Injustice: Gods Among Us #30 - Chapter 30

5

Remember when Superman didn't want to heat vision your face off? We get a glimpse of how Clark was back then. Oh, memories...

The Good

Can you believe we're already up to chapter thirty? It feels like only yesterday my jaw dropped from the initial series of bleak twists and turns. Anyway, in this issue, writer Tom Taylor grabs our hand and takes us down memory lane. Instead of following-up on last week's violent turn of events, the writer is aiming to give us a break from the gloom and doom, much like he did with the Harley Quinn and Green Arrow team-up. Except instead of big laughs, he's taking us back in time, delivering a classic vibe and proving he's more than capable of writing an inspiring and humble version of Big Blue as well. We jump back to a happier time and, I'll be honest, it's a refreshingly pleasant and lighthearted ride. There's often so much chaos and imminent threats impacting the entire world, so it's nice to take a breather from all the madness and urgency and just see Superman doing what he does best: serve as a beacon for hope and inspiration. He may be one of the most powerful individuals on the planet, but that by no means places him above the rest of us. This chapter is an excellent reminder of that.

Without giving too much away, this issue revolves around Kal taking his time to help a kid out with a relatively minor problem. It's not life threatening by any means, but that's exactly the point. This chapter strives to show us Superman once cared about individuals and making a difference on a personal level instead of growing colder and focusing on "the greater good." The issue works because of Taylor's tight script (surprise, surprise). There's an interaction with Lois that's sure to give you a chuckle and it of course has an organic way of drawing us back into the present. It almost feels like this is Tom speaking from the heart about the alternate version of Superman he has to write on a weekly basis. Despite the world having Superman's back after the Apokolips invasion, this new character seems like how Taylor would have reacted if he was in the world.

Bruno Redondo's art helps bring this optimistic world to life. Everything from the child's awe as he first meets Superman to Clark's kind array of expressions definitely sells the moments in Taylor's script. The coloring team also does a fine job. The characters look good and all, but I think the colorists excelled when it came to the environment. The bright green grass, the sky turning to different shades as the sun set... it's all well done and creates a more immersive experience.

The Bad

Assuming Taylor does dive into it, I think this chapter would be more effective post-Green Arrow. That's apparently a big deal for Superman and a new low, so reflecting on the polar opposite take of the character immediately afterwards could have been more powerful. And let's be honest: if anyone should write Green Arrow's death, it's Taylor.

While I don't mind the departure from the main narrative, I'm left wondering about Martian Manhunter. The video game's ending implies the character is alive 5 years from those events, so are we just supposed to assume he did indeed survive the previous ending which seemingly implied he died, or will Taylor follow-up on that? I suppose we'll have to wait and see.

The Verdict

Chapter 30 is a heartwarming experience that'll make you appreciate the classic age of optimism and even miss it a good deal. Sure, it's a total departure from the dramatic overall narrative, but it's a welcome one thanks to Taylor's sharp script and Redondo's solid work with lively emotions. Overall, it's a pleasant little break from the dire and tense events this series usually throws our way and it's definitely one you'll appreciate.

I really liked the last part where the kid mentions how Superman shouldn't become dark and gritty because we want him to be. To me, that was a reference to modern society's take on Superman. A lot of people don't want to see the boy scout version anymore, and that detracts from what the character should stand for. That's what I got out of it, even if it wasn't Taylor's intention.

It was easy to miss Superman when you are just a normal kid in Metropolis. I wonder if the millions that are better off after Superman decided to change his ways would share that vision.

Indeed that Superman was the Man of Yesterday. Obsolete by today standards.

I think this is a real pity that this whole series has down played Superman's inner, moral strength. They have made him into a weak dependent character unable to be a man when the chips are down. True character is judged when bad things happen. Apparently this guy can only be a hero when he is happy and have everything on a platter and to me this makes Superman a character that is not that worthy of admiration. That he can go nuts or evil while other characters in the DCU have suffered worse...yeah DC it's no wonder people find him infinitely boring and simple.

No wonder people like Batman. He is a way stronger character morally because he is a hero in the face of odds and tragedy.

@johnqestion: curious, who has suffered worse in the DCU. His city, his friends, his wife and unborn child where killed by his hands? Who has suffered worse then that?

Every character has a breaking point, Hal, Obsidian, Jason Todd, even Ollie went of the rails when faced with a tragedy, but none have suffered a bigger loss then Kal did.

The new 52 Superman is a good example of a hero that is not worthy of admiration, but Classic Superman was the benchmark for all modern heroes, either you looking to be like him, or be the complete opposite, but you always measured against his status.

Should i be surprised, because honestly i like Injustice (well Injustice 1-29) Superman better than modern continuity The idea was to make Superman look like a bad guy, i dont know, he so doesnt look like a bad guy to me :p he just seem like a really, really cool anti-hero. If anything Batman seems to be the douchebag in the series.

I found the 'The End' at the end very odd and out of place. Almost like if they needed to end the series this is where they could do it with little to no hanging plot threads that weren't explained in the game in some capacity.

I don't understand why you're so concerned about MMs death, even listing it in the bad section of your last review.

It's 99% likely it will be explained....characters coming back from the (seemingly) dead isn't anything new to the genre....

@enzeru: Superman hasnt killed anyone for voicing their opinion. He killed the Joker, then Kalibak (i think he was killed, not too sure), then Martian Manhunter recently as last resort. He hasnt been killing anyone willy nilly, just killing as a last resort, but he just is willing to kill someone if thats what it takes.

I like that particular idea.

@enzeru: No i have not played the game, but my point was , Superman as he is shown currently in Injustice God Amongs Us comics, that version i actually like. I am guessing he actually eventually turns into a villain, at the moment, he seem not to hero and not so villain.

Superman at the moment in comics is perfect for me.

I may be wrong but I remember Tom Taylor saying somewhere that although the comic is based on the video game it isn't necessarily following the same story... its more of an adaptation and he has been left to do his own thing.

That might explain J'onn J'onzz' death.

And while we have a mini Superman debate, let's not forget it is the support and maybe even the influence of Wonder Woman who seems to be at the driving force of this new world order.

If Diana was not the Warrior Princess version and more the ambassador for peace version this may very well be a different set of circumstances.

What made Superman a douche to me was going on Twitter and revealing Batman's identity. He just seems to be misguided, so far. But on down the road, I feel h's going to become the bad guy, but that's the point, I guess; To show how he starts out doing bad things for the "greater good" and the bad things end up consuming him.

Superman is so much better as an inspirational figure instead of an action character.
Adventure of Superman 15, and injustice 30 really show when superman is handled the best.

Man, I've been meaning to catch up with Adventures of Superman but it keeps getting pushed aside!

I liked this issue, but it was too far away from the other injustice issues to get 5 stars, and also was not that exciting and purely setting up an idea. I'd give it a 3.5 personally.
