Guardians of the Galaxy

4

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is expanding out into space and, yes, the movie is pretty far out.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is venturing into new territory. Many of us, myself included, were a little skeptical with how a Marvel Sci-Fi movie would play out. Comic fans are aware of who the Guardians of the Galaxy are but your average movie-goer might not be sure what to make of this.

Of course, all that sort of thinking is unnecessary. If you think about it, the different franchises within the Cinematic Universe have had different feels to them. Iron Man has dealt with the business/Stark Industry side, Thor has dealt with mythological gods and other realms, and Captain America has dealt with war and espionage. Of course The Avengers was pretty much pure superhero action, with a touch of sci-fi/alien invasions. Exploring the cosmic corner of the Cinematic Universe, we are introduced to a new set of heroes.

No Caption Provided

Unlike the other Marvel Studios films, Guardians of the Galaxy doesn't quite have the Avengers connection to tie it to the others. There is Thanos and the fact that his two "daughters" are in the movie. This might be enough for some. This is really a movie you can go into blindly, without having to worry how anyone is connected to one another. It's an origin story introducing us to characters many have never heard of.

The movie starts out with Peter Quill, Star-Lord. There's been slight variations to his origin in the comics (you can watch our video HERE on his history). We do see Peter on Earth as a child. I won't go into specifics, but there is an interesting twist on how he gets started on the path to becoming Star-Lord.

No Caption Provided

The movie jumps forward and soon we are introduced to all the different characters. This is a slight moment where the movie falters. Star-Lord, Rocket Raccoon, Groot, Gamora, and Drax don't know each other (actually, Rocket and Groot do). What the movie has to do, at this point, is bring them all together and get them to bond as a team. Obviously, this does happen. It feels a little rushed. Soon, they are gathered as a team to take on Ronan and his evil forces.

For the most part, all the characters are portrayed just as you'd want them, if you're familiar with their comic book counterparts. Chris Pratt's Star-Lord might not the version we want, but he does have a charming charismatic approach with the expected Marvel Studios brand of humor thrown in. He may be a bit of a goof at times but when necessary, he steps up and handles the conflict admirably.

No Caption Provided

Rocket Raccoon and Groot are the stand out characters. They too have the charm and appeal general audiences will gobble up. At the same time, they can easily hold their own in the middle of a fight. There are humorous moments with them but it fits in with the whole vibe of the movie. It might seem like an odd choice to bring these characters to the big screen but audiences will love them.

Drax took a little to warm up to. Soon you'll find yourself appreciating his presence. Sadly, Gamora's portrayal felt a little weak. In the comics, she's the deadliest women in the universe. While she is tough as hell in this movie, she's far from the force of nature we've seen in the comics. Hopefully this is something we'll get to see more of in future appearances.

Ronan's portrayal was pretty flat. As the movie's main antagonist, it felt like he was almost bored at times. Sure, Ronan is a stoic and calm character. He just didn't quite have the menacing feel you would expect in a movie on this scale. The use of the Sakaarans felt reminiscent to the Chitauri in The Avengers. They're largely here as cannon fodder.

No Caption Provided

The visuals are top notch. When we're talking about battles in space or over alien worlds, poor visuals will stand out and pull viewers out of the story. The different worlds and alien species we see look great. You truly get a sense for the size and scale of the cosmic Cinematic Universe. You'll get excited with each new location you see.

There is a pretty liberal use of licensed music throughout the movie. It's part of who Star-Lord's character is but it really makes the movie stand out from other Marvel Studios films. While I enjoyed the music (I did buy the soundtrack), it almost felt like too much was used. On the other hand, it does help to give the movie a different feel from the others and also provides a slight anchor to Earth.

No Caption Provided

When the first clips were released for Guardians of the Galaxy, many feared this would be too much of a comedy to fit in with the other Marvel Studios films. There is a healthy dose of humor but what else would you expect from a movie with a talking raccoon and tree-like creature? This is the sort of movie you go to when you're looking for a good time. The pacing might be off and some of the characters might not feel right, but it's a great start to a new franchise for Marvel. It's no wonder they've already announced a sequel and animated series. There is a lot of potential with the Guardians. We have another area of the Cinematic Universe to explore and that means we'll get more movies that don't feel redundant to similar to the Avengers-related movies. This is a movie I will definitely see more than once in theaters.

