I, Vampire #13 - Debaser

5

The series that constantly catches you off guard continues with the complete change of the status quo.

The Good

I absolutely love this series. Joshua Hale Fialkov continues to craft a wonderful tale of love, deception and, of course, vampires. Month after month, Fialkov manages to shake things up. You never really know what's going to happen. The big twist has been seeing heroes and villains swapping roles. The fact that Fialkov has the ability and luxury to change things up whenever he wants makes I, VAMPIRE a fascinating read. We may want to be able to root for the good guys and assume they'll always win but not really knowing if we'll always have a happy ending is a truly rare thing in comics. I can't help but wonder how long Fialkov has had these events mapped out and how far in advance he has the story planned.

To make a great story more hauntingly beautiful is Andrea Sorrentino's art. He manages to make each page look gorgeous and frightening at the same time. This is a great corner of the DC Universe. It's not one that all other DC characters could easily survive in. We get such a mix between creepy scenes, calm situations and heavy duty action. The art and story is such a great combination.

Each month when I read the latest issue, I'm reminded that these characters existed before. I know very little about Andrew Bennett, Mary, Queen of Blood and Deborah Dancer (seen here for the first time in the New 52). They, and the others, are such great characters. Fialkov keeps making them so fun to read.

The Bad

Nothing. This series continues to be a blast on so many different levels.

The Verdict

Have you been reading I, VAMPIRE? Josh Fialkov and Andrea Sorrentino knock it out of the park month after month. You owe it to yourself to find out what's been going on. You never know what's going to happen. Characters that were heroes become villains and vice versa. This is a comic that is about the story. It's not your typical watered down comic. What pushes this series over the top is the amazing art. The combination of art and story telling is the perfect marriage in making this a unique comic. It has a separate feel to it from the rest of the New 52 titles and reading it is like taking a dark journey that will take you places you never knew existed. Be sure to wear a belt while reading because it might scare the pants off of you.

I remember reading the 1st one some time ago. There was a fair bit of time between reading 1 and 2. However between reading 2-12, within 2 days. I've fallen back in love with the vampire franchise after years of CRAP!

The story is great and equally the art. Great team. Great story. Great characters. Great dialogue. I agree there is no fault in this. Maybe the only one I can think of is there is only 24 pages.

I read the first issue and for whatever reason it didn't do it for me so i opted out for different new 52 titles, then came along the JLD crossover and I decided to give it another chance (since I have control issues when it comes to crossovers) besides Batman being involved (because the rules of the DCnU have to feature him in everything) wound up really enjoying it and have been happy ever since.

Not to mention Fialkov has been the best writer to portray Midnighter and Apollo as a couple even if it was only for an issue.

@G-Man: couldnt agree more Tony. You guys made me take the chance around issue 3 I have been buying it digitally ever since. This book has been amazing. The art is awesome and it just makes you want more and more. Definitely one of the best New 52s. This issue made me actually feel a little sorry for Mary surprisingly.

I decided since this is Joshua Fialkov's one ongoing title at any company I was going to show my support. I picked up the zero issue last month and this today. Plan on reading it, JLD and Bravest Warriors tonight at work.
