Fantastic Four #1 - The Fall of the Fantastic Four Part 1

5

Marvel's First Family has an All-New creative team and an All-New adventure, and it's time for the F4 to fall.

The Good

Debuting it's All-New Marvel Now! flavor this week, The World's Greatest Comic Magazine (aka THE FANTASTIC FOUR) jumps right into conflict -- and heartbreak -- with a glimpse of the disbanded, dejected Four and a tearful Sue. It's a compelling opening, and James Robinson is immediately setting the tone of this book with superheroic levels of drama.

Robinson sets up the contrast for his dismal opening by introducing us to the status quo -- the pre-fall Four are a true team, fighting foes like Fin Fang Foom with precise moves, and sweeping in to help each other out. The issue makes for a wonderful jumping-on point for F4 fans and new readers alike; we get super-smart Reed, hotheaded Johnny, sassy-but-loyal Sue, and a Ben who breaks into his catchphrase (and corresponding clobbering) almost immediately. Based on the arc title, we're looking at the utter destruction of this representation of the group, but it's nice to see them in work-mode for at least a little bit.

Those action sequences are boldly illustrated, and I'm really enjoying the dynamic panels. Johnny's fireballs, Thing's clobbers -- it's all pretty Fantastic. Everyone is sleek, Fin Fang Foom looks appropriately menacing, and the colors make Kirk's illustrations pop.

There's emotional contrast, too. We get to see the Richards' acting as a family -- interacting with their children, having ultra-familiar bickering conversations, relaxing at home -- and we get to see the from-the-heart hopes and dreams of everyone on the team. Knowing that everything is headed the opposite direction -- hello, intrigue. I'm hooked, and can't wait to see how Robinson & Co. tear the family down (and hopefully build them back up!).

The Bad

I'm not sure what it is about perfectly fine blue suits turning red when reboot time comes around, but I'm not a fan. James Robinson has assured us in recent interviews that there's a reason behind the color change, and that we'll discover it as the series develops, but for now, it's not my favorite.

The Verdict

FANTASTIC FOUR opens with a predictable enough first issue -- imminent doom, a fresh (but familiar) introduction to the Four as they vanquish a monster and spend time as a family -- but the arc title and a sneaking suspicion that Robinson, Kirk, & Co. have a lot more up their sleeves than just "the First Family gone bad" make this one of the more intriguing selections of Marvel's latest renumbering. I'm always a fan of this series, and this new #1 seems like a great time for anyone and everyone to jump on board.

Enjoyed the issue, they really nailed the personalities. Hopeful for this volume. Wonder how Fin Fang Foom is involved with their downfall.

Good first issue. I hope he keeps the strive going with this series. Still not sure how I feel about the FF "breaking up" but I gotta be honest - this one issue reminded me A LOT of Ultimate Fantastic Four's demise. And I was really hoping we'd get an explanation on WHY they changed their costumes again…maybe we will…I hope.

This sounds good, i might read in trade

I was reading Fraction's run but stopped after 5 or 6 issues

I wish the Allreds (Lee, Mike and Laura) kept doing FF

I like his writing based off the few things I've read but the constant reboots and marvelnow! marvelnow! is too big of a turn off for me. Prolly pick it up in trade though.

I really enjoyed this book. After a less-than-amazing run by Fraction (I loved his FF, but his F4 didn't really do it for me), this provided a fresh start to what looks to be an exciting, new story. And man, oh man, was that some great art.

I think Robinson and his editor decided they wanted the suits to fit the story. And red a color which doesn't fit the FF was chosen to display that something was wrong with the FF.

This sounds better than what Robinson has been doing on Invaders so at least that's a blessing for the FF. I just hope that Robinson doesn't rehash or redo the same old "End of the FF" storyline. If this is his direction, it needs to be something fresh and fitting within the style and tone of what the FF are as a family and a tightly knit team. At least it's better than Fraction's ghastly run on the series so that's a good position to be in at the start of the run. Maybe I'll pick this up sometime for a decent FF story.

This was a really good first issue. It definitely has me intrigued for the future of the series. I'm currently reading through Hickman's F4 and FF for the first time and am loving that. I haven't read any of Robinson's other work, but I may have to check it out because I really enjoy his start on Invaders and here.

Yeah, I knew that, thanks though, but that's the real life reasoning. I'm hoping for an in-story reason from Reed or someone to "tell the reader" why they went from white to red.

what was the point of the costume re-design? did they really need it after everyone agreed the FF re-design was prefect.

I guess it was another unnecessary MarvelNow! idea

Can Marvel cut this garbage out with the resetting of titles and renumbering everything back to #1?
The inconsistency there is brutal. Almost as if Quesada has finally flipped his lid. Which is impossible, as well know it happened a loooooong time ago.

One of the best ANMN number 1's. James tells a really well rounded story that nicely sets the series up. I was happy to see that the Future Foundation won't be forgotten in this version. Leonard Kirk and Karl Kesel's art perfectly matched the tone with one or two stunning images. The panel of the SHIELD clean up crew scooping up Fing Fang Foom in the after math of the attack was hilarious.

I am glad to see it do good. I was thinking about jumping back into Fantastic Four. Though why are they changing the color scheme so much with the Fantastic Four. I always thought the original blue was great.

It was a good issue. Very curious too read All New Invaders now, but the first two covers are such a turn off.
