Godzilla

4

Godzilla is back. It's time to get to know him all over again.

I may not have been the absolute biggest Godzilla fan around but I've probably seen every movie. I couldn't tell you what the very first Godzilla movie I saw was but whenever a Godzilla movie (or other rubber suit monster) was on during a Saturday afternoon, I was there watching with my brother. I even watched that animated series from long ago with the god-awful Godzooky (if you don't know what or who that is, please, don't look it up). When word came out there would be a reboot on the big screen, I did my best not to have any expectations, positive or negative. We've seen many slick and glossy remake of things from our childhood that simply aren't made for us but rather the new generation. Special effects are often given a higher priority than retaining the true essence of the original source material.

The nice thing about this remake is, it's actually pretty good.

No Caption Provided

The filmmakers do a good job in introducing new viewers to who Godzilla is. His origin isn't what you might immediately think and that adds a slightly different twist. Having the movie start out fifteen years ago allows us to see Bryan Cranston and Aaron Taylor-Johnson's character (as a kid). This gives us a human connection to the story that will interweave between the moments of chaos.

Yes, there is a story.

Instead of focusing simply on monster fights and destruction, we get a slightly slow build. Some may demand to see Godzilla stomping around right away but, if you think about it, that could get old right quickly. We need the human connection in order to care about this movie world. At first I even questioned why we would see events leading to some destruction only to have the movie cut away to the aftermath. It felt a little cheap but it did leave you in suspense for the big climactic ending.

No Caption Provided

As for the human aspect, as important as it is, it's not what you'll take away from the movie. At the center is Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen. Taylor-Johnson does a fine job in his role but it becomes a little tiresome when he manages to be pretty much everywhere something big or crucial is happening. What felt a little odd was Ken Watanabe's role. He was the Godzilla expert. He brought the science into the movie. But he was also the one that seemed to be in shock during most of the movie.

The movie also goes out of its way to include a few big cities. Who doesn't want to see their city involved in a Godzilla movie? Seeing the movie in San Francisco, you could hear people perk up, chuckle, and start whispering when the city was first mentioned. It's just too bad many of the big landmarks clearly were not actually filmed in the city.

These things are insignificant. People aren't going to a Godzilla movie for the human actors or the detail to the cities that get ravaged. It's all about Godzilla, monster fights, and detailed destruction. That is what you'll get here. There is a story. There is a reason for the destruction. It's not just a shiny glossy movie with giant action scenes. It's a Godzilla movie, pretty much exactly like you want to see. And if hearing Godzilla's first big roar doesn't bring a big old smile to your face, then it's time for you to get to know the true glory of Godzilla.

I absolutely loved this movie! I saw it twice already and it isn't enough! The M.U.T.O. designs were brilliant, although I too will acknowledge that the creators definitely borrowed features from the Cloverfield monster and Orga. But, there's nothing wrong with that. In fact, I would rate the M.U.T.O. among my favorite Kaiju. At some points, I felt like I wasn't really watching a Godzilla movie. But, that too, isn't necessarily a bad thing; that just means the movie took me to a place I wasn't expecting and ultimately, that's why we go see movies in the first place, right? I can't wait to see this again and I'm looking forward to a sequel!

I enjoyed imagining the monsters with anime samurai-type voices ("Come and face me, Muto." "So, the mighty king has come to reclaim his throne?")

I also loved at the end, where everyone was cheering for Godzilla, recognizing him as their savior.

I felt so bad for godzilla during the golden gate bridge scene, like wtf, he wasn't doing anything but helping you. Anyway i really liked the movie, the one thing that would have made it better would be like the only way for humans/godzilla to win would be to work together. Like the flying monster being on godzilla's back while the big one was coming and then a barrage of missiles nails the flying monster in time for godzilla to block the attack.

I originally didn't plan on seeing this, but hearing how much everyone loved it made me change my mind.

... I haven't had this much fun in a movie theater since I saw The Avengers for the first time.

Disappointing movie but not too bad as some people try to make. The human relationship treatment was pretty weak, some of the main characters actually become pretty insignificant to the plot, cutting a Godzilla fight to the aftermath is ok but when it's done multiple times, it becomes totally infuriating.

