Infinity: Against the Tide #1 - Against the Tide Review

5

As the heroes on Earth gather to face a new threat, we get to see what's happening on the other side of the universe.

The Good

This is what I want in an "event" tie in. INFINITY started last week with a good start. We're seeing the seeds sprout from Jonathan Hickman's AVENGERS series. This "Infinite" comic shows us another part of the Marvel Universe. We see the Builders' razing Hy'lt Minor.

What's most fascinating about this story is we're seeing a Skrull planet attacked. With what happened during Secret Invasion, it would be difficult to ever sympathize with these aliens. But the way Jason LaTour lays out the story, you can't help but feel for them. The story is narrated by the Silver Surfer and it adds a great perspective on the events. It's sometimes hard to remember what he must be going through and how detached he must be since he received the power cosmic.

Agustin Alessio provides some gorgeous artwork. It's almost eerie seeing the Skrulls portrayed with this sort of detail but it fits the story perfectly. The use of the Infinite format allows for some subtle tricks with the art that makes the reading experience more enjoyable. Seeing the Silver Surfer in action here was incredible.

The Bad

The story doesn't appear to be essential to the overall story. At least not yet. It does give a great taste of how vast the Marvel Universe is and that this "event" is having an effect on far off areas as well.

The Verdict

Marvel's Infinite Comics are a blast to read. The little enhancements adds some life to the comics and makes the reading experience a little more interactive. This story ties into INFINITY but doesn't appear to be crucial. For $1.99, it's an impressive story with gorgeous art that should definitely be checked out. Apparently those that redeemed the digital code for INFINITY #1, you may have noticed this comic included at no extra charge. Jason LaTour makes you feel sympathy for the Skrulls. This is something I thought I'd never see. You just might not look at them the same after this.

If you're interested in what impact Infinity arc will have on the rest of the Marvel Universe, this is a great example. You're taken away from the main portion of the action and are treated to an interesting story. Plus, you'll want to see how much butt the Silver Surfer kicks. If you've never read an Infinite Comic, you need to check this out.

I was pretty surprised when this was included in my digital copy of Infinity #1. This was my first experience with this Infinite digital format and I was impressed. Hopefully Marvel will do more bonuses like this in the future.

Marvel did this a couple times with their AVX Infinite tie-ins. You get it free if you buy the main book digitally but have to pay $1.99 for it if you don't pick up the digital main book. However, the digital book may be more expensive than the print book because of the Infinite bonus. The digital book was $4.99. did the print cost that or $3.99

Loved the story as well. It's always great to see the Silver Surfer like that. Never been a big fan of him on earth because he is to powerful to be used frequently. Awesome to see how easily he tore through the Alephs.

This was a great tie-in. Can't adequately describe how excited I was for Surfer action.

I really loved this tie in. Was surprised when it came with my digital copy.

@cap10nate: The print was also $4.99 and comes with the digital code to get both.

Now this is that classic Silver Surfer feel that I wanted to get back to. He's so interesting to read when he's tormented by the futility of his god like existence and yet still manages to find a purpose to keep him going. More Silver Surfer stories like this please.

The implied potential rape of a female Skrull was very unnecessary.

I loved this. Read it a few times already.

Exactly! This shows how bad ass Surfer truly is to take in a destroy Aleph Class robots by himself when The Avengers had problems with one. He's truly in a league if his own.

I bought the book in print. If I redeem my digital code inside the book does this come with?

Posted by JuliusTakalua

So... Let me get this straight.

the infinity digital book was like 108 pages long. DOes it include ALL the major tie ins? or just this for free at the end?

DO I have to buy this separately the next book?
BTW awesome book. No idea what is going on in this arc but this tie in was the best part of the whole event

Hold on a sec. So if you redeemed the digital code in Infinity #1, you got this for free?

Ah, crap!

Read the Super Skrull Annihliation mini, it'll make you sympathize with Super Skrull.

THANK YOU. SO MUCH. FOR THIS COMMENT. I was about to launch into a tirade of not being able to get this in print, but if it's included with Infinity #1 (I haven't had a chance to explore the AR of most Marvel stuff lately) then I actually can't really complain. It's mean to be a supplement to the main story, so it's included with it. It's like a co-feature. If THIS kind of stuff was in the other Marvel comics that cost an extra dollar without adding any real new content, I wouldn't have a problem with them charging that extra dollar.
