Green Lantern Corps #24 - Lights Out, Part Two: Oa's Last Stand

5

Part 2 of 'Lights Out' continues the big action from last week. Hal, John and Kyle are in for the fight of their (and the Corps') lives.

The Good

Say what you will about the numerous crossovers and events we're faced with, Lights Out is firing on all cylinders. With this story, it's great to see it continue straight from the pages of last week's GREEN LANTERN so we don't have to wait a month to see what happens next.

Relic is a being from an older universe. He is determined all the Lanterns are posing a threat to this universe. (Could he be right?) Seeing Hal, John, Kyle and the rest of the Corps (and Carol, of course) fighting together is awesome and a little frightening as you wonder if everyone will survive. With so much destruction and chaos, it's great to see Hal take charge, showing that the decision to appoint him the leader was a good one.

This may only be the second part of the story but Robert Venditti and Van Jensen do not hold back. We've heard the "everything changes" pitch before but they're showing us, yes, there will be repercussions in this arc.

Bernard Chang's art is top notch here. You can see the results as he attacks each page, capturing the big action the story calls for. There is quite a bit going on and he never lets up. Marcelo Maiolo's colors are gorgeous as well. The Lantern books always call for lots of color and we get that without a feeling of over-saturation, sometimes seen in other sci-fi comics.

The Bad

It's an action-packed enjoyable story. The only bad thing is it takes this dire event to bring all these characters together.

The Verdict

Lights Out picks up the crazy action from last week and takes it even further. Venditti, Jansen, Chang and Maiolo are delivering the goods here. This is the type of story that makes you thankful we are in the midst of another crossover. It demands immediate follow up so we don't have to wait to see what happens next. It doesn't look good for the Lanterns but that's what keeps us on the edge of our seats. We've heard about things changing or big repercussions before but this story is promising to do exactly that.

Sounds like an interesting read. I'll need to catch up on this arc before I get to this though.

@tigerex78: this is just part 2. Pick up GL 24 from last week. Also, you can check out this week's Super Massive podcast with Venditti.

HOLY ****. I knew this would be good, but... Wow. I've never had a comic book make me well up with this many feels. Manly tears were welled.

This book has not had level of heart or quality character work for a very, very long time. Congratulations to Mr. Jensen, Mr. Venditti, Mr. Chang, Mr. Maiolo, Mr. Conroy, Mr. Sharpe, and Mr. Idelson for one helluva ride or for the best team book on the shelves right now.

If you're not reading this you should. It's IMMENSELY satisfying. I felt like I got more quality storytelling than I was expecting. It wasn't decompressed or anything.

To all you GLC readers out there, "May your spirits ever wander."

@g_man: I have to question this review's lack of attention to John's leaderhip in this issue. He was the most tactful and commanding presence here--outdoing Relic himself. Otherwise, great review, G-Man!

Definitely a 5/5 issue.

THIS ^^
I feel the exact same way regarding this issue. One thing that worries me is why did the guardians specifically mention Kyle of all lanterns?

The issue is good and all, but don't like the way Hal is written in his own book and this one. Hal Jordan isn't supposed to be written like some random amateur with a ring.

@mrgreenlantern: I think it's because he's a White Lantern and has mastered all emotions--which makes him both unique and the antithesis to everything the old guardians stood for.

He didn't come across as an amateur at all to me. He's the test pilot rogue he's always been. Usually it's been cool since him fighting authority made sense under the old guardians, but his maverick ways may not make the most sense if he IS the leader of the Corps. This maverick attitude was present in the character in every run from his inception to the Johns revival, so it's not new. I think his maverick attitude is the reason he and John will come to blows later this year (along with the fact that Hal sent Guy, John's best friend, to the Red Lanterns).

At least Hal accepted responsibility like a man. Hopefully this experience has reminded him that he's a leader who needs to fight with his head rather than his heart from now on.

That's one of the best things about this new order. The characters are characters again--with real histories and personalities--as opposed to the non-sensical Mary Sues Johns liked to write.

Awesome issue. It answers one of my questions in the fact that the GL Corps will not be able to help Earth during Forever Evil. They need every one on hand to deal with Relic.

I understand what you're saying and you're right, but the problem here isn't about the character's independence in the tasks he successfully accomplished in previous stories. Since the new creative team, Hal gets corrected on by other lanterns on poor decisions that's common sense to any green lantern. When Krona was attempted to destroy the green lantern corps, Hal depended on Kyle (since he's the artist) and instructed him to draw out the characters from the book of the black to revive other members from the emotional spectrum to help along and ordered other lanterns to protect Kyle from Krona. He certainly couldn't do it all on himself. Apparently, I'm not seeing the same (common) logic here.