Lmfao. There is so much wrong in this paragraph. I think you need to stop taking yourself and "comic book films" too seriously. There is nothing realistic about any of these films. Actually DC trying to make their universe more dark and realistic makes it even more ridiculous. That is where Marvel has trumped DC in movies, they don't take themselves seriously and neither should anyone else. These movies are supposed to be fun filled action packed tongue and cheek humor that wraps up in some hope. You know what else is "Dark, Gritty and Realistic"? $hit. Doesn't make it good.

@lordrequiem: Neither the mind gem or the power gem were used on a universal scale either. Loki mind controlled only a had full of dudes and for all its power, Malekith couldn't even fully destroy a building.

I don't think you're going to ever see the IG and the stones reach their full power like in comics - and frankly there's no need to.

It was pretty decent. Ronan was very underwhelming and I didn't like the fact that they made him the primary antagonist (because he's not really a bad guy), and they didn't utilise much of the Universal Weapon's potential, probably because the remedial populace would compare it to Mjolnir.

The worst part of this film was the Nova Corps by far, they don't fly, they don't have any abilities, they don't do anything! I didn't grow to love Drax, I thought he wasn't a strong as he should have been and I agree that Gamora wasn't portrayed as being deadly enough.

Benecio Del Toro's character was completely off in comparison to how he was in Thor: The Dark World, so he made no sense.

All that aside, the movie is pretty enjoyable though. Not Avengers calibre but a solid effort.

Awesome movie, I absolutely loved it. I haven't laughed so hard at any Marvel movie to date. Chris Pratt quickly became one of my favourite actors thanks to this gig and did a very good job at portaying Star-Lord. Rocket just stole the show for me, he was hilarious and in the end the movie shown he actually cares for Groot despite his behaviour towards him. Now Groot had a great mix of brutality and childish innocence which I loved to see, also his CGI was just godly. Gamora was just a standard badass package and Bautista did a surprisingly good job at portraying Drax. IMO Ronan was the weak link here, he never shown any other expression except his ''lower jaw out and spitting a lot while talking'' face which I found rather sad. (Also Yondu was simply awesome and the twist to his weapon was just jaw-droping.)

I fell in love with this movie, the enviroments were absolutely astonishing and when the Guardians left one area it made me sad that I can't stop the movie and just look at all the details. With that said I give props to the CGI people, they did a great job.

11/10 would wonder what the f*ck was Howard, the Duck doing in the movie again.

Great movie but I think certain actors and actresses were wasting their talents in playing bit roles like John C Reilly, Glenn Close and Djimon Hounsou. As for Howard the Duck, I think they should have used the original animatronic version during the post credits scene rather than making him CGI. The CGI version looked too much like a cartoon rather than an actual alien.

i watched this today and i was somewhat disappointed. for a scifi movie it is ok. gamora and drax seems so puny compared with the comic. there is no way movie drax could ever take on thanos. when marvel does make a thanos featured movie, i don't think it will live up to the hype. nebula i felt was just squeezed into the movie just to have another female. i would have liked it better if they used the nebula before she went bald. so if there were sequels, show the transformation to the bald nebula. for me winter soldier is still the best of the year.

fox should make a starjammers movie. they could easily take on these guardians.

Was winter solider better? Yeah, but I still give this movie an A+. It was just as good as Avengers, you got the same amount of excitement for watching it. I'm glad they made a non Avengers film. I hope they make some more as well. This movie really seemed geared to adults though. Their was a lot of cursing and sex jokes. As an adult I enjoyed it, but I wouldn't take my young nephews to see this film. It looked incredible on Imax 3D.

Saw it today and I loved it! It felt a bit choppy at first when they start meeting each other, but when the guardians started banding together, the marvel magic happened. I must admit I was the most impressed with Rocket, his portrayal was amazing. I sort of agree with the reviewer's opinion of Gamora, she didn't feel intimidating enough for me. I'm just so glad to have trusted in this movie from the beginning and for it to have been worth it. I already want to see it again.

I preferred Nebula over Ronin as the villain. I also enjoyed that they added in Cosmo in the film. Just wished they have shown at least one Nova centurion and not just the Denarians. But I stilled enjoyed the film. Rocket stole the spotlight for me.

Howard the Duck FTW.

This is a slight review. No spoilers added, just my feels and opinions.