I actually like the human segments of the movie, I wouldn't have minded seeing more of Godzilla, and the teasing was a little annoying at times. But overall I thought it was a good movie and when we were finally able to see Godzilla cut lose, it was impressive.

Saying that it would be too expensive to put more Godzilla scenes in this movie or that it would even make the movie worse is ridiculous. Pacific Rim had WAY more fight scenes in it, and look how well THAT movie did. Look how GOOD that movie was. Not only did it have a lot more fighting in it, but it was perfectly spaced out. One at the beginning, one in the middle (the best IMO), and one at the end. It also had bo staff fighting, a fist fight, a monster battle in a flashback, and a monster battle in Australia and then on TV to keep you entertained between the first two monster battles. What did Godzilla have? You get to follow the exploits of a boring, generic, personality-less military hero for almost the entire movie so you can see a cool fight scene for ten minutes at the end. It teases you the entire movie and then gives little to satisfy you.

4 stars from me. Everyone bashing the movie for not having enough Godzilla is being stupid. 2 hours of monsters would have got overwhelming and tiresome, not to mention the fact that having them on screen for that long would have been almost impossible, financially. Effects that good do not come cheap. And the effects were amazing, genuinely jaw-dropping (literally at one point for me), with the final 20 minutes being the best possible payoff to the rest of the film (nuclear fire down the throat may prove to be 2014's best death sequence). I also found the human drama to be a cut above most blockbusters, especially when Bryan Cranston was on screen and even when the MUTOs and Godzilla weren't stomping about, the visuals were still great. There were some cliched bits, like the Golden Gate Bridge getting destroyed yet again and the dialogue was a bit naff at points (pretty cringey stuff when someone said 'relax, it's not the end of the world'), but overall it was very well constructed and holy crap did the King himself deliver when he was on screen.

@plogty: It's refreshing to see that I'm not the only one with this opinion. I personally bought a ticket to see the big guy cause some chaos, but one of my huge gripes was with another tasteless tactic that Hollywood did. Those who went to see the film because of Bryan Cranston got the pointy end of the shaft without lubrication. Talk about cameo's, Cranston was in it just about the same length as Godzilla. And that's just wrong.

Don't even get me started on the idiotic military that used weapons that did more harm than good against the monsters.

A 3 star movie for me

First 10 & final 20 minutes were excellent but the 90's minutes in between were horrendous, I don't mind Godzilla sightings being kept to a minimum but at least give us some good characters to keep the film going like Jaws, Alien, Super 8 & Cloverfield did, The human characters were DULL except for Bryan Cranston's character but sadly they killed him off way too early.

They could have cut around 20 minutes to keep the pace steady as I felt the 2hr length dragged

Special F-X were great though Godzilla looked awesome as did the MUTO's.

I'd recommend a theater screening just for the final 20 minutes as IMO the home release wouldn't do it justice but be warned it's pretty boring till then.

Overall very disappointing

@those_eyes: when they finally got to it. He had the least amount of screen time. People complained that transformers focused too much on the humans...well what was this then? and even during that fight he took punches until he finally got fed up. the describe him as this godly force of nature...godzilla went out of his way to avoid harming humans, he actually stopped moving one point because they were in his way, he took bullets to the face, actually saved the bridge at one point. The whole movie I could imagine him saying "okay guys cut it out really....could you just not...okay yeah knock that shit off it's getting old" they followed him with their fleet for a quarter of the movie. It was a game of cat mouse and bird.

Imo it was an almost perfect movie. I do understand your complaint about the lack of screen time but imo it was well done teasing him. Aswell it has done over 90 million already so I'm sure there will be a sequel which I'm sure will focus more on Godzilla and him fighting.

@silverpool: Yes. I would have preferred 2 hours of senseless fighting over 10 minutes after having waited through boring, cliche human drama almost the entire movie.

This movie was fucking epic. The pacing was terrific. And Godzilla was actually in it far more than I expected him to be. And the cinematography was just beautiful. This movie has some of the most beautiful shots I have ever seen in my life. There wasn't a single scene that had Godzilla in it that I didn't like. This movie felt very Spielbergish. This was a truly great genre film. It puts transformers and pacific rim to shame. Go watch this movie, you will not be disappointed.

