Green Arrow #30 - The Outsiders War, Book 5: Family Review

4

The Outsiders War continues and things get pretty wild. Oh yeah, how the heck is Ollie going to recover from last issue?

The Good

It's almost as if with each issue, Jeff Lemire, Andrea Sorrentino and Marcelo Maiolo are cranking up the action and insanity. It's almost as if this isn't just a regular Green Arrow comic anymore. With the Outsiders War underway, there are many players on the field. Sorrentino has his hands full, or at least his one drawing hand, putting all the action on each page. And he doesn't skip a beat.

Lemire has raised Green Arrow to a new level. His backstory continues to get amped up. We're seeing new developments as his origin and mythos gets expanded. The story keeps building up and you have to wonder what can happen after this arc.

Each month I'm simply in awe of the art and colors. It practically takes you to another place. It has such a surreal feel and, honestly, I wasn't sure how Sorrentino's style would fit with Green Arrow after I, VAMPIRE. I don't even want to think about reading a Green Arrow story without Sorrentino.

The Bad

The downside of so many characters and twists is it's almost feeling a little overwhelming. This has gone beyond being just a Green Arrow comic. The recent revelation of a certain character's return and the events with this issue left me a little uneasy. It makes sense that this would have to be the direction for this character but almost feels like a tease. The solution to last issue's cliffhanger felt like a tease as well.

The Verdict

If you haven't been reading GREEN ARROW lately, you have no idea what you're missing. Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino are taking the character and series to new levels. There is a lot going on in this arc along with a lot of characters. While this particular installment in the arc doesn't push the story forward too much, we still have a lot of insanity to enjoy. GREEN ARROW isn't just a good comic. It's a GREAT comic.

I think that the other clans should be elaborated on more.

(And where's Gregg?)

@xwraith: Gregg's not the only one that reviews comics around here.

Magus really has me intrigued and I want to know more about the Outsiders.

Love the art as usual, as for another shocking ending, I don't know understand why introduce Oliver's dad and then kill him off soon after that??

So Katana on Green Arrow?

Soon... Black Canary maybe will get a shot with the Emerald Archer

@g_man: I'm well aware, but I've never seen a Green Arrow review that wasn't by him.

This should have been 5 stars. It was amazing.

@cheesesticks: why not write and post your own review? We're all entitled to our own opinions.

@xwraith: I've reviewed some before if you look back.

@batsymyplaything: my thoughts exactly.

Wow...Magus is awesome. I really dug this issue. The gang is all here. One of my favorite things about Green Arrow pre New 52 was having Ollie, Dinah, Mia, Connor and Roy together. The Arrow Family as it were. I like seeing that approach taken here. Different cast, same result. Oh and Count Vertigo made an appearance.

As always.....I LOVED THIS ISSUE. Katana being there surprised me, I guess this means she has a definite spot on the hopefully upcoming soon team Green Arrow and The Outsiders!

@jonny_anonymous: It's really not humorous when we get people tell us week after week that our opinions are wrong. I'd much rather people try to put some effort into writing their actual reviews on the site (anyone can post a user review) rather than try to be a comedian. My job is to read and dissect the comics. If Gregg or anyone else feels all Green Arrow issues are 5's, that's great for them. It's good to have comics that make you happy. But we all have our own opinions. Some just can't comprehend that.

I think he realises that, I'm pretty sure he was making a joke.

Was I supposed to know about about the mask weapon? Did they mention it before?
