Green Lantern #22 - "Green" Lanterns Review

4

Hal Jordan has just been appointed as leader of the Green Lantern Corps. Too bad they're under heavy attack right away. This won't look good on his record.

The Good

Oa is under heavy attack. It almost makes you wonder why this hasn't happened before. Of course it was the presence of the Guardians that would likely prevent others placing a target on their planet.

Robert Venditti has jumped right into this series and isn't making it easy for Hal Jordan or the Green Lantern Corps. He has shown us the dangers and repercussions for those that are selected to become members and the effects when they are whisked away. For some, it's not going to be as great as you would think.

This is a new era for the Corps. Besides the fact that Hal is supposed to be in control, things are a mess. They've gone through a lot recently and things are only going to get worse before they get better.

Billy Tan has his work cut out for him and shines here. We have a bunch of new recruits and multiple threats. Basically there is a lot going here and the frantic action shows in the art.

The Bad

Larfleeze's attack still feels a little out of place. Of course his reasoning makes perfect sense. It just seemed a little out of character for him to try to go to so far to try to achieve his goal.

There was a character that seemed to get ripped apart yet is shown at the end in one piece. Unless I missed something, that confused me a little. Maybe just the legs were torn off?

I guess we're to assume the events/attack at the beginning of issue 21 still hasn't occurred. That must be another attack coming.

The Verdict

The Green Lantern Corps has had a record of usually coming out on top. With Robert Venditti taking over, he's decided to change that. In an interesting change of pace, we're seeing the entire Corps face a deadly battle due to the fact that they've been fighting battle after battle recently. Hal Jordan has been thrown into the fire and trying to lead the Corps and and deal with trying to clean up the mess here. From the looks of things, Venditti isn't finished beating up the Corps. This is definitely an interesting time for everyone involved and I'm almost scared to see what Venditti will throw at them next.

This issue wasn't as strong as last one, Red Lanterns is still by far the better title since the creative change.

You can tell Vendetti still hasn't got a full grasp of the green lantern characters yet also a little tiny gripe the new recruits shoukdnt have had the GLC symbol on yet until after there boot camp, i remember that was a vital step in becoming a green lantern. yet they had it...like I said MINOR GRIPE but I know Vendetti is still getting used to the GL lore. But i am confident he will take it in a bigger direction but i also doubt that he is going to make anything epic..sorry guys...just my opinion, I think eventually they will get someone else to write Green Lantern, Hes not bad on GLC though i enjoyed his stuff on that rather than the main book.

Also somehow i feel like Vendetti isn't really telling the story he wants to tell..I mean throwing Larfleeze in there, that was surley just to promote his new self title. And putting Guy in Red Lanterns is just a way to have his strong fan base read that book(which is good) but still.

I hate DC as apublisher they have been notorious to not let there writters have as much freedom with there characters unless Johns and Didio like you you really arent going far in DC.
I would definitley tell them to get offmy back and SHHHHHUUUUTTTTUUUUPP!!

Im going to make a rant somewhere else but i give this issue a 3.75/5

I loved the part where the one recruit punched Hal in the back of the head with a construct.

Another good issue by Venditti. I like the direction this book is going and the punch in the head was great!

Good review, I liked the issue a lot. I think Venditti has a strong vision for where he is going and continues to show a very strong handle on writing Hal. Can't wait to see what is next. Haven't enjoyed GL this much in a long time.

1. No. I think he's on there for the long haul.

2. Again, no. Venditti probably was just using Larfleeze's attack as a way to justify the new Star Sapphire getting away amongst the confusion.

3. Well, that just came out of nowhere.

Sodam Yat died years ago. Pretty sure that's all still canon.

It was a good issue but didn't like how they downplayed Larfleeze's powers

I feel bad saying this but I've actually dropped all green lantern books post Johns leaving. I got the 1st issue of each book coming out of the creative change and I wasn't feeling it at all so I dropped every GL. I hope eventually GL books get to the level that they were at with Johns but in the history of Lantern, Johns run (since Rebirth) will be known as the greatest run on the character ever. And I find it really really hard imagining someone else taking the book to the same level that he did. I also feel bad for all the GL titles coming on directly after him. It would be like a garage band coming on after the Beatles.

@hortondrawsawho: I understand your point, but for me GL post-Blackest Night under Johns et al. was really lacking. One big event after another with a loss of character development. Not to mention shelving Hal. I really like where things are headed now and feel revived interest in my long time favorite character/book. To each their own, I hope the GL books end up bringing you back in at some point.

@gl2814_1: Also I need to look at it from a financial standpoint. The book is not to my taste anymore and by dropping the book i'm saving 15 bucks a month (at least) that I can put towards other stuff. The ONLY reason why I don't ever read Batman is because if I read one book I usually have to read the family of books associated with said book. And as many of you know theres like 15? Batman books. By reading Batman I'm nearly doubling how much money I spend on books per month. Theres alot of guys who shop at my comic shop who only read Bat Family books because it's such an investment to read it all.

@hortondrawsawho: I hear you. I often am in the same spot with the Superman books. DD is the only marvel book I read anymore, mostly due to $ as well.

It was a fun issue to read, but can some one please tell me what's up Hal's arm in this panel, or is it plastic man disguised as Jordan?
