Hawkeye #10 Review

After last issue's tragic ending, we find out more of the backstory to get an idea what lead up to those events. Another great story plus Francesco Francavilla's groovy art!

The Good

Matt Fraction continues his reign with another great issue of HAWKEYE. Upon hearing that David Aja is not doing the art on this issue you might have a feeling of "Aw man!" but because you're likely familiar with Francesco Francavilla's art, you know you're still in for a treat.

It's easy to label HAWKEYE as a quirky and fun book but there is more to it than the subtle and hilarious humor Fraction throws into each issue. As Kate Bishop describes Clint Barton, he's like a "human car-crash." Not all superheroes should be perfect. Fraction has always shown us that Clint has flaws and he can get hurt. We very rarely get a look at characters in this way. Despite everything becoming a downer, he continues to throw his life on the line when it comes to saving others and doing the right thing.

We get a slight shift in focus here with the story mainly dealing with Kate and the mysterious character that appeared last issue. The way the story is told through Francavilla's layouts is amazing. You get a sick feeling in the pit of your stomach because you just know things can't end well.

The Bad

This story does take place before the ending of last issue. While we find out more about the killer, it wasn't clear during the story. You assume this takes place after last issue's ending. Also, last issue we saw Kate arrive and leave. She does so again here, before the events at the end of last issue. Trying to figure out the sequence of events was a little confusing but didn't take away from the overall story.

The Verdict

It's Matt Fraction's HAWKEYE. Fraction has been consistently entertaining us month after month. If you're at all concerned over the lack of David Aja art, there's no need to fear, Francesco Francavilla's art, color and layouts adds a great vibe to the story. For a book that many enjoy for the fun and jokes, there are some definite dark times headed our way. There's a downward spiral happening and you won't be able to look away. With the suspense and twists, you just might find yourself applauding Fraction after reading this issue.

I loved the paneling in this issue. It was very unique and it added to the flow of the story quite a bit.

Art was still amazing. This might have been my least favorite issue of Hawkguy, but it was still great.

Can't wait for the next trade to come out so I can finally catch up on this series :D

I didn't even know Franky was doing the art until you just said that. I knew he did the cover but I didn't pay attention to the names. He does a very good job at making this look just like Aja's but with his own style in there too. Can't wait to read it tonight.

Matt has that russian accent down. I can see Fraction talking like that while making breakfast for his kids........ "Here's your eggs Bro."

I still find Hawkeye to be very overrated. 10 issues and it has failed to grab me. Dropping this

I liked this issue. As it was really a .1 issue of the villain and how he ties into the killing. Also the art was great:)!!! Please let franco do more issues!

Favorite book on the shelves consistently for me, Francavilla is one of my favorite artists... but I think this was the weakest issue yet. Probably a three star book for me. Also found it a bit confusing at times, but I'll have to give it another read.

The shading of the characters and overall art blew my mind, incredible issue.

Another fantastic issue of Hawkeye. This series continues to be one of the consistent books I look forward to each month.

I liked this one well enough, but any art that isn't Aja's just isn't Hawkeye for me. And I want to know what's going to happen with this dude and Clint!

Having Francavilla on for an issue was a nice treat. I never mind a guest artist as long as it serves the story and its an artist I like. I really enjoyed how dark this issue was. 10 issues in and this title can still surprise me.

I'll agree that it was somewhat confusing, but not because the narrative itself was, but because I think the art was. I'm new'ish back to comics, and when I was into them last I was too young to keep track of artists and writers and such. Now, I know there are some industry people that are considered very talented, and the last thing I want to do is be disrespectful to a beloved artist.

Humbly, however, I'll say I think the way this was drawn made matters unnecessarily vague from time to time. I had to really look at things twice sometimes to even understand what was happening. One time on the very first page, and one time when Kate's leg is touched by our new mystery murderer guy. It wasn't indecipherable by any stretch, but after Aja's punchy, organic, minimalist-but-wonderful art, I found this to be pretty messy and obtuse in comparison.

Again, I say this with all due respect to the artist and people that like this artwork. It was, however, the weakest part of this issue to me.

I thought this served as a pretty good origin issue for this Kazi fellow. The art was good too, but this book sorely misses David Aja anytime he's absent IMO.

I liked it tho, stoked to see where things go from here.

IMO this was one of the best issues yet, if not the best!

I must agree with you guys. I read it today. I dont see anything great about this issue. I kinda enjoy the title but overall most of these issue have been average at best and people just seem to hop on its bang wagon as if it was best comic of the year. I still like this title even though i have the urged to give it the middle finger

One of the least interesting issues.

Cool artist. Dark backstory. I think Matt kind of mailed this one in though. It almost seemed like he needed a filler story until Aja came back. I'd give it 3.5 stars.
