Frankenstein, Agent of S.H.A.D.E. #2 - War of the Monsters, Part 2: The Dissection of Nina Mazursky

2

Frank and the Boys get to the bottom of a demon-infested town, and Ray Palmer continues to be kick back and do nothing. Stick to Hellboy.

The Good

I feel that this book is much better than the first issue. After a certain aside from one of the characters, it's like the second half of the book is much improved from the first. It descends into very "Hellboy"-ish territory, but I'm not sure if it's an homage or something that skirts the line a little too close.

That aside was done very well, and establishes some mental instability that the character sorely needed. A female Abe Sapien is not a character description anyone wants: making her a little bit loco makes her interesting.

The Bad

I still think that some of the Creature Commandos are a little too one-dimensional, and Father Time's guise as a little girl is just for the "edgy" factor; so far there hasn't been any practical reason for the form, and it just seems to break up some visual monotony. While I can applaud the writer and artist's choice for that, I still don't like weird things for no reason.

Ray Palmer has been reduced to the Creature Commandos' "guy back at base", which I think it a great disservice to the character.

Also, certain characters did jack in this issue besides slicing a few monsters and shunting the attention back to Frankenstein; we know who he is, so give us some development!

At this point, the Commandos seem quite powerful, clearing out a village of demons; this seems like a problem, considering three of their members are relatively flimsy and have little-to-no combat training. I'm having a hard time taking them seriously and actually thinking the characters are at risk if they're thrown into overwhelming situations and coming out unscathed.

The Verdict

I can see this book filling a void between the long production cycles of Hellboy and BRPD, but it doesn't approach the level of writing or structure. The "black humour" that's supposed to be present isn't exactly striking any chords with me, and since it's said to be the selling point of the book, I'm less than impressed.

With the addition of a new character next issue, I'm hoping we get a little more spark in the lineup; as it stands right now, I'm having a hard time caring for them, and in turn, paying for this book.

Yeah..... I really want to like this book but it doesn't work for me. I think it could get better after a new arc after everything is getting set up.

Wow you are freaking insane! You say that this issue is better than the first issue yet you give it a lower score!?!?

@noj: The story was better, but the excuses of a "first issue" (warming-up, lack of space, "origin") can't be applied to the second issue.

I found that the character issues were a lot more pronounced, and my "3 stars for a mediocre book" system really didn't apply here.

Maybe I am a little insane. Good catch.

Again, explain to me how Father Time being a little girl is 'edgy.' It's not like he's going around slicing people up or implying anything even remotely close to sexual. I don't see anything remotely 'edgy' about it. It's just different, throws people off, and is funny.

I can see why you don't like that the fact that Father Time is trying to be edgy and it is impractical, but I agree that the form he chooses is cute and kinda funny, but saying that it is impractical compared to being an old man, I would think being a child would be much more pratcical than a withered old man which I assume he would be other wise and it's no like they are gonna have a completely normal looking person in this cast

I personally enjoyed it but I can see why some people may not be a fan. There are better books out there to spend money on so if someone was strapped for cash they may not want to spend it on this title. I still believe though that if your in to the whole "creature commando" thing, its definitely worth a look.

Really disagree with this review, this was for sure my most enjoyed title of the week and is a huge change of pace from everything else I read, BUT to each his own! All I would say is that I enjoy this series, it is something unique imo and makes me chuckle. I mean how many series are going to let a character take an enemies brain and put it in a machine to project its thoughts lol this series is a classic B movie to me, and I am LOVING it

Does this Matt guy get the Lemire books for review since they are both from Toronto?  It really seems he doesn't like many of Lemire's books.  I love Lemire's work and have never given him a 2.

Well that's because it'snot trying to be. Well opinions are opinions and each man'll have his chance on the site to say his piece. Personally I loved this issue and this series. And I especially liked the character focus and development Nina got this issue, but eh. To each his own. Other than on the most surface level do I even understand the comparisons to Hellboy.

really liked it, and it's nice getting some backstory on of the creature commandos (since I'm not familiar with them). The only i could complain about is the art but that's more me not preferring it then it being just bad and I'm sure I'll probably get used to it (maybe even liking it).

Also the cover is pretty damn awesome. I might not like his art on Final Crisis but J.G. Jones really knows how to catch someone's interest with his covers.

Looked like a good premise....

Oh well, it might work better in a collected tpb. Anyway, that's how I was planning to read most of "The New 52" anyways :P

This was a FINE BOOK, 3/5 at least. I think it's going to be one that surprises by getting better over time and not worse (as is likely to happen with a lot of the new 52). The creature commandos are rad and am looking forward to seeing them develop more as characters, which isn't going to happen in two issues! I mean, there's only so many pages in the book! Looking forward to the next one.

I strongly disagree with this review. To me, this second issue was good, a really fun issue, it wasn't AMAZING but it sure kept me entertained and wanting for more. One of my favourites of this week. Also, I'm really digging Khalis. I just love mummies. Specially the ones that look badass, wear a "nemes" similar to the one in Tutankhamun's mask, and don't look like half-naked, rotten corpses.

Seems like a cool book! Interesting characters/concept but i'm sad Ray Palmer is in it. He belongs with the JLA, even if he's not the Atom. He's too mainstream to demote to this C-level book...

Matt Demers is a visionary in the realm of criticism - who else has had the balls to stand up and say "Yeah I liked this issue better, but gave it a lower rating! Don't you see ratings are completely arbitrary? It's a miracle any of you take me seriously! But yet you do! I have no idea what the fuck I'm talking about! Suckers!"?

He's like the anti-critic. You should pay attention - he's rewriting the rules.

This is nuts. Franky has been one of the top books of the New 52 and the second issue was def. an improvement on the already great first.