Don't get me wrong, I am enjoying this arc and the new writers. And it's good to see John playing a higher role in this crossover event compared to the previous events. He hasn't been written this good in decades, since Johns left.

Another Green Lantern crossover that I'm looking forward to reading. I'm glad this crossover is only in 5 issues. When it comes out in trade, I hope it collects the Relic issue with the Lights Out crossover.

@mysoulz: I can see how you would see a regression in his leadership ability, since Johns made him crazy competent in every situation. I chalk that up before to Hal having inside knowledge. He's not the person with inside knowledge here. And by not making him perfect, he has room to grow and other have time to shine in their own way rather than just being the friends Hal bosses around. If the character grows from this, I'll have more respect for him. I really will. My biggest problem with Johns is he called Hal the greatest but never showed that. You could replace John's Hal with any other Lantern written as a Mary Sue and the story would come out the same. Here, Hal is treated like a human character, so if he grows and his personality and decision-making show that he's the greatest, then all is well.

Luke wasn't just called the greatest Jedi as soon as he learned about the force. We saw him prove it on his way to getting there.

I guess my biggest problem was that Johns was all plot which hurt a lot of characters--including his precious. Venditti is writing character before plot, which is great IMO.

I do see your point though and understand it.

@captain13: To be fair, Hal's been often called as the best in the green lantern corps in stories since post COIE (since he's the front and center) before Johns came into the scene in the GL mythos. But I pretty much agreed with everything you mentioned here.

The Green Lantern family of comics have, in my opinion, been lacking for a while. Rise of Third Army and Wrath of the first Lantern were true low points of Geoff Johns' run. I enjoyed Johns' final issue because it sort of served as a homage to the fun ride Johns had given us, wrapping everything nicely in a bow. Apart from that, those stories weren't good. I remember that I enjoyed War of the Green Lanterns, but don't have much memory of the post-Flashpoint stuff up until Rise of the Third Army. Anyway, I just really couldn't get into Venditti's run until this crossover. And what I just can't seem to get behind is this idea that the emotional energy is a finite resource. I thought Johns pretty much established that it was constantly generated by lifeforms throughout the cosmos. However, I thoroughly enjoyed this issue. I realize that Veniditti's main gig is the other title and he and Jensen co-write this one. I hope that Venditti can write this well without his co-writer on his own title. I would also like to add that I do not lump the Giffen and Dematties Larfleeze comic into the pile of not-so-great comics. That one is a really fun read. You know what, the New Guardians book was also really good until the new writer took over.

On a completely unrelated note, as many of you probably realized a long time ago and already forgotten by now, Jim Starlin took over writing duties on Stormwatch with issue #19. Having loved some of his other recent stuff (such as Rann/Thanagar: Holy War) I didn't hesitate to add the series to my pull-list once he took over, as I had complete faith he would make the series remarkable. However, after several sub-par issues, my faith was beyond wavering. However, something motivated me to read this month's issue before any of the other comics I got this week, and though many of its plot points were extremely unoriginal or downright cliche, I actually really enjoyed it and felt it was setting the stage for something amazing and my faith in Starlin is restored. Those of you who like general cosmic stuff, I suggest you check it out.

Also whoever comes up with the best way to differentiate between Geoff Johns and John Stewart when people are saying something along the lines of "John" on this thread is in my opinion, totally the man.

@captain13: Actually, I think it's mainly because he controls the white light, which created the emotional spectrum. They probably need him to recreate it in case it gets destroyed by Relic. Remember that Relic never saw the white light before. I'm not even sure he knows the white light represents life.

And if I good remember, the Life Entity told the other entities that they needed to go to the white lantern. Was he talking about Kyle? Or the White Lantern which is located on Earth?

i completely agree. i can accept a little bit of regression as long as the end result is satisfying and actually sticks.

So if the individual corps lights are being extinguished, wouldn't Kyle cease to be a white lantern, rather a jumble of the remaining colors? Or is it because he's mastered the other 7?

I'm lovin this event and lovin how connected the GL books are, they're like watchin a big show like Game of Thrones with multiple connected story lines happening at the same time. The only thing that threw me off in this issue is how quickly and randomly Stewart was able to change Jordan's mind about who stays to fight. It just didn't feel organic to me, and seemed a little outta character for Hal, but they are limited in how much they can put in a single book and had to get a point across so its whatever.
