Green Lantern #0 - The New Normal

5

This is where we get to mee the brand new Green Lantern. Where did he come from and why was he chosen to be a new Lantern? Find out what he's all about.

The Good

Many love the diversity being placed in DC Comics and others feel it's a little forced but the fact is we are getting it. From the very first page, we get a strong feel of who this new character, Baz, is and where he comes from. The first two pages show us what life for an Arab-American is like. It may not fully convey some of the difficulties that have to be faced but hopefully it will open the eyes of those that might not be completely tolerant of differences in our society.

We're getting a new Green Lantern? How come? Isn't this series about Hal Jordan and Sinestro? This is not your typical issue of GREEN LANTERN. When you see who Baz is and what his profession is, you'll wonder what's going on.

This issue does pick up after the events of GREEN LANTERN ANNUAL #1, which puts it at the present. The Guardians of the Universe are determined to do away with all the Lantern Corps yet we're still seeing the birth of a new one.

The events that land Baz to his current predicament serve to further illustrate who he is. He's far from the typical GL candidate and you'll be asking yourself how he could possibly become one. But obviously there is more to him than it seems.

It's a little strange reading this issue knowing what's going to happen. He's going to become a Green Lantern and eventually become part of the new Justice League of America. With the suspicions over the formation of that team, you can't help but start wondering what kind of Lantern is he going to be? Will he be completely on his own or could he possibly be manipulated by others? There is a lot of unknown despite knowing where this path is taking him. He has a bit of a loose cannon feel and that's part of what will make this a very interesting ride.

Doug Mahnke knocks it out of the part once again. He always excels at pouring so much expression in the eyes of the characters. You can see and feel what they're thinking. There's also the way Baz looks in his civilian guise. Baz isn't a regular white comic book dude and it shows. We also see Baz in a place we don't really see often in comics. The everything looks as it plays out really enhances the suspense and heaviness the script requires.

The Bad

It does seem a little weird that this is a 'zero' issue yet it doesn't fit in as an actual issue #0. Because this takes place after the events of the annual and GREEN LANTERN #12, it would make no sense if you read this before GREEN LANTERN #1.

Baz's different ethnicity is great but of course we have to wonder how come all the Lanterns on Earth have been male and living in America? I am absolutely loving Baz so far but can't help but wonder what if a female was chosen instead.

The Verdict

We have a new Green Lantern and it's a great introduction. We've seen many different Green Lanterns on Earth and from different planets. It's might seem easy to simply create a new one but it's not easy to create a really cool one. That's exactly what we have here. Right from the beginning, you get the sense that this is a different type of Lantern. He comes from a different place and not necessarily because of his race. I'm a huge Hal Jordan fan but I am totally okay with Hal being out of the picture so that we can see more of Baz. It might not make sense that this is an issue 0 since it won't fit in sequentially in the series but as an introduction to a new character, Geoff Johns and Doug Mahnke do a spectacular job. There are plenty of other characters missing in the New 52 but as a new character, Baz will definitely earn his spot as another great DC character.

@evilvegeta74: Since most of the GL continuity still happened, I'd say he most probably is still dead. Which story was it now? Where he sacrifices himself in order to turn Daxam's red sun into a yellow sun? Emerald Eclipse, I think

EDIT: Oh, wait. Never mind. I forgot that he didn't actually "die". That was just the last that I read of him.

I really loved this issue. Baz turned out to be a pretty cool character. He's not a badass criminal or something like that, he's just a guy in a desesperate situation in a country were he's certainly not completely welcome. Plus, I'm glad to see that Hal and Sinestro are still out there.

Is this a good jumping on point? I was waiting to collect money to buy the previous trades, but would this just be a better way to jump in and does it explain about the green lantern universe? Also, will the Third Army be one big storyline as in next week, or will it be seperate for each series? Thanks!

1) This issue is a TERRIBLE jumping-on point. As a new reader you'll be lost easily.

2) It doesn't really explain anything about the GL mythos.

3) It looks like the Third Army will be present in all of the GL books and the storylines are probably conected, since previous GL events like Sinestro Corps War and War of the Green Lantern had the same format.

I totally was thinking the exact same thing. I still like Baz and want to learn more, but damn it would be a great story if the new Green Lantern was a female form te Middle East.

