He-Man and the Masters of the Universe #1 - The Seeker Review

4

How do you make He-Man and the Masters of the Universe really cool? Get James Robinson to twist the idea slightly and take the characters in a new direction.

The Good

He-Man's taking some ribbing over the years. If you go back and watch the original episodes, there are times you'll have no idea what's supposed to be happening. I imagine there is still a strong following as action figures and collectibles are still being produced. He-Man was always a big muscular warrior, in very little clothing who fought a guy with a skull face and seemed a little wacky. We've seen attempts at He-Man comics in the past but it was the inclusion of James Robinson and Philip Tan that immediately grabbed my attention.

While not a die hard fan of the show, I don't recall the bad guys ever really winning. It turns out, that's the case here. Prince Adam is no longer who he once was. He is simply Adam, a woodsman, taking care of his ailing father. He has vague dreams of being a warrior fighting evil along a team of trusted allies. But to him, those are only dreams. Something has happened in Eternia and somehow Prince Adam has forgotten he was ever He-Man. That's the crux of the story.

Even though this is only the first issue, there is the feeling that this could be a He-Man story unlike any we've seen. How could Skeletor have triumphed over He-Man? What has caused Adam to forget his past? Where are the other Masters of the Universe. We all love a good mystery and that is what we get here.

Philip Tan's art adds a different layer to the characters than what we might expect. They don't have the cartoony look they did in the original series. He even manages to make Beastman look savage and deadly. There's a lot to look forward to when other familiar faces turn up in this series.

The Bad

There's always a matter of different interpretations. Prince Adam was always a little soft and weak when he wasn't He-Man. Despite this, he pretty much had the same build as He-Man. That isn't the case here. Adam is pretty scrawny compared to what we're used to.

I'm deeply intrigued by the story but He-Man pretty much isn't here. We do need some build up and this is just the first issue. But if this is just a six-issue series, He-Man fans might be left wondering how this series will compare to past incarnations. Whether or not readers will be hooked lies on how much of a fan they are of the characters. For those unfamiliar with He-Man, the fact that Adam can't recall his past might not be enough of a reason to continue reading. All we have is a bit of a promise that Robinson and Tan will deliver something spectacular.

The Verdict

Something has happened and He-Man is no longer the champion of Eternia. With Prince Adam having no memory of his previous life and no signs of the other Masters of the Universe, it appears that Skeletor may have finally won the battle. He-Man may not put in an appearance but there is some action and familiar faces here. You get the feeling that this could turn out to be really cool. Casual readers or those unfamiliar with the characters might not be completely willing to accept it. It's basically James Robinson's idea and Philip Tan's art that is enough of a hook to make you want to read this.

Meanwhile, Superman haters are completely oblivious to He-Man's casual, furry underwear.

and I am glad these comments ^ were mature and necessary

Anyways, I am suspecting Skeletor brainwashed Adam to some degree, a little disappointing that Beastman got jacked by a branch.......

and the writing was a little...odd "I have my axe and all the wood in it"  dafuq does that mean??

@cattlebattle: I love the direction it is going in. I really want to know how they know he is He-man. With Skeletor in power I get flash backs of the '87 live action movie. Don't get me wrong it wasn't the greatest of movies the Idea was solid. Skeletor has controland it really tests He-man's ability as a hero.

wasn't the greatest of movies??????? I loved that movie....anything with Dolph Lundgren and the plot revolving around a stylized electric keyboard is solid gold in my mind

@danhimself: Ok I loved that movie too Trodorne and I wore out the VHS growing up, we know that movie line for line. The reason why I said it wasn't the greatest of movies was the budgeting problems. thats why it could have been better. But Aside from that the comic was great.

I picked thgis up because I loved the 2002 animated series on Toonami. That was so cool. Anyways I think James Robinson is killin it right now and this continues that streak. Interesting first issue, like the new take. This is one going to my pull list.

One thing, how come the writer has to erase He-Man's sister She-Ra from this storyline? That's the only thing that would bug fans of both of their television series.

i hope adora is in it to at some point.

I think thats cool and slow gets his powers, knock the crap out of skeletor. Hopefully, they don't make She-ra into another skeletor body like, but with some serious tones, (I'm sorry, but no woman warrior would like Megan Fox, but look instead like Jessica Biel, opps WW BS, she fighting men who weight more and are stronger). I think that the writers (the tv show) of the series could never go off the deep end, showing blood. I love He-man was sooo cool.

No 'Hey Yeah Yeah Yeah' jokes yet?

While I like that James Robinson is taking this seriously, I'm also torn because I don't want things shaken up too much as the 80's He-Man cartoon was one of the most important aspects of my childhood and NOTHING will ever take away how awesome Alan Oppenheimer as Skeletor.

I really want to pick this series up.

I loved the movie, I will still watch it on occasion....I don't care what anyone says either....Frank Langella gives one of the best villain performances in comic/fantasy based movie ever as Skeletor

I loved it! Great start to the series, and I like the change in Prince Adam. It makes sense that he only gains He-Man's build when he transforms into him.

I guess its about time i get in on this.

The 2002 series was awesome it had better character depth and story. which made it superior to the orginal show EXCEPT that damn power sword design.

They did show blood in the 2002 comic series by MV creations/ Image. so check that out if you want to see a bit more mature He-man Series.

1. Frank Langella CARRIED that movie.

2. "Come beatles you wanna play? then lets play.."

"Come on you motha."

"NO DON'T KILL HIM I WANT HIM ALIVE!"

*gets shot at, hide behind statue. looks at skeletor*

"You can not hide from me mwahahaha."

*Zaps statue, he-man knocks it over.*

"Karg prepare for escape"

"Surely you won't leave skeletor alone"

"Here.. moron lets go."

"Signal the retreat"

*he-man swings to the throne and grabs the sword*

"NO!"

Tries to zap He-man but he pulls out the sword and holds it over head.

"I HAVE THE POWER!"

"NO! I will not allow you to stand between me and my destiny"

"But I will, it has always be between us."

"Ohh eghh I will smash out of existence, to drive your accursed face from my memory FOREVER!"

"NEVER!"

"YES! let this be our final Battle!"

And they clash. MOVING ON!

You know, I have seen this movie a thousand times since I was around 6 years old and have still never understood half the dialogue, including Lubic calling them beetles, Some of what Kevin says when he is wearing the collar, and about half of the stuff Lundgren says

All I have to say is this...

He-Man by Stjepan Sejic
Posted by Jaymundo

I picked up the first issue and didn't really know what to expect going into it but I quite enjoyed it. I did feel the encounter with Beastman was a little weak and rushed but I will be grabbing the others to see where this goes.

Man, I'm a huge He-man fan I used to watch he-man animated series from 2001. I loved the show. But my comic book store didnt have this. :(

I thought it was actually pretty decent but I agree that some of the dialog was stilted.

Love what they've done with it. Coincides with the whole aspect of rebooting at DC.

Interesting, didn't even know DC had the license for this

Dark horse is doing the mini comics. And they used to do the series back during the 80's which was pretty good.

I loved it! Can't wait to read the rest!

I want to look into this series.