I just wanna say real quick that there is some really intense scenes. Like the first time we see Godzilla, the way that they reveal him is amazing. And then when he's about to face off against the female muto in SF he gives us the greatest roar in all of cinematic history.

I just got back from watching it myself. Though I'm glad the movie has drummed up interest in series I was not pleased with the film itself. This was one of those movies I should have waited for on video so I could have fast-forwarded to the good parts. 2.5/5.

This movie wasn't that great. Yes, when Godzilla showed up and did his stuff, it was AMAZING, but how often was that? Not often. You have to get through so much boring, cliche, generic bull**** before you get to see that stuff. Godzilla was doing cool stuff for maybe 10% of the entire movie. I didn't go to see this movie to see the humans do whatever. I went to see Godzilla f*** sh** up. Even if the story and characters were amazing, I don't care. I still didn't go to see them. But the movie didn't even have that. The story and characters were boring, generic, and cliche. Cliche crazy guy no one believes. His generic military good guy son and his obligatory family. Cliche scientist who knows what's really going on but who the military doesn't listen to until the end. And cliche military who try to stop what's happening but fail because they weren't listening to the scientist. And it's aggravating, because throughout the whole movie you think you're about to see Godzilla do something awesome, and then it cuts to another scene. You have to wait until the very end to get to the good stuff. And even during that it's constantly cutting to what the humans are doing. This didn't feel like a monster movie to me. It felt like a disaster film that happened to have monsters in it. A Godzilla movie with little of Godzilla in it. Ugh. Just so aggravating.

Honestly, this movie was pretty terrible. Yes, there was a "story," but it wasn't worth telling. It included a lot of military cliches that didn't really contribute to any necessary component of the plot. Godzilla's scenes were great, but they lasted for... what, ten minutes? True, an entire movie of destruction would have been tiring, but I expected more of Godzilla in his own movie.

Loved it, and I'm happy they didn't turn the movie into a 2 hours slugfest, the last 30 minutes was beyond awesome, I also liked Bryan Cranston and Ken Watanbe's characters, it would'v been better if they led the movie instead of ATJ, Olsen is hot but pretty much an unnecessary addition.

Just got back saw it at a drive in theatre which was a cool experience would like to see it in a theatre for better sound. Would give it 3-4 out of 5, I am very Godzilla fan boyish also so. Anybody else catch the Mothra reference on the side of that fish tank looking thing when they went back to the old house ?

Seen it opening night too and really liked it. But it probably had something to do with the movie ending on an awesome battle

I came into it knowing only the basic knowledge of Godzilla; so them putting in a backstory of Godzilla and the other monster was pretty cool.

I believe originally GZ was made from the atomic bomb but now they are saying he is from the age of dinosaurs ? Same with the ...... I forgot what the other monsters name was. I'll definitely have to watch the DVD again to catch more info

And I was one of those people who applauded with the atomic breath and when he finished the last monster. Pretty cool

I was a huge Godzilla fan growing up, and I was highly disappointed with this movie. It lacked everything that made the 1954 powerful and resonant to this day. It also completely lacked what made the sequels fun. It is an extremely dull and boring film, with about 5-10 minutes of Godzilla screen time. For most of the movie, whenever you think the good stuff is about to happen, it cuts away back to the human characters. I will say that it is better than the 1998 Godzilla movie, but that is mainly because at least Godzilla himself was more faithful to the Toho movies.

4/5 for me! I felt it had a good story, great cast, amazing cgi, music was also good, etc.. I didn't mind that the film kept teasing us with Godzilla, it just added to the suspense. Lets be honest if it was just Godzilla fighting the whole film it wouldn't have been great, the story worked well I thought. Big monsters fight slow, imagine them doing that for a good hour of a two hour film!

The final fight scene was just epic, best monster fight scene ever!!! I clinched my armrest when I saw Godzilla for the first time, and when I saw Godzilla's tail to light up for his atomic breath, epic indeed. By the time Godzilla killed the second MUTO with his atomic breath I was literally on the edge of my seat. I can not wait for the sequel, all hail the king of monsters! I loved that ending. "Godzilla; Monster or Hero?" something like that...
