Injustice: Gods Among Us #12 - Chapter 12 Review

4

Arthur refuses to obey Superman and you'll never guess how the Man of Steel responds.

The Good

What's the one thing you never want to do to a pissed off Superman? If you said, "give him an ultimatum, " then congratulations! That's the mistake Arthur makes in this issue and Clark's response is downright shocking. I know that whole Kraken thing was exciting, but that's quickly glossed over (there's a neat splash page from Mike S. Miller, though), and while that's unfortunate due to personal expectations, the meat of this story revolves around something way more interesting than superheroes fighting a super creature: a clash of egos.

We're treated to what's essentially a pissing contest between two leaders who are rather oblivious to the obvious. Arthur lays out a clear message about the road Clark is taking, but still, Superman disregards that notion and thinks he's saving the world -- not dictating it. Meanwhile, as powerful as Atlantis may be, Arthur makes the mistake of vastly underestimating the immensely powerful Justice Leaguer. The king of Atlantis bluntly points out he will not be bullied, and, in turn, hits the hero with a massive ultimatum. What comes next... well, it's huge. In a series filled with so many powerful moments, this one is sure to make your jaw hit the floor and there's no way I'm going to spoil it for you. It dives into some seriously dark territory and clearly serves as a precursor for the more dangerous actions Clark will be willing to take to stand firmly by his global ceasefire.

I've been mixed on Miller's art, but he does some phenomenal work with a wide range of emotions from Arthur in this one. From anger to overwhelming concern, the look in his eyes drives the scene home and brings it to life.

The Bad

It's a tad disappointing we didn't have an epic battle with the Kraken, but there's limited space in each issue, and the interaction between Aquaman and Clark was a more than adequate replacement.

I know we're dealing with an alternate reality, but I'm concerned over the direction with Wonder Woman. Prior to this issue, I actually found myself able to defend -- or at least understand -- her actions. She legitimately believes Clark can make the world a better place and is pushing him to reach that potential -- but now that desire is taking an ugly turn. She's almost possessive over Superman (well, at least it's now more obvious to us) and her decision to exclude Arthur's remarks dives into a more selfish and evil territory (though I do appreciate her moment of hesitation). I like it when characters tip-toe the moral line, but I have a feeling it'll become more and more difficult to justify her actions as the story progresses. I'm sure Taylor will have her play the "I'm just doing what I think is right!" card, but, as of right now, I find it hard to imagine we'll feel much empathy for her as she continues to pull Superman's strings down the road.

The Verdict

Injustice Day (that's every Tuesday if you haven't been following along) continues to rock. I'm not a fan of phrases like "the most bang for your buck," but the saying applies so darn well in this case. Yes, it's shorter than a standard issue, but that's irrelevant since the quality is well above the majority of titles populating the stands. It continues to be a short and phenomenal read and, seeing as it's just $0.99, there's really no reason to miss out if you're interested in this elseworlds tale.

And since someone always asks: no, you don't need to purchase the game to appreciate the read. Writer Tom Taylor has confirmed this series will continue past the game's release date. Oh, and did I mention a demo for the game is hitting XBLA and PSN today, too (for the US... tomorrow for everyone else)? Because it totally is.

This is the book I'm most excited about every week. It continues to be a pretty good read. Just wish it was alittle longer, also I'm kinda digging that Wonder Woman is really pushing Superman to do these things.</p>

I fear a lot of people will dislike WW in this story. I've already said I feel she is going to be the main "bad guy" here, but I also hope they can justify her actions.

WW is the devil on Supes shoulder lol. I wonder if there going to get together in this series.

man loving this series. I dont even pick up DC comics anymore, but this this my friends is a jewel to read every week. I personally think aquaman would have the upper hand in this situation if he didn't care for his people. the world is 70% water he could do alot of damage, but he's a good guy. BUt anyway this is great and it has got me wanted to buy the full game to see how this story turns out.

Established a chain of seafood restaurants. Makes millions, invests in off-shore oil refineries, arranges countless "accidental" oil spills.

That's what I would have done, but Superman lifts Atlantis out of the ocean and dumps it in the middle of a desert, which is honestly much funnier.

It's not only him, it's him, Wondie, Shazam and GL.

So Superman sent Altantis to the Dune Sea

Taylor calls it her convictions. I get it is AU but WW to behave like this manipulative, cold hearted, and aggressive war monger overnight? In Red Son she was working under a different regime, in Kingdom come it took her years and the world becoming darker, losing her royal station to become angrier and militant. Nothing can justify this extreme depiction. I guess they need an evil fall guy...girl for everyone to hate. I mean poor poor little Superman. He lost everything and now WW is pulling his strings. No it's not his fault. He lost lois and his baby and his city...your heart has to bleed. But Diana is the she devil taking away his restraint...ie corrupting him. Wow is this WW or Maxima we talking here? Taylor tries to show the other heroes true to their core but he was writing Diana off key from day one.

I can't believe i'm saying this but if kinda like how the whole WW story is coming out. Coming from a WW fan, it's nice to see that she will play a big role in this story. Come on Supes has gone evil before and so did Bats(Owlman). So nice to see WW at least not being overshadowed by the other two trinity members.

I still think that this prequel comic is the story of the a different universe where Joker does bomb Metropolis. While in the game the stroy is like the Justice Lords of the dcau. Where Batman somehow seeks help from the JL of another universe. Cause the comic and the game story mode(judging from the "Line" trailer. Seem to tell different stories.

But they are a ALL evil in that verse. This is isolating her of them all to be willing to stoop really low. Using Superman's grief, conniving, lying, ...since when Diana lies? Does she still carry her lasso of you know ...truth? Superman is a kinda nut case so he's off the rails for lois ; stuff he he always does but he still you can see has care for Arthur. Diana is everything in this story that she is not... cold, calculating, arrogant and lacks compassion. She won't be overshadowed but she'll be despised for it. Seems the writers are setting her up as the villain. The dark mistress after the sweet wife dies. Who better to hate than the man hating amazon who thinks man's world can't rule over themselves, right? I am actually shocked she even thinks anything much of Superman as it feels she has little respect for him/others by her actions. she is making him do her 'dirty' work.

I am still confused at the fact that Superman cracked down on Aquaman for cracking down on criminals, when that's what Superman was doing... Aquaman is just as wrong/right as Superman WHY ARE THEY ARGUING, hope this isn't in the game.

This is such a great read. Getting this every Tuesday (along with the Legends of the Dark Knight digital) holds me over nicely until the next day when it's new comic day.

@laserlambert: Aquaman didn't crack down on criminals, whalers are not criminals.

Posted by Kiddevil

@snascimento: Actually whaling is illegal and something that could destroy the species.

Posted by SNascimento

@kiddevil: Not is Japan it's not. That were honest workers doing their honest job.

I refuse to read this issue on the grounds of there's a giant ass octopus in it. Other than every issue is solid and a must read

Edited by LaserLambert

@snascimento: law of the sea is not governed by a single nation, also there is nothing 'honest' about abusing a loophole wherein you refer to your vessel as a 'research' vessel, when you are going out to overkill a species that we need nothing from. Superman cracked down on dictators or whatever earlier, by the dictator's own corrupt law they are commiting no crime right?

Superhypocrite and Aquahypocrite I REALLY HOPE THIS IS FILLER FOR THIS SERIES AND NOT IN THE GAME.

Looking forward to the game and to this book.
