Injustice: Gods Among Us #17 - Chapter 17

4

Catwoman attempts to comfort Batman as he mourns the loss of Nightwing.

The Good

Last chapter ran at top speed into the conflict between Superman and Batman, but this chapter switches gears to focus on a character whose managed to avoid the fray thus far: Catwoman. We jump into Selina's head and have the opportunity to see how this dilemma between heroes has impacted the street level. While Superman's declaration has decreased large-scale conflicts, desperation still remain large on the streets. Catwoman's thoughts present a motivation similar to Occupy Wall Street's. According to her, these low-level criminals are actually the victims. They're doing what they need to do to survive and the suits behind corporate greed are the true villains. It's an argument we've seen plenty of times before, but what manages to spice it up a bit is how the public's mentality has changed on the subject. Ever since Clark got away with brutally killing Joker, people think it's a-okay to kill criminals -- even if it's petty theft.

This is able to generate a pretty powerful conversation when she finally bumps into the Man of Steel. He's so focused on stopping missiles and war, but what about helping people who can't afford to put food on their table or a roof over their heads? You can stop violence, but what about poverty? I sincerely hope Selina's message will resonate with Clark and we'll see him attempt to tackle these issues down the road. After all, we have about five years until the events in the video game take place. That's more than enough time for writer Tom Taylor to flesh out Clark attempting to build a "better world."

Her encounter with Batman is reserved until the end. It's a compelling scene, but it's dragged down by one panel that's sure to catch your eye. Don't get me wrong, the visuals by David Yardin and Andrew Elder are mostly impressive. There's some great use of motion as Clark swoops after Catwoman and there's a solid amount of detail and life crafted into every moment. But this one panel... well, really detracts from what could have been a truly gripping moment.

The Bad

As I said above, there's a panel that's sure to standout and not in a good way. Batman's teeth are massive and his eyes feel off. The chapter looks good for the most part, so I have no idea how this one piece is so drastically different from the rest. It's a moment where we should feel for Bruce as he vents, but this image makes it difficult to take seriously.

While it's a nice change of pace to see Catwoman's perspective, I feel like her monologue about fat cats went on for too long. It's certainly a challenge to live up to the last two chapters, but to me, it seems like first few pages were merely going through the motions to reach something more enthralling.

Superman falls to his knees after being near a small sliver of kryptonite. I mean, I know Taylor had to give us a bit of hope Catwoman would elude him, but it would be nice to see him have a little more tolerance to the material. That said, his resolution of the dilemma was fairly awesome.

The Verdict

While #17 doesn't have any moments that'll floor you or make you hold back manly tears (which is what I anticipated in the wake of a terrible loss), it still manages to serve as yet another enjoyable chapter in the series. Witnessing Selina hit Clark with a heavy dose of logic was an unexpected yet most welcome touch, and, despite one questionable panel, the conclusion is a short yet somber reaction to last issue's cliffhanger.

I'm really hoping we'll get a chapter revolving primarily around Damian or Bruce. Placing a strong emphasis on how they're reacting to the tragedy has the potential to be an emotional hurricane, especially if they're forced to simultaneously deal with the greater dispute.

@davidyardin: That's a massive, massive, maaaaaassive improvement, David! Those corrections do a brilliant job hitting us with the raw emotion behind the scene. Thank you for sharing.

@k4tzm4n: I didn't have time to do all the corrections I wanted to do, or to the extent that I wanted to do them, but I am a little happier I got to make some changes at least for the print version, and (issue #6) future digital versions. You can see some of the corrections in the links below:

I wonder if Tom Taylor is giving his indirect opinion (maybe it's just me) on some of the modern things going on now and putting into the Injustice Comics. I couldn't help but compare the idea of gun violence and the laws they are trying to make and pass when I read the quote (above) that you put in your review. I know I shouldn't be mixing these things with comics and all on Comic Vine because this probably isn't place to do it, but I just felt that impression after reading the comic and your statement in your review.

