fantastic series I can't wait for the Annual and when the series starts again in January. I've loved this title so much I've gotten the Digital and Print issues. and @k4tzm4n Tom Taylor hinted that he might be writing another digital video game tie in but too a certain Arkham series most people know and love.

My one grip about this and I'm probably the only one who thought this but the whole scene with Alfred pummelling Supes was stupid and weird people just seem to keep getting angry at Superman and lashing out because he hurts them yet they don't understand what he's just been through plus I find it PIS that a silly super pill can give someone the strength to Hurt Superman I know it's modified by Kryptonian tech but this is just me, Superman should've been able to stop Alfred easily but this is my inner fanboy crying out so i'll stop now...RANT OVER! Overall still loved this though.

He is currently tied with Gandalf.

Oh man, I didn't know this was the end? For some reason I think I assumed there would be 52 issues...dang

I Think Tom Taylor has done about the best job someone could do in trying to mold Clark into a killer and ruthless dictator....but no matter how well a job someone does in telling the tale, the tale is still a bit much to swallow.

It doesn't matter how much tragedy Clark experienced...there are some things he just wouldn't do, and that's where stories like this fail. Killing Joker is excusable as a fit of rage (and that would have been an interesting story, to see Superman having deliberately killed a simple human and deal with that).

When he starts doing things like beating Ollie to death...then that's just out of character...even for the character that he is meant to have become by this stage. As gradual as they try to make the transition, there was still a very sudden crossing of a line that just didn't fit with the character.

On the other hand, it's an alternate universe so who is to say it was the same character to begin with?

One thing I did like was in issue 34 I believe, Taylor got it exactly right when he addressed Superman killing. Snyder could really take lessons from him.

There is always another way.

And Gregg, not sure why Hal Jordans hair being black bothers you so much. a) it's an alternate universe and b) He's been shown a bunch of times in the New 52 with black hair.

@muyjingo: If there's something in an issue which "bothers me so much," it would be reflected in the score as well. Hal's hair being black is so very obviously a very small gripe and only briefly mentioned. If it was worth discussing or if I felt it actually hindered the issue, I would have elaborated. And this is an alternate universe which is based on the video game -- and in the game, his hair is brown.

Well, this post seems like time very well spent. Thanks for that :P

PS. This is the end... for now. The review states the series will return in January, 2014.

@k4tzm4n: I was guessing it bothered you a lot because it isn't the first time you've mentioned it. Far from it. So I thought I'd mention it since there won't be reviews for a while.

I thought it bothered you because the character traditionally has brown hair, not because it didn't match the game. I forgot all about the game after I beat single player as the skillmatching is horrible and I suck. It's not so much fun being beat mercilessly over and over....

Anyway. Thanks for covering this series and highlighting it since it's inception. I've enjoyed your reviews and having a forum to discuss the series.

@muyjingo: An understandable assumption. I actually remember people being confused about whether it was Hal or Kyle when the character was first introduced.

Thank you.

Is actually quite believable what happened since Alfred caught Supes by surprise. I'm sure if Alfred stayed and didn't took off with Bruce, Supes would have heat vision him out of orbit.

I suppose the blood is a bit excessive but the idea is that the pill should be able to help regular humans stand with Superman's people to fight "evil". I guess maybe he shouldn't be able to hit Superman that hard, but then again, Supes was caught by surprise. And maybe Batman was right: maybe Superman really did want someone to hit him (from #35) and wanted to feel some pain.

Yeah I guess so plus he had just been hit by a blast equal to ten nukes but I do agree that blood was a bit excessive. It's just my inner Superman fanboy just obviously didn't like seeing my favourite character getting pummelled like I'm sure most Batman fans did not like seeing him so helpless against Superman (even though that's how it should be). It was still an amazing issue and I can't wait for the Annual and for January once the series starts again.

Well I have to say Alfred was epic. Also, not all of the heroes looked happy at the end there, and who warned Batman in the last issue, anyway?
