Green Lantern #17 - Wrath of the First Lantern, Part One: The Puppeteer

4

Wrath of the First Lantern begins here!

The Good

The Third Army has come and gone without leaving much of a scratch on the universe, but it's clear the entire event existed just to lead up to this... Wrath of First Lantern. Before we dive into the story, I need to praise the coloring. The prologue doesn't raise the bar in this regard, but the rest of the issue is a real treat and there's a splash page that's sure to keep your focus occupied for quite some time. The excessive lighting is impressively crisp and radiant. Ranging from Baz's constructs to The First Lantern's amazing design, your pupils are sure to enjoy soaking in this shower of vibrant colors.

This issue is pure setup for Geoff Johns final story in the Green Lantern universe. It should go without saying that he's clearly going out on one helluva bang. This issue primarily dives into the basics of who The First Lantern is, what he wants, and his transparent feelings about the Guardians. From there, the antagonist spends a good chunk of time with Ganthet, and while this might feel like a rehash for longtime readers, it offers some truly dazzling artwork and generates a momentary scene that displays just how powerful this new character is -- I'll avoid details since I'm trying to keep this as spoiler free as possible. I'll just say that the quick scene is really fascinating.

Meanwhile, the segment with Black Hand and Baz provides a nice change of pace from the events going on with the Guardians. Again, this is a very new reader friendly issue because Baz -- just like a new reader -- has no extended knowledge on the villain, so a fair amount of basic information is provided as the two duke it out. Once more, the coloring really sells this scene and Baz's use of the ring looks great.

The Bad

This is a very exposition heavy issue. That's of course to be expected since it's diving into so much history in the GL mythos and kicking off a huge story, but there are a few times where this may feel more forced than a friendly trip down memory lane.

The Verdict

You can't help but feel like all of Johns' work in this huge universe has been building to this one story, and thankfully, this is definitely a very solid start. The final page is huge (not to mention is a guaranteed laugh) and we can already tell the ramifications of The First Lantern's release will be even bigger.

In case you missed the news, Robert Venditti and Billy Tan will take over the title when Johns departs.

Is this storyline a crossover eg part 1 in this book part 2 in another part 3 in another then part 4 back in Green Lantern or each part of the story in Green Lantern and little tie ins in the other books?

@Mucklefluga: From what I understand the story of Green Lantern # 17 does not continue in another book, but The First Lantern's story does.

OK, thanks. I want to buy it, but only if the story is in Green Lantern. I can't afford to buy all the Lantern books.

This is a very exposition heavy issue.

This.

Although I like it and would give it 4/5, it just seemed like First Lantern was trying to fit everything he wanted to say in one word, over and over again.

I think the exposition was needed as not everyone is well-versed with the world of the various Lantern corps. Even for people who do know every detail then this is a nice refresher.

I just...I just wish they would stop with the crossovers as it great to see an epic story told over many books, but too many from unrelated titles having crossovers makes it hard for anyone follow as money does not grow on trees.

I'm very excited for this last storyline but I do feel a little disappointed by the Third Army. I mean, where was it, really? Remember the Sinestro Corps War? I was honestly expecting some Star Wars-esque story/battle/war along those lines with The Third Army and it never happened. Yes, GLC annual was really great but that was it really.

My point is I can't help but feel Johns has rushed though introducing a new GL (Baz), getting rid of (but also not) Hal and Sinestro, introducing the Third Army, overthrowing the Guardians and introducing the First Lantern all in the space of, like, 8 issues. It does all feel very rushed, but that's not to say I haven't loved every second all the same.

Definitely going to be picking up this issue! Finally we won't see "Rise of the Third Army" on the cover anymore and onto the next story arc, which this one led to. Really anxious to read more in depths about Volthoom, The First Lantern. I am also anticipating the arrival of the new casts on board the GREEN LANTERN title and what Billy Tan can deliver to us, coming from a Marvel background.

@Mucklefluga:Green Lantern #17 starts the crossover as the reason for The First Lantern meeting Kyle and Guy is explained in this issue. You can read Green Lantern Corps and Green Lanterns New Guardians in any order

I'm wondering what will happen at the end of this arc? With Volthoom's reality warping powers I'm betting things shift back towards a status quo. Guardians no longer evil, Hal back as Earth's main GL.

@longbowhunter: I hope not. I would like to see the tension between the lanterns and guardians after this arc and how they'll manage Oa and the green lantern corp.

I hope not either. But I've seen the like happen more than once. Big event with little to no consequence. I will say this though. The Baz stuff has been the best GL has been in a while. I'm hoping Johns can keep the ball rolling all the way to the end.

@Mucklefluga: It's looking like this cross over is going to be handled a lot like the Death of the Family crossover where the main story will be in GL, whereas the other books will help at things to the story will not be necessary.

GL, GL Corps, and New Guardians were all pretty strong this week. I was always way more interested in the first lantern the third army, I'm glad he's finally in his own story.

@CrashBang: Really? I thought the third army story really dragged on longer than it needed to but the first lantern shit was badass. I wonder how volthoom wore the american flag but still mentioned that maltus was his home. maybe he relocated when he gained god-hood

I found the gap between GL Corps Annual and GL 17 was slightly confusing. Despite that, this issue was awesome! I want to know more about the First Lantern and cannot wait to see the ramifications of Geoff's last arc.

@k4tzm4n:

Looks like Hal's comin' back right? Not only is he at the end of the issue but he is on the cover of the others. Now the question is "is Hal going to stay on the Green Lantern title", or is he going to come back to the Justice League.
