Forever Evil #7 - Crisis of Self

3

After a long delay, the finale of FOREVER EVIL is here.

The Good

FOREVER EVIL #7 does plenty of things well, even though there was a delay between this and the last issue. It provides a fun, action-packed issue that leaves readers in suspense. Sure, by the end of the issue, you're pretty sure everything is going to go back to normal, or some relative form of normal, but there's twists and turns along the way to keep the reader interested and invested in the future of DC, including that insane final page.

The book is very Lex Luthor-centric and almost feels like a jumping off point for that character to have his own book. Luthor is extremely fleshed out here through his actions and the narrative driven by his inner-monologue. As long as you have this in your mind, going in, the book moves much smoother and there's no room for confusion.

As far as fanboyism go, there's a TON of stuff to be excited over. First and foremost, it's the first appearance of Ted Kord, who is wearing a very familiar shirt. This leads to many possibilities in the future, including the return of Blue & Gold. That would be pretty dang awesome. The final page marks the return of another character who could lead the DCU into a Crisis. Finally, Luthor knows who Batman is. Again, this has tons of possibilities in the future and could make for some very interesting storytelling.

The art through this book is just as you'd expect: great to look at and tells the story well, visually. Artist David Finch, inker Richard Friend, and colorist Sonia Oback do a fine job at keeping each panel easy to read, clear, and great to look at. Friend's inks are light and not over-powering, and he gets some great depth and texture in things like capes and faces. Finch normally puts out some great work and this is more of the same. He puts out some great art here.

The Bad

FOREVER EVIL has done a fantastic job at shifting who Captain Cold is, along with some other villains, and by the end of this, everything just goes to normal for them. The idea that these "villains" came together to save the world was a really moving part of this story, but after all is said and done, they just go back to being criminals, especially Captain Cold? (A villain with a code or law who could easily become a hero) It seems like all that there was a lot of build-up and great character development with these guys that ultimately gets thrown away, except for Lex Luthor.

This book really should be called LEX LUTHOR because that's who Johns chose to revolve this book around, and that's fine, but in doing so, he makes other characters look like chumps, which is very out of character for said characters.... mainly Batman. He pick-pockets Batman during the issue. It's a small, but unbelievable point.

Dick says "where?" when Owlman is telling Dick he's not giving up on being a team. It makes no sense. This happens towards the beginning of the issue and is NEVER tied up. Considering that Dick being kidnapped and demasked was a MAJOR part of this storyline, you'd think their would be more closure with this, right?

This next paragraph has no barring on the final rating of the book. Because of the long delay for this issue and because a few books are already in post-FE mode, there were a lot of spoilers for readers, like Lex Luthor being a part of the Justice League, and solicits spoiling what happens to Dick Grayson. There are plenty of surprises aside from that, so don't worry.

The Verdict

There's a lot about FOREVER EVIL that was disappointing, even within this delayed issue, but all-in-all, FOREVER EVIL #7 delivers an action-packed, fun issue that does a fine job at telling an over-arcing story. It's a really fun book that will get readers excited about the future of the DCU, but you cannot forget the fact that it leaves loose ends dangling in the wind, especially Dick Grayson. The art is fantastic and the Luthor-driven narrative is well written, but it feels like there's a lot of spite in the writing towards the Bat-characters of the DC Universe. Overall, I recommend this issue though. It is a very fun book with some big problems.

Totally agree with the analysis that this issue (as well as the issue before) is very Luthor-centered ... a bit too much in my opinion, because Batman comes out as some jerk played easily. While its ok that Lex and Bruce can match each other in terms of technological and strategical genius (Lex more technological, Bruce more strategical), its totally out of character that Bruce acts so predictable and playable and Lex knows so much about Batman.

By the way: its a thrilling story, well written and I really loved some moments (best: Cold taking Quicks leg), BUT its not very original - since its an unashamed step-by-step rip-off of Marvel: 1- conspiracy (skrulls = secret society) - 2 - world devasting invasion (Secret Invasion/Skrulls = Forever Evil/ Crime Syndicate) - 3 - villain glory (Osborn = Luthor) - 4 - dark reign (Osborn takes over Stark technology and Avengers = Luthor plays Batman and lets see how it follows with the League?).

Dick says "where?" when Owlman is telling Dick he's not giving up on being a team

Dick wasn't saying "Where?" as a response to Owlman he was saying "Where?" as In Where Is He Because in the two panels Owl Man was dropping Smoke Bombs

FINALLY read it. Even though some plots were spoiled by the delay or still had lots of cool moments

I like when Luthor saves everybody. Kind of what happened in Supes: red son

I find it kind of weird that AM is saying he cant beat DS. But I like how he is not a Galactus size character. I'm intrigued who the last character talking was but if I had to pick one bad thing, I don't like the AMs look

@blackhawk000111: Were they really heat of the moment type of things? As I remember them, Jason and Damian were basically separated from Batman who was racing to them and was already too late. If not, I would say the Jason and Damian deaths were the mistake, not here.

