Guardians of the Galaxy #4

3

The team takes some much needed time off after escaping the king's custody... but after broadcasting their victory across the galaxy, it's only a matter of time before trouble finds them again.

The Good

After Groot saved the day in the last issue, the team is looking to celebrate and understandably so (that bar shot totally looks like concept art from the film, doesn't it?!). This approach paves the way for a mostly lighthearted issue, focusing on banter between the group, some silly action, and eventually, a key scene surrounding Gamora.

Writer Brian Michael Bendis doesn't let us down when it comes to the script and lighthearted nature of this chapter. Seeing the group celebrate is a fair amount of fun and Drax's readiness to brawl absolutely put a smile on my face. And fret not, Rocket Raccoon amuses without saying "blam! murdered you!" or anything along those lines. The character definitely needed a breather from that catch phrase and it's nice to see it doesn't appear in this issue. Additionally, we finally get a glimpse of why Gamora is called "the most dangerous woman in the galaxy," although I'm sure the conclusion is sure to disappoint some die-hard fans.

Sara Pichelli has a style which fits the atmosphere of this issue pretty well. The bar fight is a little messy at times and I'm not the biggest fan of two faces, but everything else (from laser blasts to holograms) delivers and gives this book the out there and sci-fi appearance it needs. While the bar fight is a tad sloppy, Gamora's big fight is presented in a very enjoyable manner, making it super easy to follow and appreciate every motion.

The Bad

Without any dialogue or knowledge of who's on the roster, I'd honestly have no idea that's Tony Stark sitting at the table with them. Additionally, I can't be the only one thinking Rocket Raccoon looks like a Raccoon vampire, right? You know, not the sparkling kind... the scary kind.

I can't help but feel like Gamora's character is being sold short here. I'm not going to pretend to be an expert on her or anything, but sleeping with Tony after a super short round of flirting felt a bit out of character and it's a bit tough to believe she'd require saving against a guy who she was pretty much wrecking in hand-to-hand. But hey, at least she showed off some skill in the issue, right?

While the plot has been fairly formulaic, Bendis has managed to keep everything moving at a good and entertaining pace. However, this issue seems to slow down the narrative and instead barely hints at a bigger mystery with Gamora. It seemed a bit odd not having a response from the king after Peter's broadcast in the last issue or any real progress with that plot point (aside from a brawl with some random guards).

The Verdict

Yes, Bendis delivers the funnies, a decent action sequence and establishes a new mystery... but pretty much everything else from the previous plot is cast aside for now. Additionally, we have yet to see all that much depth from these characters, yet Tony Stark -- a man who clearly won't be a permanent member of the team -- gets a whole two pages to himself. Sure, they're an amusing set of panels, but I'd much rather see that time dedicated to fleshing out the primary cast of characters.

The only thing I hated was Tony hooking up with Gamora. It doesn't make sense.

I don't think Bendis has ever read a comic with the modern Drax the Destroyer in it. He was completely mis-characterized, to the point that its almost a completely different character.

This. Either he doesn't know or doesn't care.

I've only read DnA's cosmic stuff, and based off those, Gamora's conquest of Tony seems 100% in character. What's not, however, is how poorly she did against the bounty hunter. So far, Bendis seems to be writing Gamora and Drax as weak characters, when they're meant to be anything but. I was really hoping the new character designs would win me over, but they really haven't. As an example, why does Groot have lights on/in him? As usual, Bendis changes things without explaining why.

I know very little about Gamora but seeing her basically have a brief (lame) exchange with Tony and then jumping his bones struck me as kind of terrible. Either she's a shallow person or Bendis is assassinating her, because the most dangerous woman in the galaxy should not have become another Tony Stark conquest so flippantly, if at all.

This has all the hallmarks of a New 52 book, ie. written with lots & lots of corporate oversight. It used to only be superhero movies that took a popular title, altered it beyond recognition, and drained it of its soul. Now it seems that the practice has spread to the actual comic books. If this is the version they're basing the movie on, then it's headed for the DVD bargain bin, right next to the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