I liked it a lot! I'm not all that familiar with these characters which made me even more excited to see because I wouldn't have any biases. That being said, I do agree with what you said about Gamora. I was expecting way more badassery than we got to see, but she was still likable. I wish Drax would have been more... something. Interesting, I guess. But I did appreciate seeing him kick ass. I also agree with what you said about Ronan. The movie was still great and had laughs and amazing visuals. I can't wait to see the next one because this one left me with a feeling that it can only get better. Overall, it was imperfect, but none the less great.

@war_killerWhat I understood was that he wanted revenge on Xandar for being at war with the Kree empire for such a long time. So long that his grandfather and father died at war and he is still pissed at them and doesn't agree with the Kree-Xandar peace treaty. I could be wrong though but that's what I got from it all.

Ah, okay that makes his actions more sensible. I remember him being mad at the Nova Corps about their peace treaty, but I missed the part about the Kree-Xandar war bit. Makes more sense when now that I think about it. I actually don't find Ronan's actions that odd now.

Everyone pretty much said what I was about to say..

4/5

Pros

-The main characters got depth and development

-Chemistry was spot on

-Humorous in different ways

-Great action scenes

-Great visuals

-Wasn't all humor.. There were some good emotional and serious moments

-Gamora was fine to me.. She was at times weak and sympathetic but that's what I like to see.. I can't stand characters that "force" badassery down my throat

I can actually tell Gunn put heart into this film instead of it being half assed

The weak link were the villains.. Ronan got offed before he fully became interesting.. He was badass but he left too quickly.. The battle between him and the guardians were badass until Quill pulled that lame ass dance to distract him..

Nebula was better and her fight with Gamora was great.. She needed a bit more depth but she was sadistic and intimidating.. Gillan has a lot of talent and like with TWS both don't get the amount of screen time you would expect

It's like this in a nutshell.. Villains start off cold then the second they get hot they get taken away and it leaves you with a "WTF" feeling

And to be clear there are numerous ways to write a villain not everyone has to be a Loki(overrated) and Bane(can't believe people actually used this example) to be a good villain..

The build up for Thanos however is completely chilling and it leaves you wanting more from him which is what Gunn and Feige wanted

It"s impressive how much this movie had to cover and still be a fun ride. Introducing 5 heroes, setting up villains, bringing the team together, explaining infinity gems, while still being fun and dramatic, Avengers already had character intros, and the team connected via nick fury. With all this in mind in amazed how great that movie was.

Guardians was fantastic! I can't say a single bad thing about it. I'd give it 4.5 stars easily. I know Comic Vine doesn't work on the half star system, but it deserves every bit of 4.5 if not 5 imo. It had great action and tons of laughs from start to finish! Another excellent film from Marvel Studios.

"It's not perfect." "It had flaws." Which Marvel Studios film has no flaws? None of them have no flaws. Hardly a fair criticism. "It had flaws." Of course it did.

Taste is subjective, so what one person sees as flawless, another may not, but not being flawless isn't something reviewers should ever bring up. It's almost the standard. Being flawless is what you SHOULD focus on if something manages to achieve it, because THAT is rare. Telling us (This goes for anyone) that you think it was great but flawed is telling us NOTHING.

I thought it was amazing. I think it was as good as Captain America: T.W.S. in terms of how much of a blast I had, just in a different way. I can't choose between them. I loved things about Cap more, and Guardians more.

We go into movies filling in gaps in story subconsciously because we know the characters. We can often forget that some things aren't made clear enough to the audience. There was a lot to do, but I do feel the Nova Corps or the Kree could've had a bit of monologue explaining why they're at war. Maybe have Ronan in a meeting where they denounce him for disrupting peace.

That's one flaw I had that I feel is as objective as I can be. Though his motives WERE explained, I just don't think it was handled the best it could've been. An extra scene wouldn't have hurt. Rooker needs to stop phoning it in. He's the white Samuel L. Jackson, I think. He just played himself. It took me out of his scenes. A few more flaws I had were as follows. Explained at length under spoiler shroud:

Ronan being killed off and the circumstances in which it happened. Peter Quill was amazing the whole time, but then he did the dance distraction and it was very nearly the drunk Stark scene from Iron Man 2. It was AWFUL. He basically reverted into being Andy Dwyer from Parks and Rec. NOT a fan. In moments where the villain is within reach of their plan coming to fruition, you either have to let them achieve it, stop them before they can or have heroes somehow undo the plan after. They let Ronan come within seconds of bringing his Uniweapon down and exacting burning revenge...but he stops to watch Quill dance? No. That's terrible. If someone killed your loved ones and you spent years hunting them, would you pause for thought if they started dancing in front of you? It sucked. Killing him sucked, too. Especially considering he was such a promising villain/future neutral character to use. I feel as though they just tossed away a character they could have made amazing in future movies.

