Green Arrow #18 - The Kill Machine, Part 2

5

Mystery, action and suspense -- exactly what you'd want in a comic. You'll be happy to be reading a GREEN ARROW comic.

The Good

Green Arrow is a character I've always liked. He wasn't necessarily one of my top fav's but I enjoyed whenever he appeared. With Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino taking over the title, we see we're on the verge of something spectacular. This is exactly how the series should have begun in 2011.

Things have been a little shaky for the character but now we're getting a better idea who he is and what he's fully capable of. It's no wonder the Justice League didn't take him seriously when he tried joining in JUSTICE LEAGUE #8.

If you have been reading or keeping up with this series, everything you knew before has been turned on its side. That's a good thing. The new direction isn't ignoring or erasing what happened before but has made the series accessible to both current and new readers to the comic. Oliver Queen is now in a bad situation. He's finding out secrets from his and his family's past. The mix of trying to get to the bottom of the mystery while also being hunted on two fronts jacks up the intensity of the story.

I mentioned it before, I wasn't sure how Andrea Sorrentino's art would fit on this title. I loved it on I, VAMPIRE and it turns out he adds the perfect touch to Lemire's story. There is a certain vibe brought to the atmosphere, much like Sorrentino did in I, VAMPIRE. Seeing how the action plays out with the focus to certain parts in panels is a great change of pace from what we see in most other comics.

I had some concerns over the direction of the story and the mystery but as we find out more, it becomes more intriguing. The mention of Steve Trevor and the Justice League of America is a great nod to the continuity in the New 52 universe.

The Bad

Is it possible for there to be such a huge mystery about his family unknown to Ollie? It doesn't really matter. What matters is I'm having fun reading a Green Arrow comic once again.

The Verdict

Great ready for more mystery and excitement. Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino continue to to elevate the status of GREEN ARROW. This is what we should have seen from the beginning. We are now seeing what Green Arrow is capable of. This is the type of character he should be. The tiny details of the Justice League and even Roy Harper are just enough to let us know this series exists along side the other New 52 comics. Sorrentino's art is great for Lemire's story and getting tiny details about the mystery continue to drive the story forward full steam. I can't remember the last time I said it but I cannot wait for the next issue of GREEN ARROW.
