Indestructible Hulk #2 - Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. Part 2 Review

4

Bruce Banner wants to work for SHIELD. This is hard for people to accept. Guess what happens when Iron Man comes to check on him.

The Good

This is another example of what the Marvel NOW! titles should be about. The idea was to deliver new jumping on points for readers and that's exactly what Mark Waid is doing. Readers should know who Hulk/Bruce Banner is. All you need to know about what he's done before is smashing things. Bruce is now determined to use his intellect and contribute to the world in a positive manner. His solution, we saw last issue, was to agree to be SHIELD's 'cannon' when needed provided they gave him the tools and space to invent things.

Despite having INDESTRUCTIBLE in the title, there is a lot of focus on Banner. There might be even more of a focus on Banner than the Hulk. When Tony Stark comes to check on what's going on, we get that great battle of wits between two extreme geniuses. These moments show us the level of dialogue Waid is capable of. A Hulk comic doesn't have to be just about smashing. Seeing these two interact is like watching someone play with matches in a dynamite factory. The suspense will keep you on edge as well as entertain you. Hopefully we'll be seeing a lot of Stark in this series from time to time.

Leinil Francis Yu's artwork combined with Sunny Gho's colors transports us to another world. This may take place in the Marvel Universe but it has such a different feel to it. You don't feel like your reading just another regular comic book. The colors used are almost calming which offers a nice contradiction to the potential destruction that could erupt at any moment.

The Bad

It's great to see the continue set up for this series and while I'm loving the character development, it feels like it takes a bit for us to actually see Hulk in action. It may still be extremely early but using INDESTRUCTIBLE to describe this title seems a little off. It's great to see Banner develop as the brilliant genius he should be but you get a sense that there might be something more going on when we finally do see Hulk appear.

There were a couple times the inking felt a little thick, especially on a couple of the action panels.

The Verdict

We're seeing a new direction for Hulk. This is a common theme in some of the new Marvel NOW! series. Mark Waid is giving us a different look at the relationship between Banner and Hulk. In his new setting, we get to see Banner step forward into the spotlight while Hulk is still looming and waiting to claim it for himself. The appearance by Tony Stark is great and builds the rivalry and banter between the two smart guys. Leinil Francis Yu's art and Sunny Gho's colors give this title a distinct feel. We've barely scratched the surface in what's coming up. We get a bit of a cliffhanger at the end so we'll have to wait and see what's next for Hulk.

HULK SMASHH!!! When are we gonna see more of that in this series, am I right? I'm loving that there touching on Bruce's intellect and relationship associated with his other half, The Hulk, but hopefully we start to see more Hulk feats later on in the issues.

What issue is he tearing thru on that variant cover?

The INDESTRUCTIBLE in the title is about how Banner can't cure the Hulk.

Marvel were the ones to put INDESTRUCTIBLE in the title. In fact, Waid wasn't too please with the idea.

Yea i liked the issue but, at the risk of sounding like an idiot,i had no idea what was going on between tony and bruce. What was that fight all about;what was the purpose of bruce taking tony to the mt.?

I get the end result, tony respects bruce, but why didn't tony get mad at bruce for taking him to,what seemed like a trap?It seemed like bruce was proving tony's point and he just ignored it.

Never was a hulk reader, but this series has changed my mind. I love Mark Waid's DD and Rocketeer, so picking this up was a no brainer. Absolutely love it.

I haven't read this issue yet. But in issue #1 Banner seemed a little arrogant. Is this part of his character in the comics? Or did I just read it wrong or something?

he isn't arrogant, he just has a change of attitude and wants to leave a mark with his intelligence instead of destruction.

@TheAcidSkull: I get that. And I didn't mean that he was a jerk. Just sort of seemed sort of, "I'm smart and I know it, and I'm not afraid to show it." And that is probably because he wants to remind people that he is smart and not just a guy who turns into the Hulk, but one of the smartest men on Earth. But there were times he seemed like when he says you either agree to what I want or I take my plans somewhere else like Latveria, stuff like that. I am also not saying its a bad character defining idea. He is one of the smartest men in Marvel but all he is known for is the Hulk. Thats got to be frustrating on him. I was just wondering if that sort of stuff continues. Rereading it for examples I saw that he wasn't as arrogant as I remembered, but still a little. Can't wait for issue 2. Just read FF 2 and All New X-Men 4.

Personally I don't see how the use of Indestructible in the title is a negative point in the comic. And I relish character development over action any day. Makes the action all the more sweet when you know the character behind it. Still great review!

Am i the only one who thinks that Indestructible Hulk sounds like a badass title?

Haven't liked Hulk this much since WWH. This issue didn't quite hit the same peak as issue one but I do love the idea of Banner finally being Tony Stark's intellectual rival.

"I've come to believe The Hulk is indestructible, Tony."-Bruce Banner

@comicace3: you've got to be the only one. there aren't enough people on earth for anyone else to feel that away...

This title to me has to be one of my favorite Marvel Now titles out. I fine with the HULK not smashing as much, its bout time banner gets some rub. He is one of the smartest brain in the marvel u, im glad to see they letting banner live his life and do what he loves besides stressing over the HUlk all his time. The title is Whatever I'm fine with Indestructible Hulk as long as it stays good they can call it whatever

Let's face it people, no one likes change..... so changeing the name "Incredible" into the new name "Indestructible" made me do the "Tarter Sauce " Cat face. However, now I love it and It feels like the much "Superior" choice. Also, with this new series, I had to read the comic twice to get the points they were aiming at. This may be because while many comics exaggerate character expressions, to cue the ready easier into the stories elements, I feel Leinil Francis Yu's artwork in this issue used a more subtle approach. Overall I am very excited about this series but at thye same time sad in the pants as I watch other "Marvel-Now" comics get 2 or more issues a month. This makes me want to "Hulk Smash".

this new indestructible hulk incarnation will beat the shit out of hulk honestly, cos is faster, as fast as doomsday imo. haha

The 'Indestructible' refers to 'The Hulk' being something Bruce Banner can't get rid of, he basically explained the title in this issue.

Bruce has years of pent up aggression at Tony Stark always looking down on him for not accomplishing anything aside from smashing. Bruce took him out to the mountains so he could vent his frustration without innocents nearby, and he happened to have a spot to test his invention right there. Two birds, one stone. And I guess Tony didn't get mad because A: Bruce actually saved Tony from the machine WHILE being Hulk, and B: he got to see how Banner can set up the situations to manage it so that he becomes The Hulk on his terms.

@Sinfulplayerx: i like this incarnation of hulk. he is very very fast, he knows hand to hand combat more than before. and he is stronger i think!!

@That60sGuy:It looks to be the cover to The Incredible Hulk #2, I think that's what your asking.

Yup that's the one. Thanks.