Gamora didn't come off AS badass as I'd have liked and the scene where she got dragged away annoyed me because she had to be saved by a male character. Quill could've shown up, sure. The scene should've been him arrogantly trying to save her, her fighting back and convincing Drax, mid fight, that she is not on the enemy's side. Then maybe a glance at Quill after like, "I told you I could handle myself." The fact that she was literally helpless, until he saved her, was annoying. There aren't many Marvel women in movies, so it's important we embolden the ones we have, man. Especially with the latest atrocity involving Janet Van Dyne's role in Ant-Man.

Everything else, I absolutely loved. I thought Thanos (We all know he was in it) was INCREDIBLE. Based on that ONE scene, it set the tone perfectly. Why? Because when Ronan threatens him, you actually feel bad. I was like, "You better hope someone kills you before Thanos."

Bautista surprised me GREATLY. I never expected his character would get such play or be so good.

Rocket and Groot are going to take over the world. When I first mentioned Guardians to my girl, a non-comic-reading M.C.U. lover, she balked at the idea of a talking not-raccoon and tree. The trailer helped sway her, and now she said she's naming her new cats Rocket and Groot. I was afraid Cooper would phone it in or Groot wouldnt be present enough, but boy did Cooper kill this. The greatest Marvel Studios page-to-screen adaptation of a character so far, maybe? The music was a joy. It felt like a Tarantino co-directed Marvel movie.

I think four out of five is fair. Just because of this logic: I loved it every bit as much as I loved Cap 2. However, I had more issues with it than Cap 2. I loved it as much, I had as much fun watching it...BUT...I had more issues with it. So, I think @g_man was right on the money.

As for the post-credits, even I had to reality check my expectations. Come on, it was a fun joke. It was a nudge and a wink. They weaved connecting threads to the future and other movies in the actual movie, then still kept it very self-contained by not throwing in a bewildering (To some) post-credits scene. You have to consider the reason this movie might be doing so well is because it really is the first since Iron Man that requires NO prior viewing. It's like a #1 issue.

Now, the problem will come if they fill a movie slot with the character from the post-creds. Just...no. Don't do that. Cameos are fine in cosmic movies with aliens, but nobody wants effort poured into THAT film when we need (NEED) a Captain Marvel, Black Panther or Black Widow/Hawkeye film. It was hilarious hearing reactions, though. One person said, "OH MY GOD! THEY PUT DONALD DUCK IN THIS MOVIE?! F**K DISNEY!"

So, that's my standing on this movie.

It was so stupid though, wasn't it? Not "ha ha" stupid but more like they did solely just for the sake of it. It's like Rick Rollin' every Marvel fan. Why, Marvel? Why? ;(

I thought it was funny

Marvel trolled us big time lol. Well played Marvel, well played.

Trolling implies they were trying to get a negative rise out of fans.

Marvel as been absolutely killing it this year with movies. Cap 2, X-men, Spidey, now GOTG have all been brilliant. This is probably my second favourite Marvel cinematic universe film after Avengers, it just blew me away with how entertaining it was, comedy, action, special effects, all of it was wonderful. Drax was honestly probably one of the funniest characters.

With the quality films like Cap and GOTG Marvel are putting out I say bring on Avengers 2 asap.

It's weird that the guys at Giant Bomb seemed to have liked the Guardians movie more than G-Man.

Just saw it today. Fantastic movie, villain was a little flat but not as bad as a lot of reviewers are making him out to be. I thought all the Guardians were brilliant and for me Star-Lord and Gamora stole the show. 10/10 or 5/5 whatever it was brilliant

I purchased my advance ticket months ago and I cannot wait until I see this tonight! I'm no fan of this team, but I have always been drawn to Rocket Raccoon because he reminds me of Wolverine. I wasn't excited with Bradley Cooper providing Rocket's voice becuase in my mind, Rocket's voice is deep and raspy (more like Wolverine). However, from the clips I've seen, it appears as though Cooper has done a good portrayal, so this is definitely something I can overlook. I just hope the story is solid and this isn't just a movie full of Rocket cracking jokes.

Definitely a 5/5 on the CV scale, enjoyed the hell out of it. Saw it Wednesday, seeing it again today and probably Monday as well.