I'm so cosmic comic booked out it's not funny. Geoff Johns Green Lantern was pretty much the only cosmic comic I followed, and I've been SCREAMING for a Green Lantern on Earth. I dropped GL Corps because of all the cosmic aliean material. A lot of people over the years have been preaching about how good Guardians has been, and the whole Annihilation stories, and Nova blah blah blah. I tried them, and just didn't get into it. I dropped GL all together (even tho I picked up Red Lanterns and I'm intrigued) and I'm hoping a title with Simon Baz comes out, but only if it keeps him grounded on Earth. What ever. I'm Bendis lover, even tho I hated him just for the sake of hating him. No reason to hate him, I just did. I liked his DD run, and when I descovered Mark Millars Ultimates and fell in love with it, I started buying the Avengers when Bendis changed the team and put Wolverine, Spider-Man, Luke Cage, and Spider-Woman on it. I never jumped on the Avengers because of the history I didn't know about. Comicvine and Wiki weren't around for me to go to and read about the history so it made it easier for me. I ..scratch that...WE can all do that now when ever we decide to jump onto a new title. Anyway. The New Avengers had Iron Man who I knew from cartoons, the Ultimates, and the movie. Captain America I knew from The Ultimates. The only realy change was that The Ultimate Cap killed. Spiderman I knew from cartoons, and from collecting, Luke Cage I knew from some collecting and friends. Spiderwoman I knew from a cartoon, and hadn't seen her since that cartoon so it intrigued me. Wolverine I knew from..........Everything, he's Wolverine. So I jumped onto Avengers and now loved Bendis. I now knew why the Bendis lovers loved Bendis, and why they always said his dialogue was better then anyone. I always thought Frank Miller had the best dialogue, and the Mark Millar after Frank. (the Mark Millar that doesn't swear of course). What ever. I started in comics with X-Men and and have been jumping of and off ever since Grant Morrison started writing them. I might be the only person even out there that hated Morrison on X-Men even the I was easily one of the most excited hearing that he was going to write the X-Men. Morrison on the JLA is the whole reason I ever started buying DC. What ever. Needing my X fix I jumped on Millar Ult. X-Men, and he did so good I jumped on the Ultimates when I saw he wrote that too. From there I jumped onto the Avengers and I've been following Bendis ever since. I jumped Bendis 2 X-Men books, and I'm so happy for it right now, because I finally got my X-Men back, and in good hands. Because of that, and Bendis, I decided to try out Guardians. I used to read GOTG in the 90's when it based in the future with Marvel Boy all grown up in an adamantium suit and walking around with Caps sheild. What ever. I've been on the title starting with the 0 issue. The origin of Star-Lord, and I've been sucked in ever since. I just rambled on for longer then I should have, when all I really wanted to say was "the title is great. if you like GOTG, buy this. if you like Bendis, buy this.

Everybody chill out.... This is a filler book between arcs. Bendis is fine as the writer. It's BENDIS!!! Gamora and Tony hooking up was awesome. Groot drinking 'boat drinks' was awesome too! You guys need to chill. Bendis will lead you down the path of awesome. Just stay on it....

It's only issue 04! It's the MARVEL NOW GOTG. Give it time. It's different from Annihilation for a reason. That's a good thing. I don't want something that's like Annihilation but, not!! That book is a masterpiece. You can't rehash the same shit.

Look, The stuff with Angela will be fleshed out soon too. Just stay positive. If anything that bothers me is the new costumes designs!!! I hate Star Lords new gear. His helmet is wack. He need the re-breather mask and helmet he used to have. Drax doesn't need an Axe. His big knife and energy blaster is all HE needs. Groot with the 'Tap Lights' on his body.... What's up with those?

I'm hoping Bendis leaves this book. He writes enough already and from the first two issues I didn't care for the direction he was going in. I would like to read more of this team's adventures though.

I liked this issue more than the previous 3. It ga e me a better understanding of the groups personality. I LOVE Pichelli's art as well.

Same. This was hands down my favorite issue of the series thus far, alongside issue #0. I found this comic to be much more enjoyable than any of the other previous three. Pichelli's art is also a helping factor. It looks exceptionally good here. I don't remember her pencilling being as good in Ultimate Comics Spider-Man...

That makes 3 of us. I was amazed at Pichelli's art in this issue. I only really know her from the Pixie mini-series, and here it's an order of magnitude better. OK, the plot is a little weak, but I'm still on board for this series.

I was thinking about dropping this title after issue three. I am definitely going to drop it after issue four. I have loved the cosmic line from Giffen's Annihilation through all of DnA's GOTG, Nova, Conquest, and Thanos Imperative stories. These barely resemble the characters that I have grown to love and will not support this title any more. I guess this leaves another slot open to pick up another Valiant title.

I can only hope that this series does not preview how the characters will be portrayed in the GOTG movie.

I have mostly enjoyed this series but this issue was terrible. I don't think Bendis has ever read a comic with the modern Drax the Destroyer in it. He was completely mis-characterized, to the point that its almost a completely different character. Also bendis downplayed gamoras healing factor and skill. Over all I have been satisfied by the series but I think he should study up on some of the cosmic characters. At the very list read the DNA runs

so for the last 3 issues and the brief online comic that told the story of how they reformed bendis has been hinting at a starlord & gamora hooking up only to have her bang iron man?

Bendis even admitted he can't write cosmic books, why is he on this again?
