Harley Quinn: Futures End #1 - Crappily Ever After

5

Harley and Joker are getting married? Is this for real?

The Good

This is what I want from a FUTURES END one-shot story. While the different titles we've been seeing this month have been playing different roles in the grand scheme of the Futures End story or the individual characters, a lot have felt like interludes or interruptions in the main series. This issue, like some of the others, is by the same creative team as the regular series. That means we get a story that feels natural and in sync with the rest of the series.

Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti set up the story nicely. We're going to have a meeting and marriage (?) between Joker and Harley. From the cover, you might gather it's in some sort of tropical paradise of sorts. That plays a big role in how the story works. It's a different setting for Harley and Amanda and Jimmy get to play around with some ideas before we get to the heart of the story.

It's always fun seeing Harley adapt to new surroundings. She simply has a knack for it and Conner and Palmiotti know how to map it all out perfectly. There are moments that teeter on the edge of absurdity but that's what makes this an enjoyable read. As the story progresses and we see the meeting between Harley and Joker (and beyond), you'll have a big smile on your face.

The more I see of Chad Hardin's art, the more I fall in love. This is truly a moment where it's fantastic to have the series regular artist working on this "special' issue. Alex Sinclair's colors deserve to be stared at and admired.

The Bad

Nothing to complain about. It might be a little crazy. It might be a story that would never happen. It doesn't matter when we can sit back and be enjoyed like this.

The Verdict

This just might be my favorite FUTURES END issue. Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti know how to cook up crazy and fun adventures for Harley. Having them joined by the regular team of Chad Hardin and Alex Sinclair is the icing on the cake. It's a great issue with bizarre situations but we wouldn't expect any less from Harley. Does she actually marry Joker? You'll have to read to find out. You'll be happy you did.
