Guardians of the Galaxy

4

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is expanding out into space and, yes, the movie is pretty far out.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is venturing into new territory. Many of us, myself included, were a little skeptical with how a Marvel Sci-Fi movie would play out. Comic fans are aware of who the Guardians of the Galaxy are but your average movie-goer might not be sure what to make of this.

Of course, all that sort of thinking is unnecessary. If you think about it, the different franchises within the Cinematic Universe have had different feels to them. Iron Man has dealt with the business/Stark Industry side, Thor has dealt with mythological gods and other realms, and Captain America has dealt with war and espionage. Of course The Avengers was pretty much pure superhero action, with a touch of sci-fi/alien invasions. Exploring the cosmic corner of the Cinematic Universe, we are introduced to a new set of heroes.

No Caption Provided

Unlike the other Marvel Studios films, Guardians of the Galaxy doesn't quite have the Avengers connection to tie it to the others. There is Thanos and the fact that his two "daughters" are in the movie. This might be enough for some. This is really a movie you can go into blindly, without having to worry how anyone is connected to one another. It's an origin story introducing us to characters many have never heard of.

The movie starts out with Peter Quill, Star-Lord. There's been slight variations to his origin in the comics (you can watch our video HERE on his history). We do see Peter on Earth as a child. I won't go into specifics, but there is an interesting twist on how he gets started on the path to becoming Star-Lord.

No Caption Provided

The movie jumps forward and soon we are introduced to all the different characters. This is a slight moment where the movie falters. Star-Lord, Rocket Raccoon, Groot, Gamora, and Drax don't know each other (actually, Rocket and Groot do). What the movie has to do, at this point, is bring them all together and get them to bond as a team. Obviously, this does happen. It feels a little rushed. Soon, they are gathered as a team to take on Ronan and his evil forces.

For the most part, all the characters are portrayed just as you'd want them, if you're familiar with their comic book counterparts. Chris Pratt's Star-Lord might not the version we want, but he does have a charming charismatic approach with the expected Marvel Studios brand of humor thrown in. He may be a bit of a goof at times but when necessary, he steps up and handles the conflict admirably.

No Caption Provided

Rocket Raccoon and Groot are the stand out characters. They too have the charm and appeal general audiences will gobble up. At the same time, they can easily hold their own in the middle of a fight. There are humorous moments with them but it fits in with the whole vibe of the movie. It might seem like an odd choice to bring these characters to the big screen but audiences will love them.

Drax took a little to warm up to. Soon you'll find yourself appreciating his presence. Sadly, Gamora's portrayal felt a little weak. In the comics, she's the deadliest women in the universe. While she is tough as hell in this movie, she's far from the force of nature we've seen in the comics. Hopefully this is something we'll get to see more of in future appearances.

Ronan's portrayal was pretty flat. As the movie's main antagonist, it felt like he was almost bored at times. Sure, Ronan is a stoic and calm character. He just didn't quite have the menacing feel you would expect in a movie on this scale. The use of the Sakaarans felt reminiscent to the Chitauri in The Avengers. They're largely here as cannon fodder.

No Caption Provided

The visuals are top notch. When we're talking about battles in space or over alien worlds, poor visuals will stand out and pull viewers out of the story. The different worlds and alien species we see look great. You truly get a sense for the size and scale of the cosmic Cinematic Universe. You'll get excited with each new location you see.

There is a pretty liberal use of licensed music throughout the movie. It's part of who Star-Lord's character is but it really makes the movie stand out from other Marvel Studios films. While I enjoyed the music (I did buy the soundtrack), it almost felt like too much was used. On the other hand, it does help to give the movie a different feel from the others and also provides a slight anchor to Earth.

No Caption Provided

When the first clips were released for Guardians of the Galaxy, many feared this would be too much of a comedy to fit in with the other Marvel Studios films. There is a healthy dose of humor but what else would you expect from a movie with a talking raccoon and tree-like creature? This is the sort of movie you go to when you're looking for a good time. The pacing might be off and some of the characters might not feel right, but it's a great start to a new franchise for Marvel. It's no wonder they've already announced a sequel and animated series. There is a lot of potential with the Guardians. We have another area of the Cinematic Universe to explore and that means we'll get more movies that don't feel redundant to similar to the Avengers-related movies. This is a movie I will definitely see more than once in theaters.

I saw it with a couple of friends. I didn't really like it, TBH. I actually fell asleep between the first and second segment. I know what they were going for, but I was just not the audience for this particular story.