I liked this issue but i totally agree with G-Man with the fact that all the Green Lanterns are male and from America. It is a little stupid in my opinion and stereotypical. There should be more european characters or asian in order to attract more readers, in my opinion. I think DC should work a little bit on that. (Also i dont get why there are 5 green lanterns from one planet in the first place)

Despite my not wanting to like the issue I did. Still don't like that there is yet another human GL or that he is pushing Hal out of the book.

I think Baz was awesome in GL #0, and I really dug his personality. He's also not just some greed driven thief. While the fact that he was stealing is wrong, his heart was in the right place. I can't wait to see more of him and where he goes as a hero.

Really solid issue, I'm glad the Arab ethnicity is getting some love in the comics and I was glad they showed how some people in America commonly use the terrorist stereotype with them. To be honest I liked the Annual more tan this but it will be interesting how Baz adapts to the power he now has. Wildcard on the new Justice League team? I think yes. Conflict with Steve Trevor? Yes. Him getting his ass kicked by Martian Manhunter? Maybe.

Still not keen on the gun and mask, but I like Baz. The character has some depth and the story was really entertaining. Hope this new GL doesn't get lost in the big upcoming crossover.

It could also have been an alien. Sector 2814 is not just Earth and before Hal Jordan, all the Lanterns guarding that sector were aliens.

I agree. I'm pretty tired of the human Green Lanterns only getting the spotlight when there are so many alien species in the galaxy that could at least act as a supporting character.

I do like @The Stegman 's idea a lot as well, though.

Really great intro to the new GL. Just imagine if this story was the one a new Green Lantern movie was based on. It would be a bold and exciting choice.

they should have used this issue to clear up inconsistencies between the New 52 and the PreFlashpoint continuities...mostly centered around Kyle Rayner and the fact that Jade and Major Force no longer exist in this reality

@Booster_Bronze: I wouldn't call it forced. Geoff Johns is Lebanese, like Baz, so it comes across more natural.

Reading this issue, all my fears about him being a negative stereotype are more or less quashed. I would only give the issue 4 stars, but I'm liking where this is going

I'm more interested in the agents interviewing Baz. That one guy seemed to have an interesting backstory (the one connected to Waller) and I bet we'll be seeing more of him. As for Baz himself, call me pessimistic, but I just see this as DC checking another minority off their "to be made into major characters" list. I'm not saying an Arab wouldn't make a good hero, just that it feels kind of forced. Up next in the checklist: An Eskimo (Inuit), an Aboriginee, and a Luxembourgian.

Agreed. Didnt DC say they didnt want anymore duplicate heroes? Just feel he is kinda pointless. Why not use one of the other GL characters for the new JLA book.

But I really did enjoy the issue and cant wait to see what happens in this cross over.

@evilvegeta74: he'll return later in the series, remember he escaped with Zardor in Emerald Warriors, before the 'War of the Green Lanterns' happened. he might be a bad guy now..im not sure. we will soon find out in Green Lantern Corps book though since his relationship is more toward those characters.

Why does DC keep getting rid of Hal! Hes one of my favorite characters. I have yet to read this issue, but I wonder how it will effect the Justice League book since Baz is going to be in the JLA book. Hopefully Hal comes back after this arc.

Sex change incoming.

Imagine Baz going through SRS, then a complete surgery (hence the burqa costume), then (s)he turns out to be a lesbian.

I haven't read this issue, but within the context of the current story, it makes sense that it's another American. Sinestro and Hal were in that graveyard in the Annual, the ring is gonna search for the nearest person with a high amount of willpower. It definitely would be nice to have a non-American GL though, yeah. There is a British Red Lantern...

SO sosososo sick of people complaing just to complain, there are plenty of female characters in the green lantern verse (arisa, natu, jade, fatalty and carol ferris A HUMAN FEMALE who was/is/will be soon again a star shappire, then all the star shappires are female) if they got just new human female to be a simple green lantern that would just be boring at this point in comparison to the other female characters.

giving a female muslium woman the green lantern ring instead of the male, would have been good, but if they really had her going against her religion and ethnic traditions (regardless of how sexist and unjust they are) that would be a quick way for DC to start a serious shit storm in the real world :/

I didn't like Guy's jacket at first... so I guess the mask and gun will grow on me.

And, yes it is time for a female earthling to get a ring.

Oh, maybe DC could give a ring to a Japanese school girl (school uniform included) and she can build giant robot suits for her to wear and huge green samurai swords!

Like that hasn't been done to death.