Yeah, Bruces face in that panel through me off, which was a real shame because seeing Alfred in that state on the page before and Selina holding Bruce on the page after, it was all very heart wrenching.

Is it sad to want the comic to steer away from the story in the game because, well, the story in the game kinda sucked (imo)? This series has a real chance to deepen the relationship between (this worlds) Kal-El and Bruce (and maybe Wonder Woman), but knowing that Superman is just going to be a mega dick and end up in the Phantom Zone really takes something away from the issues where Superman second guesses himself, like in this issue when Selina reminds Superman of who the real villains are.

I think the series is fantastic but knowing it's going to end up where it does, I can't help but feel a little deflated.

My lord, Bruce's face! And that must have been one highly concentrated dose of kryptonite.

I've been pretty impressed with how this series has been going. I can't name anything off the top of my head that stood out as exceptionally uninteresting or terrible, besides some weird art choices. It seems like there is much more story to tell as we haven't even gotten to the point of forming the regime yet. We still have to see how Aquaman decides to nearly hand his empire over to Superman. I hope this goes for many many more weeks.

@davidyardin: One of the best things I've seen this week -- not just because I'm glad to hear it can get changed, but because you made a point of coming in to address it. Very cool.

Weakest issue of the series. Quite a few major art flubs on the issue, and it really didn't grab me. However, it's a necessary issue and pushes the book forward emotionally. 3 for me.

I think you're just jealous of the issue because you don't have an oh-so-fine pair of kryptonite earrings.

I actually laughed out loud when I saw the face. That aside, kryptonite is a carcinogenic substance. Lex caught cancer from wearing a kryptonite ring everywhere. Selina wearing it so close to her brain is incredibly dangerous.

I agree but didn't Lex only get cancer from wearing it for years?

He only discovered it after wearing it for years, and it was terminal by then. Still a big risk.

The face stood out to me too but not to the extent of taking the emotion away from those last panels. This was one of the best issues in a series that continues to be great.

@k4tzm4n: cool thanks for the heads up

go figure that DC keeps pumpin out a book based on a game, yet good/potentially great series' are dropped before they ever have a chance to be fleshed out. i get that theres lots of character POV's to tell this story from, but could they not have made this a limited and put Taylor, Yardin, Elder, etc on an ongoing series after?

im NOT complaining about this book, i think its really well written and the art is absolutely killer, but i dont get the length of the series.

oh and BIIIIIIIIG props to @davidyardin for getting an account on CV and talking with readers, thats very cool

how long is this series supposed to go on for?

This was Tom's answer in our first interview:

How long probably depends on our fans. I’m in for the long haul. I hope all of you are too.

Oh man... I just saw that panel finished up close. LOL... Um... sorry guys. Firstly Alejandro Sanchez had nothing to do with this issue. I pencilled this page, Le Beau Underwood inked it, and Andrew Elder coloured it (with very little time might I add). Yes those teeth definitely look too big, I think some of the subtlety in the face was lost in the creative process too. Also the eyes are definitely miscoloured (his eyes are supposed to be shut). I know Andrew was on a really tight deadline, so I'm not sure if it was him, or if he had a flatter that got the eyes wrong. I'm kicking myself because I saw the page, the weekend before it went up, but I was viewing it on my phone (I was at a FCBD event), and trying to zoom and scroll on that, I only noticed some things I didn't like in another panel.

I just emailed Jim, and it looks like I should have time to fix this panel before it goes to the print version, so hopefully the new version is a little more pleasing to the eyes and not so cringe worthy.

Honestly, I want them to go back and fix that panel. Because I feel like the whole issue would feel much more impactful if you didn't have your immersion broken by that laugh-out-loud horse face.

Also, as much as I enjoyed the first issue of The Movement, I think these couple pages of Selina won me over to the "morality of crime" side much better than anything in that whole book. Sounds like all the characters DC's been wrecking, Taylor should be writing. I'd read a Catwoman book penned by him in a heartbeat.