Haven't watched any trailers for movies for the past 1.5 years (yes, it's so saddening). Thus, you can imagine how potentially epic this movie could have been to me.

First 45 minutes was a 10/10. Absolutely loved it. Ronin was meh, made the movie a 8.5/10. Then the unoriginal mass tiny jets came out, made it an 8/10. I give the movie an 8.2 out of 10. Gotta work on closing your movies marvel.

I agree with the negatives about Drax, Gamora, Ronan, and the fodder aliens. Plus it was annoying how lots of alien races were signified a being alien by giving them random ridges on their faces or arms; that's 60s Star Trek style stuff. But it was pretty funny.

@chrisj_1: Regarding your question about Knowhere as it compares to the full bodied Celestial depicted in the film, I was wondering the exact same thing. According to Wikipedia Knowhere in the comics is described as a "dimensional crossroads and scientific observatory" it gives no mention to it having any connection to the Celestials. As far as the movie goes I just see it as being an oversight on the part of the film makers, however I know for me just seeing a Celestial depicted onscreen (however brief) made me not even pay that much attention to it.

Very true regardless of any inconsistencies it is extremely epic to know we have full size Celestials in this universe without reducing them to something stupid like the Galactus cloud in Fantastic Four.

Anyone find it weird that they show Knowhere as being a massive planet sized head of a Celestial then they show Eson the Searcher, a full on Celestial, later on and while he's admittedly massive nowhere near the size he'd need to be to have a head THAT huge? Like how big is Knowhere portrayed to be in the comics? I'm just wondering if this scaling is accurate.

But onto the movie the tone was perfect definitely not kiddy I don't really get why people would think that there's at least one or two jokes that would just go over their heads (haha). The thing about making a serious movie with random bouts of comedic elements like Winter Solider is that it feels out of place as opposed to this movie where everything just felt completely smooth and natural. The main characters were great in my opinion aside from nerfing Gamora running into this without much prior knowledge of them as comic book characters I connected to them just as characters just fine every line every interaction they had with each other was perfect they mesh just fine and you really no them as people by the end of it me and my buddies kept making how each one would react to this and that and it felt perfect they felt (not exactly real) but fleshed out. And they grew as people in the film themselves.

Tone pacing music and especially the main characters where utterly perfect in this film. The villain Ronan fell a little flat the plot itself is well simple but this movie triumphs in getting the general audience both knowing and loving all it's main characters and personally I think that's what it's going for and it's just perfect in that regard and as a guy that feels character interaction is definitely the most important part of a film then this is my favorite Marvel film.

Overall I enjoyed the film, thought the central team was solid and the dialogue very good indeed. the only issues I did have were that I thought Ronan was kind of pointless, didn't care or find him all that threatening. The Nova corps seemed to be lacking something, I've never liked Karen Gillen's 'acting' and that didn't change here. but the biggest problem I had was that I think they mishandled Thanos completely. It should have had an appearance similar to The Emperors in Empire Strikes Back, in the shadows kind of thing and the CGI wasn't up to snuff on him, it felt a bit deflating to see him so much in such a minor capacity.

I was disappointed with this film sadly. That's not to say I didn't still like it, or that I think it's bad overall, but rather that it didn't meet up to the expectations I had based on reviews i'd read and things i'd been told. Many, many people have told me that they consider it to be better than the Avengers, and in fact the best Marvel Superhero film so far. At this point I have to wonder what exactly it is they smoked before going to see this. The soundtrack is great (Though at times it actually took me out of the film, and I felt clashed with the alien setting. This was very unsettling for me.), the characters are all different and unique, and things progress at a solid pace.

However, Ronan sucked. There's really no other way for me to say it. At no point did I feel threatened by him, and I wanted to because he had in Infinity Gem/Stone, and I genuinely like his character in the comics. But he just didn't do it here. I don't know if it was bad writing, or because we saw Thanos and knew he was directly behind the scenes here, but it is what it is. I also felt that the Nova Corps wasn't portrayed up to par, with everyone just being human/human looking alien. This, along with the fact that they really didn't go too much into any of these alien beings or places, diminishes my hopes that Marvel will continue to expand their film franchise outside of Earth. (Though GOTG 2 is already set, so I have some hope.)

