Guardians of the Galaxy #1

The cosmic team's adventure begins here!

This review contains spoilers.

The Good

I really krutacking like this book and, seeing as I'm a guy that tends to enjoy only a select few cosmic stories (here's looking at you, Green Lantern), that's saying a helluva lot. Writer Brian Michael Bendis is welcoming me to Marvel's cosmic universe with arms wide open. While this isn't as emotionally compelling as the point one issue, it does a fine job introducing us to the team in a delightfully fun manner (though some characters don't shine as much as others). Bendis doesn't dive into these characters as much as DnA did in the previous run's premiere issue, but he still does a thorough job getting their personalities across and already has me wanting more of the team.

The plot moving this book is light so far, but the focus was clearly on giving us the basic rundown of each character and then tossing a whole lot of fun our way. It's not long before the team encounters Tony Stark and a huge battle emerges. The art team here really sells the scene and throws you right into the crazy space action. The panels look great as laser blasts tag aliens, Groot smashes like a tree-boss, and Rocket Raccoon makes use of yet another ridiculously large weapon. Iron Man's introductory panel is nothing short of stellar. I found myself gazing at the planet behind him for at least a solid minute -- everything from the detail on the surface to the atmosphere kept my eyes glued to the page.

The Bad

While Steve McNiven's illustrations makes the book look fantastic, I couldn't help but be distracted by the eyes (most notably in the opening scene between Star-Lord and his father). The shapes and distance between them seemed to fluctuate a fair amount. Certainly a minor complaint, but it did stand out to me.

Another minor complaint, but Drax ditched those awesome blades for some kind of energy axe? I get it goes with the sci-fi theme and can dish out way more damage (not to mention is less violent), but those twin knives increased his badassery so much. This weapon instead gives the impression that he's more of a lumbering brute -- and maybe that's exactly what he is now. I guess we'll see in time. Additionally, I'm not a fan of the excessive use of circles in the new costumes, but what's done is done and the circlefest is here to stay.

It seems safe to assume Stark took his most advanced armor to space, yes? So, how is he taken out by the blast while others around him are a-okay? I understand his shields were just under half, but that's still quite impressive for a dude who has stood up to a nuclear blast before. Different armor, I know, but I imagine Tony would bring something durable on his deep space mission, no?

The Verdict

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY comes out of the gate with an entertaining chapter that's loads of fun and looks exceptional. However, so far the overall narrative is fairly light and has a bit of a bland opening . Regardless, Bendis has managed to make this new reader friendly (even if you haven't read the point one issue) and does a more than able job establishing the basics with each character in an amusing fashion. This issue is definitely worth checking out if you're curious about what is sure to become Marvel's biggest cosmic team. We're off to a very good start, Bendis... now let's dive deep into this story!

I am not feeling this book at all and it feels rushed and thrown together. Iron man trying to get away from it all to go into space and find his fortune and I never knew him and Star-Lord became so close that Tony takes his advice. I cant wait to see how this plays out in Iron mans other books, hopefully he changes his mind and decides to return to earth and leave the GotG all together.. The art work is ok seems to try and copy from the last GotG book matter of fact its seems that a lot of this book try's to copy from that great series but after reading this first issue I can say I have a bad feeling about this one. I think some one needs to tell Bendis that to make a good story it does not always have to be the biggest event the world has ever seen with full page spreads it the subtle things that make up a great story and the interaction with the members of the group that make up the feeling , I know Bendis loves the next big thing but this time I hope he can just give us a good story.

Ill try to stay positive and hope that this book works it self out but don't get your hopes up for for this one maybe number 2 will be better ...

@trevel8182: Yes I think the same but it seems more likely to be explained in the nova series.

This was fun, although contrary to the review I found it to be lighter on characterization than on plot. Obviously this first issue concentrated on Star Lord and Stark, but Drax and Gamora hardly seemed to have any personality of their own--and they both should be fairly complicated characters with deep pasts.

But Bendis, who's work I often enjoy, is not the best at "complicated"...

To anyone looking for the best part of this book, use the Marvel AR app on the double page spread showing the full team, was easily the biggest and best surprise I have had all week!

Maybe I should read this. I think I am mostly done with GL for now.

Are you going to check out Venditti's run when it begins?

I thought this issue was good. I like the set up of this arc. And yes I am one of those fans who will complain about not bringing back Starlord's helmet from Annihilation, but come on, his new helmet sucks. But in all seriousness, I think Bendis will do a good job with this book.

@tommythehitman: .........you do realize that it doesn't take place at the same time as all of those events, right?

That's like saying how can Thor be in Avengers and face off against The Godslayer.

Also,do you guys have trypophobia or something.I don't find the circles that crucial to the story. And they look fairly nice the way they are used.

Being such a HUGE fan of DnA's run, I had very high expectations for this book... and sadly, it didn't live up to them. I'll still give it the obligatory 3 issues to win me over though.

I'm willing to ignore Iron Man in this new version since I love cosmic teams but I'm thinking the plot will be building up slowly to something epic. (which sucks waiting monthly)

It doesn't really make sense of how Iron Man can be halfway across the universe with the Guardians, is able to run his own company in his own title, face off with Ultron in Age of Ultron and Co Lead The Avengers in ... Iron Man's the new Wolverine.

I really hate addressing questions like this as it bothers me that comic book fans accept so many ridiculous things, but then throw real world rules on situations at random. Anyway...

I don't think you've been reading his title. He left Earth quite a few issues ago to explore space. And Pepper runs the company anyway.

...and Age of Ultron is in the near present, so it hasn't actually happened yet in most other titles.

Can we not give ratings to individual issues any more, or am I missing something?

I remember reading a teaser for Secret Invasion saying "how do you think Wolverine is in so many places at one time?" I thought they were going to fix the over saturation of characters after that arc... I guess I was wrong *cough* Iron Man *cough*

For some reason star lord still has the element gun(seen in issue .1) that completely disrupts his continuity. Maybe that is a good thing though, all popular characters have had reboots.

What I really don't like about this series is how it makes earth important. That just seems to be incorporating cosmic marvel into mainstream. Why else would they add iron man? I can understand them trying that with x-men, but one of the big parts of cosmic marvel is how seperate it is from earth.

I just want this comic to be really good and clear all the mess of Starlord and Thanos escaping the cancerverse, and obviously the fate of Richard Rider although I think that´s going to be explained in the new Nova series.

Based on this issue alone, it doesn't look like Bendis is going to dive into Star-Lord's past. Instead, it's "hey, I heard you did this and this, now here's a fresh start for you." I could of course be wrong, but that's the impression I got from this issue.

To be fair, Iron Man left earth in his ongoing two issues ago and it's unclear exactly when Age of Ultron takes place.

@mrpandopool: I might not like the ultimate outcome of what happened in the cancerverse (knowing a bit about comics and Marvel, Richie's probably and sadly dead or evil to make room and push Nino) I would much rather have Bendis write what happened to him he's a far better writer

I'm still not sure if I want to read this - I can't shake the feeling that it's going to crap all over DnA's masterpiece.

Sweeeeeet. I haven't been reading Nova, but considering Gamora and Rocket Raccoon and are showing up there, and here, and Nova's relationship with the Guardians, and all of their relationship with the cancerverse, and the cancerverse apparently being vaguely referenced in the first issue, I should probably start.

I mean not only is he co-leading the Avengers, but he's also in space on trial for AVX incident and he's on another universe's planet with the Illuminati in New Avengers -_-. I just take it as it is =/... weird but i enjoy looking at pretty pictures and stuff 0.0 (except for Land's Iron Man... ughhh)
