Forever Evil #6 - The Power of Mazahs!

4

The end is near but answers are revealed in this issue. Plenty of death, betrayal, and revelations inside.

The Good

We usually have to wait until the final issue of a story arc before getting the big answers. It turns out, Geoff Johns decided to mix it up a little by giving us some answers right now. There is still one more issue to go but there's plenty that goes on here.

From future solicits, we have a small idea what's to come. It's interesting to know where things will go and seeing them start to develop. Who would've thought we'd see Batman standing next to Lex Luthor, getting ready to attack the Crime Syndicate. We've come a long way to have Batman fighting with this motley crew of villains. They're bad, just not as bad as the Syndicate.

With the end so close, there is the big question of what will happen to Dick Grayson as well as who is the mystery hooded man the Syndicate brought with them from Earth 3? These two questions get answered but there's even more to see.

David Finch must be working overtime to draw all the characters contained here. If you're looking for plenty of characters, fighting, and simple bloody mayhem, you're going to find it here.

The Bad

There's a lot going on and it makes the pacing in this series feel a little disjointed. Part of it might be the other tie-in issues but we're suddenly getting a lot of action happening at once. The flow in the action in some scenes also felt a little crammed in as we'd jump around from character to character.

I dig Finch's art but every once in a while, some of the characters' looks are a little inconsistent. For example, it seems Catwoman has a tendency to put her goggles on and then slide them up and then put them back on, etc. A couple times some characters had looks on their faces, like Superwoman, and I wasn't sure what was going on in their heads.

The Verdict

There's no denying that this series is changing the face of the New 52 Universe. We know Lex has a big future ahead of him, at least for a little bit, and the Bat Universe will feel some affects as well. Geoff Johns cranks up the action and you can feel it all bubbling towards the final issue as David Finch draws fight scene after fight scene. There's still no telling what will happen next but it's a safe bet you're not going to want to miss it.

@onemoreposter: The Guardians of the Universe are not really as strong as they declare themselves to be. We have seen nothing from them that states all of them combined could be a match for a solar powered Kryptonian in the New 52. Not to mention they are probably weak against the color Yellow/parallax. Also, the Green Lantern rings are supposed to be the most powerful weapons in the universe....but can't do jack s**t against real threats. No wonder there are thousands upon thousands of GLs, and only a bare handful of Kryptonians.

Hey look! Another issue where Batman looks like an idiot! Didn't see that coming *eye roll.*

Beyond that the hooded man reveal was neat. As soon as I saw his hair color I guessed his actual identity but I didn't see his alter ego coming at all.

However, I disliked that this character has traditionally had a certain alignment that they seemed to have flipped this time around.

Also, didn't Parallax Sinestro effortlessly annihilate most of the guardians of the universe? Shouldn't he be able to solo the entire Crime Syndicate? Whats going on there?

I'm kind of worried about Dick. Johns has been trying to kill him off since infinite crisis. I just don't see what the point of his death would be here besides shock value. Everyone knows he'll be back in a few years w/ some stupid explanation.

Am I the only one who thinks the "fire in the sky" might lead to a team up between the two earths?

Glad to see this issue converted some people to Captain Cold fans. Welcome to the club! :)

It's okay, I wanna freeze Scott Lobdell's leg and shatter it after his run on TT, so that scene was cathartic all the same.

I remember when he broke out of jail and fought Flash, Flash was surprised that his powers had evolved along with the other Rogues. But in this issue, he relies on his gun?

Him and the Rouges used a device that fused them to their weapons giving them powers, but Johnny Quick did something to him to make him loose his powers.

Deathstorm took away Captain Cold's powers not Johnny Quick.

I thought this iss was great. Seems like all Hell is breaking loose and building up to an epic finale in iss#7.

Was expecting Alexander Luthor to debut at some point with the whole Earth3 schtick and CSA in the story.....but debuting as Mazahs the "reverse" Shazam?!....hmmm, interesting

I understand all reviews are opinions, and in this case I certainly have to disagree. CBR's review was more my feelings towards this very laborious, chore of a read.

