Infinity #1 - Infinity

4

Buckle your seat belts, the next Marvel Comics Event is here and it's definitely one you will not want to miss.

The Good

Most people seem to have similar feelings towards events in comics. Regardless, they do sell and people do read them. Marvel knows this and the very first page makes it clear this is "A Marvel Comics Event." With this issue featuring Jonathan Hickman, Jim Cheung and Thanos on the cover, I dare you to resist checking it out.

The great thing is, this isn't your typical event. If you've been checking out Hickman's AVENGERS and NEW AVENGERS, this almost feels like a natural progression rather than a sudden event that brings all the characters together. This is something that Marvel has been leading up to. That's one thing that makes this feel different from past events. There's also the fact that this is a more galactic story and even though AvX involved the Phoenix Force, it's almost as if you can't compare these two events.

This massive comic begins with the INFINITY Free Comic Book Day issue for those that might have missed it. Also drawn by Jim Cheung, it seamlessly flows right into the main story. Speaking of Cheung's art, it has to be mentioned that he knows how to draw fearsome alien races. Often in comics, alien species appear too artificial and sometimes comical. The look can also be attributed to Justin Ponsor's colors and Mark Morales' inks in the opening section.

If you haven't been keeping up with the AVENGERS titles, there is a convenient scorecard informing you who the main players are and what affiliation they have. This is helpful with the different alien races and the fact that there are a lot of characters that will be involved here.

Other events try to have a big feel to them. INFINITY simply is big. You can feel an epic story in the making. We just need to sit back and watch it unfold.

The Bad

New readers can make their way through this issue but there will be a slight sense of confusion if you haven't been reading Hickman's AVENGERS titles. Parts of the issue are divided into separate sections and you almost feel like you're being thrown around from scene to scene, trying to figure out what is going on. You barely get a chance to see what's going on but you will have a sense of awe at the same time which does lessen the confusion. But some readers might feel as if they walked into a movie theater, having missed the first couple minutes. It almost feels like too much is being set up here.

We also see the return of the Builders, first introduced in Hickman's AVENGERS. They weren't characters I was too crazy about as we've seen so many different characters and species that were determined to evolve other species.

It may be unfair to this 'event' but knowing there's already another brewing after this makes it a tiny bit hard to swallow.

The Verdict

Whether you love events or are trying to avoid them, there's no denying the grand scope Marvel, Jonathan Hickman and Jim Cheung have established with the very first issue of INFINITY. Hickman has been building this story in recent issues of AVENGERS and NEW AVENGERS and this is where it all bubbles to the surface. Reading those are not crucial but will help a good deal.

For those in fear of "another event," the good news is this makes it feel worthy. There is a lot going on. Perhaps too much but you will feel satisfied after laying out your dollars for this comic. There's some huge things coming to the heroes in the Marvel Universe. With a battle on different fronts, it's going to be fun seeing the Avengers fight one threat while a certain other individual takes advantage of their absence. If we have to have events, this is how I want it to play out. There is a grand feel to the story and you'll feel yourself staring at each page in awe over what transpires. Too often comic book events are hyped up and fizzle out but INFINITY delivers in the first issue. You'll definitely want to come on board for INFINITY. It's going to be a crazy and thrilling ride.

It felt very different from previous event. Very well paced. This is gonna be so much better than Fear itself, AvX and Age of Ultron, this is is gonna be Annihilation with the Avengers and the Inhumans !

Isn't it true that the book has like 7+ "white" pages with no images?

Hickman in a recent interview said that when they use "white" pages in his books they drop advertisement space.

Is this another story about Thanos gaining ultimate power and then ultimately losing it again?

Could someone explain what the hell is going on?

in terms of Infinity? I could give it a try.

==============================

Premise

==============================

Hickman run of Avengers and New Avengers started with 2 different stories, which were somehow merged with each other.

In Avengers a guy called Ex Nihilo appeared in Mars, who wanting to create a better earth sent origin bombs on Earth which was mean to evolve the planet wherever it hit. Avengers manage to defeat him, but he reveals that he was created by this godlike beings called The Builders, whose purpose is to shape planets as they feel right, evolve planets and destroy them as they see if. They have also somehow marked Earth for destruction, why is unknown.

So what Avengers have dont so far is Collected the biggest group of heroes they can find, an all powerful team and decided to confront the Builders before they arrive on Earth.

The opening with the giant ship, guy with horns, flying robots that go destroying planets, that was meant to be the builders done to show that they are extremely powerful as earlier mentioned.

Thats one side of it.

There is a second side of the stories going on that leads to Infinity. New Avengers are dealing with a potentially a multiverse destroying problem called the incursion. Apparently a godlike being was created called Rabum Alal, the great destroyer, we havent seen him yet, whose creation contracted the multiversal time-lines, now universes are moving towards each other and crashing with each other, with the point of contact being Earth. Destroying Earth somehow mysteriously stop this event. This part however at the moment has been left unexplored but knowing how Hickman writer the comics this will eventually pay some big role.

The third side of it, which directly leads to Infinity was Thanos, who apparently now, off panel, has collected an army for himself, he also have 5 generals and are now called the Black Order. Thanos is looking for something, we dont know what it is, but what we do know is its on Earth.

So its the timing thing:

1. Avengers , the biggest heavy hitters, are leaving Earth to face a galactic threat builders.

2. Thanos has decided to come to Earth in search for something, with his army, and we dont know what it is, all we know is its Thanos so whatever he is seeking is going to have huge consequences.

