Guardians of the Galaxy: Free Comic Book Day #1 - Welcome to the Guardians of the Galaxy Review

4

Who are the Guardians and why is Agent Venom joining the team? New and old readers will dig this issue.

The Good

Free Comic Book Day issues are a mixed bag. This issue is as well, but in a good way. Who are the Guardians of the Galaxy? This is an obvious question to comic book readers familiar with the series. Being that this is an issue many that don’t normally read the series might pick up, it’s the perfect time and place to recap who the members of the team are. This is done in a way where it doesn’t quite feel like we’re simply getting a rehash of information. With a certain person giving us the information, there’s a slightly different take as you see their personal opinion on everyone. With the movie coming out in a few months, this might be the first time many really get a taste of who they all are.

For those that have been reading the series by Brian Michael Bendis, it still is an important chapter in the series. We’ve know for a bit that Flash Thompson would be joining the team for some reason in his Agent Venom guise. When this was first announced, it didn’t make a lot of sense. The way it’s laid out here, it’s a believable reason. There is one comment that sets up an interesting plot line and the last couple panels also make you wonder if there are other reasons as well for Venom to join the team.

Nick Bradshaw’s art is fun to see. As a fan of his work, it’s great to see a well known artist on a FCBD rather than a random unknown artist. We’re all digging Sara Pichelli on the series but Bradshaw shows he has a good grasp on the characters.

There are also previews for Jim Starlin’s THANOS: THE INFINITY REVELATION graphic novel and some preview pages for SPIDER-VERSE. Both are pretty cool and give you an idea whether or not you should pick them up.

The Bad

The main Guardians story was good and important to the series but it was short. Most of it was simply a short description of who everyone was. Again, this is great for new readers but not crucial for those already familiar with them.

The THANOS and SPIDER-VERSE previews were good but getting previews in a FCBD is a bit of a let down.

The Verdict

If you’re reading Brian Michael Bendis’ GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, you’re going to want to pick up this issue. If you’re new to the series or are looking forward to the movie, this will give you a great idea what you need to know about everyone. Venom is joining the team and Nick Bradshaw does a great job illustrating him and the other members of the team. This lets us know why and how he comes on board and sets things up for the regular series. The story did feel short but we also get previews for Jim Starlin’s THANOS graphic novel and the upcoming SPIDER-VERSE. This is a pretty cool FREE comic.

Is there not digital editions for Free Comic Book Day?

@v_scarlotte_rose: @jonny_anonymous: the big name FCBD issues tend to end up on Comixology for free (DC, Image, Marvel, maybe Valiant) and some of the smaller random ones as well (Red 5, Top Shelf) for a limited time, I forget how it was last year but I think a couple were the same day and others the next Wednesday.

I remember waiting weeks for the Valiant FCBD issue on Comixology

@jonny_anonymous: I wouldn't be surprised, my memory isn't as good for the digital stuff plus I get one copy of each FCBD issue at work so I don't pay much attention to the digital editions as I prefer print.

I wouldn't be surprised if Valiant only released one of their FCBD issues online for free, whichever one they decided is most likely to bring in the most new readers.

I so much more loved the artwork in this then in GotG 14 for Venom. Flash and his Agent Venom guise both looked fantastic, not to mention the Guardians looking much better. Flash Thompson' s Ranger Beret with thw Venom emblem made me mark out I won't lie. Pkus seeing Tony call Rocket the "greatest tech mind in the galaxy" is quite the compliment.

So far I'm excited for Flash's addition to the team and can't wait for GotG 15.

This was a cool issue. Would've liked to have seen an actual story, instead of just "This is [Character], he/she is [Description]", though. The previews were alright. The Infinity Revelation looks cool, although I'm still a little confused on what it's about. Spiderverse is going to be fun. Very excited to see Morlun's return.

Hmm I wouldnt have rated it so high. At least not as high as Futures End. The main story was super short and I thought the art was just average. I probably wouldve given it a 3 to Futures End's 5.

One thing I don't understand about this issue, unless I'm missing something, is why can't you call Rocket Raccoon a raccoon? Or even call him Rocket Raccoon anymore, it makes no sense to me.

I think Nick Bradshaw draws my favorite Groot.

Did their outfits change to match the movie? They looked different when they were in all-new X-men.

The art was mostly great outside of when characters were in conversation mode. Their teeth looked gritted. If I have one complaint, it's Tony's remark about knowing Gamora on a private level. Come on now, I think we get it.

Overall, great little intro to the Guardians. I was confused as heck about the Spider-Man snippet but once I got it through my thick skull, I don't know how to take this Spider-verse thing that's coming up. Plus, the villain reminds me very much of the villain in Elektra's new book.

The Spider-verse preview is cool! (heard about Morlun before from the podcast, and he makes a badass entrance here) It would've been great if they did more of that instead for this FCBD issue.

I also thought this when I was reading and my only assumption is he's being called a name that others have given to him, like some other super hero's who originally had a name for them self but end up being called something else by the public

Does anyone know what comic follows on from this one?

Assuming its spider verse since on the last panel it says to be continued on spider verse but i wanted to double check