The main characters were extremely weak in this film (From a writing standpoint, though Drax also felt similar to Ronan, in that I expected more from him) This is in stark (lol) contrast to the Avengers, though I also realize that the latter film had the benefit of far more setup than this one, wherein every single hero was introduced before the team-up itself. Here they didn't have that as an option and just had to do the best they could. I get it, but it still didn't turn out well. In this case though I expect the next film to be better, since they've all been introduced now, so hopefully Marvel will be able to give a decent amount of focus and development to each. I also found it incredibly unbelievable that they were calling themselves friends by the end of this film.

Perhaps the worst part of this film though was the dialogue. My God it was just extremely terrible, and laughable. It in fact reminded me of Transformers Age of Extinction (Terrible movie) in that regard. Moving beyond that though I still found the film to be good overall, and I think it did the most important thing for any superhero movie: Made me interested in the characters, and want to check out the source material to find out more about them.

I loved so much of this movie, and am impressed that Marvel pulled it off effectively. This is the first time the studio did a team movie without having solo movies to introduce the characters. So I can forgive the rushed feel of their team-up.

They cover a lot of the Cosmic woo-woo backstory and let new viewers know about why these "artifacts" that keep popping up in the movies are so damn important. The characters each get their own moments to shine and grow. I agree with @g_man, Gamora was not her normal hard and killer self, but looking at how anti-social the other players were (except Quill), someone had to be a bit softer to get everyone to start talking.

The villains were good but Ronan was a bit wooden. I did feel that he embodied his anger a lot better than Malekith though. Malekith was angry for well...war reasons. Ronan came off as a fanatic. A cold, dedicated, zealot who was so focused on his goal that not even being threatened by the most powerful being in the universe deterred him. Still wooden but a lot more believable.
Yondu was the shit, and I think we can all agree that we want his weapon.
As for the controversial post-credit scene, *slight spoilers* I was okay with that bit of trolling. It was a bit of fun. Looking back at the past scenes, they all helped to build to the Avengers or the next big film. Right now looking at the way Wave 2 has gone and with what's on the horizon (Ant Man, Doctor Strange), there was no logical connection tying GotG back to Earth or the next movie. Thor, Cap, and Iron Man are all off doing their own things and evolving as characters. Ant Man and Doctor Strange are still so early in development that it would make no sense to link back. Granted if Marvel wanted to tease something up to Avengers 3, then I agree that some other nod like Warlock's Cocoon cracking (if it really is that), or maybe having someone run off with the Eye of Agamoto or one of the other Gems that the collector had, that would make sense. But it was nice to have GotG be it's own movie for now. It was a weird fun movie and had a weird fun post-credits scene. This also allows marvel to put it's cinematic stake on the surprise characters so maybe they can do something with them later.
All in all this is easily one of my favorite movies, and seeing the character of the first comic I ever bought as a kid (Rocket Racoon) come to life, was epic. I am so going to see it again.

Just go back from it. It's probably Marvel's second auterist feautre next to Iron Man 3 but like that film battles against and ultimatly succumbs to studio convention and shows the limitation of the Marvel formula as it currently stands. Lame villian and excruciating exposition that dose nothing but slow the movie down and bog t down in connection it dosen't really need.

I got to see this today! This is the first super hero-ish movie I've gotten to see since Superman had a kid! (I think that happened, right? I still haven't seen all of that movie yet.) Guardians of the Galaxy was great! All of the characters were fun, but Gamora could have had a bit more depth to her character imo. Drax, Groot, and Rocket were defiantly my favorite characters here. Fun movie all around.

I walked into the film without any intimate knowledge of the characters and knew only of their connection to the Infinity Gauntlet. My expectations were high based on the hype and buzz generated lately.

With that said, I agree with the review. On the plus side, the soundtrack, humor and special effects were great. On the other hand, the situation that bonds the characters felt forced and rushed. Additionally, neither Drax nor Gamora were particularly interesting compared to Groot, Starlord or Rocket Raccoon.

Overall, a good flick with flaws. I've heard it said GotG is the "Star Wars of our generation" recently. In my opinion, I find that assertion absurd.

I thought the characters were flat and that their motivations were hard to believe, even given the context of a fantastical sci-fi setting. There was next to nothing in terms of setting or world building, which seems like a missed opportunity to set the stage for future Marvel movies. Scenes ground to a halt while characters played the exposition game explaining plot devices to the audience.

The fights that weren't at a spacecraft level were laughably one-sided, with either the heroes wiping the floor with the cannon fodder, or having their asses handed to them by the villains. Until one of the last confrontations there was not an interesting back-and-forth fight.

