Injustice: Gods Among Us #29 - Chapter 29

4

Superman and his allies confront Batman in an effort to rescue Hawkgirl.

The Good

Happy Injustice Day, everyone! Not only does every Tuesday (aka Injustice Day) deliver a new chapter of this awesomely engrossing digital series, but today there's also new content available for the video game. The fifth DLC character, Martian Manhunter, is now yours to use, so it's only fitting he also gets the spotlight in the comic, right?

The alien has been teased as Batman's ally for quite some time and now we finally hear why he's siding with Bruce and we even get to witness what he's willing to do to save this world from oppression. Due to page limitations, it's a fairly short scene but it still manages to be effective. The only issue is the emotional experience appears to have no visible impact on Clark, but maybe we'll see this brought up later on. Prior to that, writer Tom Taylor does a fine job entertaining, providing a few smile inducing bits of banter and a priceless reaction from Flash.

Mike S. Miller and the two colorists really impressed me with this issue. Yes, I have some minor gripes with some facial expressions here and there, but overall this was a really good looking issue. I particularly love the first time Batman approaches the team. It's a stellar look at how fantastic the design of his cowl is and I found myself gazing at all of the little alterations. And then there's the heat vision panel which is all kinds of vivid and impressive.

The Bad

The solicit claims this encounter has deadly results, but seeing as Martian Manhunter floats in the background of the Watchtower in the game and he was recently added to the roster, it takes away from the weight of his demise. I have yet to play as him in the game, so I'm not sure if the playable version is from the original world. But if so, how'd he transfer over? Also, I'm mixed on how Taylor decided to open the story. It's certainly an attention getter and looks great, but right when J'onn makes his move, you immediately know how the rest of the issue is going to play out.

Minor gripe: Hal's hair is still black!

The Verdict

Corresponding with the video game, this latest issue puts a strong focus on Martian Manhunter and organically places him into this world's conflict. Throw in some a few terrific panels and chapter 29 is yet another solid addition to the series. It may not be the best issue yet, but it's still damn good and continues to prove why I adore this book. We still have one more issue in this specific storyline, so I'm super anxious for next Tuesday's issue. How will Batman react to these developments? Will Taylor deliver on a big moment for Green Arrow? GET HERE FASTER, TUESDAY.

Now I haven't read much MM besides his N52 appearances and some back issues as well as seeing him in outside media (cartoons, movies, smallville) But him taking over Wonder Womans Body like that seemed totally out of character. I get that they were fighting and he was trying to take them down. But what he did seemed way colder and way more brutal than what you'd expect from someone trying to fight Superman's regime.

@killemall: Yeah, at one point he said he did have an end in sight, but when I asked him at SDCC for a specific time frame, he was unclear and implied it can keep going. Makes sense since the book tops the charts on Amazon and such constantly.

@k4tzm4n: Gregg is there only one issue left in Injustice series? Its only a 30 issue series?? I really hope not coz the series has been so cool (needless to say a LOT cheaper)

@killemall: I always thought MM could only use one power at a time so being intangible wouldn't do much? I dunno. I'd like to think they could have a good fight but MM died too easily.

He can use all of his powers at the same time

@colanicole: Likely because he wanted to show Supes and appeal to humanity , and most importantly its a story focusing soley on Supes and Martian Manhunter really fighting the best he should, could have certainly beaten Superman.

I mean ok he was invisible and taken out the only person who could detect him, i.e. Hal, he didnt even have to be visible, stay invisible and intangible. Its not like he couldnt have shown Clark all he wanted to while being intangible/ invisible. Not only would it have served the purpose, they couldnt have done jack against him.

But the issue demands focus on Superman and how powerful Superman is so meh!. One reason why i disliked this issue. The series however has been just awesome-spectacular

If Supes knew what MM was capable of, why would he even give him a chance. If I was Supes I'd burn him the second I saw him.

In regards to the issue, didnt like it as much, although i outright believe Injustice God Among Us has been the best series and i cant wait for the next chapter to come in.

It seems very limited in content , shame, not much of a huge build up in the end, poor character handling for me.

But hehe the series itself is so good its hard to complain :p

Can someone tell me what happens?

Sure here you go. Spoilers Ahead and VERY DETAIL SPOILERS (just to make sure coz my spoiler block doesnt always work)

Martian Manhunter pretending to be Batman fooled the Justice League for a short while, then a short fight ensures.

He turns invisible and punches Hal.

then proceeds to talk to Superman (instead of just you know mindwiping him and all) and tries to reason with him, tries to show him how a being minority and less powerful would feel like, seems like his reference to the super-power serum they are trying to build.