3. Time and again, another universe tries to crash with ours and the only way to prevent it is to destroy that universes earth , killing billions of people in the process.

So thats the whole thing about Infinity.

===============================

Characters

===============================

So major players in the story:

1. Avengers, which you already know.

2. Thanos

3. Builders: the giant flying robots with massive sized ships

4. Black Order , the people that were talking to Thanos

5. Earth Heroes (Inhumans , New Avengers and a new group of heroes called Mighty Avengers)

================================

Not sure if this helps.

Because Infinity isnt a new story that just arrived in the scene, but rather a continuation of what has been happening in Avengers and New Avengers (so 16 issues from Avengers and 8 from New Avengers), finally playing itself out in the grandest of stage i understand how it can be difficult to follow.

I do not read marvel that much and I never read Hickman's Avengers.

I'm on my 3rd page and it kinda sucks. I have no idea what's going on. No feeling of weight. No idea who the characters are (I mean their characteristics and stuff).

Seems there is no plot to be interested in. It's like AoU but at least in AoU you know it's crap so there's no need for understanding anything.

Could someone explain what the hell is going on?

I cant only get the issue tomorrow, its nice to have the review up early.

Does Tony G get early editions for comics? Or is USA just significantly faster than Australia?

Occasionally Marvel and DC will send out early copies. Honestly, it's usually an indication of their faith in the book.

I really enjoyed it , It felt like alot of pieces where coming together from Avengers and New Avengers, so it does not feel like a company event, more of just a cross over and connection between those 2 books. So if you are not reading those, I have no idea how you would get into this, as the review states, but if you have been reading, I think it will be a big pay off !

I was going to skip this. I had had enough of their events, and finally made the decision to just not get it. But then my darn comic shop gave it out for free, and I'll be darned if it wasn't bad. Of course, that's what I thought about the first few issues of Age of Ultron.

I liked this issue and the fcbd part gave me enough to know whats going on. Along with cast list. So I think they did good enough job to help a new reader. So I disagree with your bad section . Other than that I agree with you. This issue alone had a lot of great moments and impactful moments for a first issue . I love the event line !!!! I hope inhumans could get ongoing !

Wow... now THIS is an event. It's actually epic. Finally, for once, that word can be used to describe a Marvel event. Cosmic, multi-versal... It's the Hickman writing I've been looking for. All the pieces finally falling into place, all the little bits and parts that Hickman teased and showed are finally coming into play.

I can't wait for the next issue, and I'm SO happy this event finally fits the word.

The fact that Hickman shows self-awareness regarding event fatigue is something many of you are missing.

Iron Man slyly addresses it with one line that entirely sold me on the potential of this event.

"Just win. I'm getting tired of end-of-the-world scenarios."

It does something no event has done in a LONG time, and that's establish a high-stakes scenario that, familar as it is, feels like anything could happen. Even though good will win, it genuinely feels like a believable and risky situation.

An absolutely brilliant start. The warm-up issues are usually setting the pace, but Hickman has jumped right in. It has been PERFECTLY weighted. Because Avengers is more action/event-based and N.A. is more dialogue/plot-based, everyone reading both is now entirely used to both Hickman styles. So, amalgamating them in an event mini is a seamless transition. Nobody's "bored" by what would usually be boring because Hickman has given us time to appreciate it in N.A.

It's actually such a genius way to build an event.

Marvel blows at doing events,I'll pass.

I keep giving them a chance and keep getting disappointed.

I bought into Fear Itself after a friend hyped it up and thought it was pretty lame.

I finally caught up and read AvX and that was lame.

Oddly enough, against the popular opinion, I actually enjoyed Age of Ultron.

But those 3 in a row tell me that Marvel 'events' aren't really all that great. I'll save my money for Daredevil and Deadpool instead.

REALLY NEED HELP - my birthday is coming up, do I ask for the hardback of Avengers: Last White Event, and buy all the prelude to infinity comics?
I bought, and really enjoyed, the first three of Hickman's Avengers (with Mars and stuff).

Oh, one more thing: What's with the Deadpool variant cover?

Is it just me or does it look awkward? What's supposed to be funny about this mask? Maybe I'm missing something here (besides humor of course).

Sounds cool, i am guessing its Hickman's thing. I have read his FF run, and his Avengers run so far, cant remember what else he wrote to be honest, but while his stories might not be exceptional, the dude is pretty good with presentation.

I should start following IGN reviews from now on :)

The Manhattan Projects and East of West are pretty awesome! I'd say everything he does or did (Nightly News, Red Wing, Secret, Transhuman) besides his Marvel stuff is quite good or at least interesting.

If Hickman can bring back the epic feel to this like he did with Fantastic Four #604, I'll be happy. Well that, Black Bolt and the Inhumans taking center stage, and Richard Rider making a big comeback.

I hope it's good, but I was disappointed with Age of Ultron and that was the first event I'd picked up since Civil War. It wasn't bad, just, not good. So I'll sideline this one and if it's good I'll get the trade volume.

Overall I hope it is good and does well though.

I'm surprisingly looking forward to this. Everything I've read says it will tie everything together from Avengers and New Avengers. Having said that, I still don't know why the whole event can't just take place within the pages of Avengers and New Avengers. Why have the separate Infinity titles as well? Yes, I know, it's about selling more books to make more money. It's just gotten to the point of being tired and irritating. I'm on board for this, but if it fizzles and flops, I will likely drop all team books that breed these events. Be careful publishers, making more money now may cost you even more later. But then again, what the heck do I know?