Was not a fan of the translation of Gamora, the deadliest woman in the galaxy, into her cinematic form. I would have liked to seen her a much stronger character.

I didn't care for the tone of the humor carried throughout most of the movie, apart from Rocket. I could probably watch a whole movie with Rocket and Groot wreaking havoc. I found the pop music inclusions to be a poor fit and often jarring.

I went into the movie with lowered expectations due to the trailer, and those were met. It wasn't a bad movie, per se. But the style humor was a big turn-off for me, and likely led to me not letting other quibbles slide that I might give a pass to in a movie I enjoyed watching more.

Seeing Howard the Duck gave me such nostalgia!

I remember watching the old Howard the Duck movie when I was like 13... I probably shouldn't have been watching it. I remember being like "wtf is going on in this movie lol"

And then I read him later on in a Dr Strange comic. So I was surprised and happy to see him.

I thought it was a funny nod to the character and the kind of movie this was. It was nice change for Marvel to not be so serious with their end credits scenes

I think what some are trying to say is...There are different ways to making a movie..

GOTG has humor/emotional/weird scenes

It's bright and colorful

The Dark Knight trilogy is what a lot of others call "dark realistic" and is considered by many the best movies in its genre

The problem lies when people have this mindset that's basically "Realism=better quality" that's not always the case.. Not only in movies but in other mediums like anime for example.. For example I get some backlash for liking an over the top anime like Gurren Lagann over Evangelion.. People say NGE has realism and that makes it better by default.. Contray to popular belief.. No it doesn't. If the movie or anime is good it doesn't matter if its dark or light hearted... DOFP was both a bit dark and had humor.. GOTG was hilarious but it was also a bit dark and it was serious when need be

It comes down to preference

Too much emphasis on comedy and light heartedness. Standard Disney formula to attract kids to this nonsense. I mean, Marvel seem not to take comic movies seriously. This, like all MCU movies are kiddie fare and not grown up. Comic fans want maturity in their movies, and luckily we have DC to treat their movies like Man of Steel and the Nolan Batman movies with a grown up perspective and not pandering to bullshit family friendliness.

Lmfao. There is so much wrong in this paragraph. I think you need to stop taking yourself and "comic book films" too seriously. There is nothing realistic about any of these films. Actually DC trying to make their universe more dark and realistic makes it even more ridiculous. That is where Marvel has trumped DC in movies, they don't take themselves seriously and neither should anyone else. These movies are supposed to be fun filled action packed tongue and cheek humor that wraps up in some hope. You know what else is "Dark, Gritty and Realistic"? $hit. Doesn't make it good.

Not that I expect you to change your mind based on your post history, but you must read a pitiful selection of comics if you truly believe all comics are " aren't taking seriously and tongue and cheek"

Furthermore, everything about film is subjective and therefore your own post is also invalid. He doesn't have to like what you like, and vice versa. And your opinion is no more valid than his.

And bottom line is, Marvel has all ready shown they're capable of making films with substance and still have the humor - ala Captain America. Those two concepts are not mutually exclusive. You don't have to throw away any sort of meaning just to have "fun". And just because something has meaning doesn't make it "not-fun". Fun is...like everything else...SUBJECTIVE.

You know what else doesn't take itself seriously? Transformers. And people rat on that all of them. You know what does take itself seriously and was loads of fun? X-Men Days of Future past. Again, these concepts are not mutually exclusive.

You aren't seriously comparing Transformers with GoTG are you?

But again. Not that I expect you to change your mind. I'm sure if Marvel ever did a dark gritty movie you'll be the first one there to champion it. Just don't pretend like you are more just than just because you like everything they do when someone dares question something they do. Popular opinions are still opinions - not facts.

Btw, in case you didn't read between in the rest of my post, you attacking people for daring not to blindly love every Marvel decision is getting old. You should probably stop it.

@saint_wildcard: If we're being technical (and fair) Bradley Cooper was voted sexiest man alive, and both Lee Pace and Josh Brolin are great actors.

Honestly I couldn't find fault with this film. Each character was excellently portrayed and showed great depth. Despite the fact that there was a lot of humour the film also had emotional parts too showing off the acting skill of the actors. The film once again showed marvels willingness to spend time on characters. I couldn't help thinking through the film that: marvel wasn't scared to put 9ft tall tree and a raccoon in a film but dc are scared of doing Wonder Woman. I'm not trying to say what dc is doing is bad but they need to have faith in there characters. Needless to say the next few years are going to be very awesome for both companies.