Wonder Woman intervenes but Martian Manhunter morphs right inside her, strangling her insides and threatens to cut off the air supply to her brain. We can actually see Wonder Woman begin to bleed, it seems had no one intervened Martian would have totally killed Wonder Woman.

In fact Wonder Woman seem to say Martian would have likely killed her at the last page of the issue.

No Caption Provided

Wonder Woman, then having Martian Manhunter inside her, asks Superman to burn him, as Martian are vulnerable to fire (as even referenced here in the story)

No Caption Provided

And upon Wonder Woman's request Superman uses his heat vision to burn Wonder Woman and Martian seemingly seems dead, although i hope he didnt die here and hope we can see a lot more of him. But well a fanboy can dream :p

So yeah thats as detail as i can go in terms of what happened. Sorry if its too much information.

Have a great day mate :)

Let me try to clear things up, but there's a lot of spoilers involved:

Martian Manhunter doesn't die. We see him reappear in Deathstroke's chapter for the story mode when Slade takes on Shazam/Cpt. Marvel and Flash inside of the Watchtower. Could you blame this on lazy editing on NRS' behalf? Sure, but the fact remains that J'onn still exists in the alternate universe. Secondly, the character's ending explicitly states that "Banishing his former friend and teammate to the Phantom Zone [...]" which means this is the alt. universe Martian Manhunter. I know that character battle endings should not be considered canon for the game's storyline, but there's something else that was revealed. J'onn disguised himself as an Atlantean archivist; one whose appearance is identical to that of the archivist main-universe Aquaman spoke with in the story mode. Bearing that in mind, we now know that J'onn was present in Atlantis before, during, and after the arrival of the main-universe heroes.

I dunno man...This whole Superman being an unstoppable force in the injustice universe feels kinda forced in both the comic and video game story.

Lets see, I mean we know how it ends, so I guess I'm just looking for a logical reasoning, or at least a well written explanation as to why anyone other than another Superman couldn't stop Evil Superman.

I don't why it's in the bad section that he might have died. We don't know yet and have to see the story...how does that make it bad?

Isn't that like saying Catwoman's death in JLA was bad because she appears in solicits for trinity war?

I was a little disappointed that we don't really get a solid reaction from Batman in regards to what happened last week. Is this stuff supposed to be cannon? Sorry if that is a dumb question. Also, about Manhunter: At one point wasn't he getting over the fire weakness? Wasn't it supposed to be the mental image of fire that was harming him? I think what happened in this issue is a pretty low showing, I mean, he was inside WW and apparently the heat didn't affect her at all so he should have been fine imo. I understand that his fear etc could have influence him. And wtf, is he supposed to be dead? I guess that answers my cannon question...he should have went inside supes! I wasn't really thinking about it at the time, so when I first saw batman fly it really got me! Haha.

It's non-canon. He only got over his fire weakness in the Pre-52 Universe which is not the universe this comic takes place in.

Yeah, I don't understand how he should be affected by the fire either when he's in Wonder Woman's body either

It appears that Martian Manhunter has died, but

his story ending implies that he is still alive.

Martian Manhunter is a unique case because he appears in the comics and as a DLC. People who just play the game without reading the comic won't believe he died. So I guess we will have to see what happens.

Are we going to ignore the fact that MM, instead of just mind melting the both of them, tried to kill WW slowly, giving Clark a chance to get his attack off, and then did nothing to protect himself during the moment of hesitation before the heat vision was unleashed?

Hey Guys,

I've heard that Green lantern named John Stewart who is remained in Justice league series and The green Lantern Issues is chosen as a new downloadable content of Injustice gods among us as a character like Man-hunter in the game....

This Green lantern is one of a kind of the Lanterns but no a replacement of Hal Jordan, Jon Stewart was an architect from Detroit one of the most popular cities of the US of Michigan, He was selected by the guardians as Hal Jordan's Backup after Guy Gardner's Injury from the disaster which was caused.....

Jon Stewart was created by 2 creators who are known as Denny O Neil and Neal Adams.

His First appearance to the Guardians was Issue #87 of one in the comics of the Green lantern.

In the Trailer of Injustice gods among us is Man-hunter Against Jon Stewart Here's the Link:

I believe Martian Manhunter was killed by Superman's heat vision as he was inside Wonder Woman and Superman used his heat vision to get him out. The pages make it seem as if he was incinerated.

I had always thought the MM in the game was the "normal" or non-insurgency/regime world. Which would mean that this MM really died.

Can't wait to play as Martian Manhunter later today!

Regarding the second spoiler: You know, that's a totally valid point that I completely overlooked. Shame on me and I've updated the review to reflect that.

I don't know why I had the impression WW could have escaped the martian, yet did not so Superman would be forced do what he did.