Damn good issue. Aeternum Malum has been awesome, but then again I'm bais cus I love the Crime Syndicate, Lex Luthor and Ultraman. I had to restrain myself from looking at spoilers cus the damn snow delayed my comic shops delivery. Geoff Johns definitely knows how to write villains.

This sums up everything Geoff Johns has ever written about Batman. he hates the character and it shows in his pathetic attempts at writing him.

The best anti Batman line was Ultraman's by far. Him saying that Wayne's are prone to death made me grin like a mad man.

I wish we had seen a resolution to Black Adam vs Ultraman. BA did seem to be winning this one, seeing as how Ultraman was bleeding from his mouth.

Not the best issue of the series but still entertaining. Nice to see Sinestro, Captain Cold and Black Manta show off their badassery.

sorry to intrude with this silly question. I started reading this and it seems it just jumps right into the story, maybe i am missing something but was there an issue where the syndicate actually shows up and does what they do to the league? Or are we reading to find out how they accomplished this?

They show up at the end of Trinity War..which really, is the only important thing about Trinity War.

Besides the fact that Johns isn't showing much love for Batman in this book... I mean, this really isn't Batman as he should be acting... it has been a really fun event.

I just wish the Justice League book wasn't suffering so much for it. I very much dislike all the event tie-ins.

Not entirely happy with the way Bruce was portrayed here , but I guess his irrational behaviour can be explained by his fear of seeing Dick die . At least he got to beat the crap out of Luthor . Hope people won't forget how many lives that bastard has ruined .

Loved this issue. Both Lex and Lenny ended up looking like rock stars while Batman looks like a chump as he should for this particular story. I don't see how they could end this event cleanly but I've enjoyed this as a mini series overall.

It's definitely NOT ending cleanly...April solicits make that pretty clear. More of a reason to love it, IMO - unlike most other crossovers (Marvel and DC are both guilty) it is going to have really big impacts on the DCU, major team compositions, etc.

Also - was thinking about this earlier...obviously whatever the big threat the Crime Syndicate is running from is going to find its way to Earth Prime (or Earth 1, whichever it is in the New 52)...we know that there is going to be an Earth Prime/Earth 2 crossover soon...final issue of Flashpoint had Flash having a premonition with Pandora about three worlds/universes becoming one to stop some omniversal threat...perhaps that was referring to Earths 1,2, and 3? So much fun trying to interpret this stuff haha

The Batman fanyboys are out i see. "Batman should have done this or thought about this" is annoying, at the end of the day Batman is only human which means he has limits. I liked this issue overall and yea the release dates sucks but its all worth the wait. This event reminds us how great/dangerous DC's Villians are. Black manta was my favorite this.issue him and bane are my favorite new 52 villains. They arnt up for no "He he ha ha" jokes and playing around they are playing for keeps.

Yes cause Batman knows how to stop a heart.

Not sure what a lot of people's beefs are with this issue/series...?

Lot of stuff happened in this issue, both building a huge amount of tension/setting up for a big finish while still having a BUNCH of big stuff happen (Manta and Cold were simply badass...I totally lol'd after reading their significant scenes).

Generally, I think this series has been really fantastic. Johns is adding a TON of depth to some of the best villains thus far in the new 52 while generally moving things along at a great pace (not too fast, not too slow). I feel like this entire series is generally making the DCU more interesting...heroes are being beaten and forced to question their roles as protectors (thinking of Superman and Flash based on April solicits), "villains" are stepping up to protect the world and will even take the place of their nemeses, etc. It's refreshing to have this murky spectrum of grey being cast over the DCU characters as opposed to the black/white good/evil duality.

As far as Alexander Luthor goes, I kind of figured it was him (hadn't mentioned the Earth 3 version of Luthor AT ALL yet...kinda strange). Makes me also think the "big threat" they are running from may be New-52 Anti-Monitor...would certainly make sense given what we have seen thus far. Making me hopeful we will see N52 Superboy-Prime as well...

5/5 from me, for sure.

So they have the tech to keep dick held up in this giant nuclear bomb device that'll kill everything in the vicinity, yet when the syndicate actually fear the hooded guy they bring with them from another universe they stop him from saying "mazahs!"…with some tape?

Still liked the issue though. And the scene with Captain Cold and Johnny Quick?? Oh man, he got what was coming to him.