@blackhawk000111: The one thing everyone always says is the best thing about Batman is he is human. Not an alien or robot or some other super-being. The biggest trait of being a human though is not being perfect. I like that the possible loss of Dick Grayson had that effect on him that his judgment was clouded.

How is this a 3 star issue? It resolves all of the major plot lines, completely justifies why Luthor is turning over a new leaf and gives us the next year's worth of plot threads all in one issue.

It was not perfect but it was also not an average issue.

@papinacho: Why do you love that unrealistic relationship. The dude even just told freaking "CATWOMAN" that he does not want a relationship.

Catwoman and Batman and Talia and Batman are far more unrealistic relationships. Frankly they also bore me. I can see why if forced to constantly choose between one of them, the writers keep him single. At least Silver St. Cloud made sense. To make a long story short thought, I enjoy Batman and Wonder Woman's interactions and I think they play off well of each other.

Can't believe frigging Atomica got stepped on. I mean, is it just me? Am I the only person who really liked that character from the moment they first showed up? And on top of that, while I get bad things happening to bad people, why would anyone create a character just so they could have them killed off in an embarrassing and gruesome manner, not to mention adding to the list of Women In Refrigerators? Seriously, Geoff Johns, I like you and all, but that was just messed up. :(

I would pay so much money for this as a monthly series...

"Yo Sinestro, JL is giving me shit and making it hard to rule Kandaq" "BE RIGHT THERE BRO" [chaos ensues]

"Yo Adam, my old corps enslaved my planet" "BE RIGHT THERE BRO" [chaos ensues]

So now the anitmoniter is going to go to war with darkseid, superwoman is having a child which if I recall correctly will be Alexander Luther jr. So are they building up another crisis on infinite earths? Because I really hope not. And I'm still confused on how this event even started, if the box was from earth 3 how in the hell did pandora open is years ago? What's her connections to this at all? There's a lot of holes in this story, and its kind of hard to ignore the inconsistencies. Vibe and element woman are just gone and everybody's like ok, let's move on? If owlman was just trying to help dick, why they fight? Just for dramatic effect before he disappears off into the sun set?

@mossuperman: Proving you wrong? I already did. Geoff Johns already stated it wouldn't last.

And he'll be writting the next Superman's comics.

To be honest, Scott Lobdell didn't do that bad. His run was good and I enjoyed it.

So your point is that Lois and Clark is a repetitive relationship? So I guess every character of DC should change as well...

A classic is a classic. Lois Lane was always what made him human.

Massive faults, unresolved plot lines, under developed characters, misused characters, predictable plot twists and more but I still enjoyed it a lot for some reason,it's probably the first comic from Johns in years that had hooked i from the start till the end.

Sh-she won't. Clark and Diana forever

A very wise man once said "First you get the money, then you get the power, then you get the women". Bruce is simply skipping a few steps since Clark has neither money nor power.

Something scott lobdell wrote is your way of proving me wrong? He wrote Clark like a total douchebag.

Take a look at snyder's superman unchained were they haven't even shown they're interested in each other and still it's better than superman, action comics. I'm just saying let the character breath some fresh air every once in a while. I'm getting annoyed with the same repetitive relationship.

@squalleon: From Geoff Johns about Superman and Wonder Woman :

“I think the bigger question is will you see any of these characters make it through. The thing about Wonder Woman and Superman is when their relationship ends, it’s going to end badly.”

“There is no good way for this one to end. And then there’s other concerns. When those two start acting out together, people get nervous. Not because they don’t think they’re heroes, but because they have such incredible power, and who could stop those two?”

I called the Anti-Monitor bit back in March after issue 6 (my bet on who his "assistant" is: Superboy Prime...duh). Superwoman's baby will obviously be Alexander Luthor (jr.) - as in the one we all know and love from COIE and IC.

All this leads me to believe Johns wants to do COIE/IC: New-52 style and maybe make it bigger by throwing Darkseid in the mix. Could be interesting.

*I'm glad evil trinity didn't die. Overall felt rushed but enjoyed it.

*Owlman could be dick's arch enemy in GRAYSON

  • We still know nothing about Alexander Luthor and it doesn’t look like we’re even going to attempt to fully understand him, his motivations, or how his abilities came about
    • The same criticism of Nightwing’s faux death remains– Batman’s not stupid. He’s Batman. He should’ve understood exactly what Lex Luthor was doing when the villain stopped Dick’s heart. In fact, 9 times out of 10, stopping Nightwing’s heart to halt the death machine would’ve been a Batman idea
      • So you’re telling me Cyborg dragged Grid’s body all the way back here just to drop it on the floor now? Why? Because of the visual, that’s why. Otherwise it makes no sense. They fought far away from the fallen watchtower in Justice League #29
        • Whaaaaaaat? It’s bad enough that Batman looked like a dummy in the Dick Grayson death scene, now he’s getting pick-pocketed by Lex Luthor? I love Lex Luthor, but he shouldn’t be able to pickpocket Batman. He’s wearing gigantic gauntlets too so he’s even got a handicap and still Batman doesn’t realize that his pockets are being pilfered? These were a rough couple of issues for Batsy
        • Mazahs and Superwoman's baby is going to be an interesting new character
