Earth 2 Annual #2 - Origin

5

Earth 2 continues to be a completely different universe as we get all the answers on who the new Batman is.

The Good

Batman may have died in EARTH 2 #1 but we all know a DC Universe, regardless of what 'dimension' it is, needs a Batman. We've seen a mysterious new Batman in action. Being even more no-nonsense than what we're used to, it's been fun and interesting wondering who it could be. While there have been rumors as to who would be under the cowl, this is the issue we find out all the details as to who and why.

How many times have we seen a Batman origin? There's been numerous Elseworlds stories but Tom Taylor makes this rendition stand out. There's an interesting aspect in giving a specific time period to that moment Thomas, Martha and young Bruce Wayne were in Crime Alley facing Joe Chill. Seeing the Waynes in the 70s is a trip. Robson Rocha does a great job capturing the early vibe in the story and seeing his Earth 2 Batman (Bruce Wayne) makes me crave seeing more.

The Bad

Of course there may be some that will have issues with this new telling of the Batman legend. But that's the beauty of having something like Earth 2. This isn't the regular DCU. Having a completely similar story as the New 52 version would just be redundant.

The Verdict

Earth 2 is a chance to see different takes on familiar characters. That is exactly what is being done. We all know the story of Batman but Tom Taylor is taking full advantage of the opportunities Earth 2 allows. This is a different take on who Batman and the Waynes were. It's not so completey removed from what we know so there are still plenty of traces to the sacred origin. Robson Rocha delivers an interesting take on the time period and it all makes you want to see more. Even if you haven't been reading Earth 2, this is a comic anyone can jump into and enjoy. EARTH 2 is shaping up to be a place where anything can happen. That keeps you on the edge of your seat.

*Note: Strangely, the digital version has a character named Francesco Francavilla while the printed version calls him Frankie Falcone.

Wait, Rex Mason? Was that a mistake or are they actually doing that?

Has me confused also. Maybe on this Earth, Miraclo will be involved in his powers also. We will have to see!

I think it was a mistake, it should have been Rex Tyler (Hourman) and not Rex Mason (Metamorpho)

Sorry but Earth 2 was pretty boring until Superman and Batman showed up. I have mixed feelings on whether I like who Batman turned out to be, but this issue was beautifully written and for that I totally agree on the 5 star rating.

Even with the reveal kinda spoiled and being sorta underwhelming I still thought this was a really good issue.

@jonny_anonymous: this. I havnt read Earth 2 yet but the main appeal was its selection of unique heroes

@timelord: actually it's supposed to be about the whole of Earth 2?and just have the jsa in it but I feel your pain.

@immortal777: My question also, there is no way I'm wasting my money on another Batman story.

@arturocalakayvee: Yeah well Batman is essential Dark-Hourman now. Come to think of it, I would much rather have had Mason turn out to be the one temporarily taking up the cowl before creating his own Superhero identity. They could have actually had a really good backstory about Rex and Bruce being friends and being in business together. Oh well, spilt milk.

That would have been a perfect world scenario, but whenever Batman is involved…it HAS to be Batman.

This book is suppose to be about the Justice Society of America can we have the focus be on them please?

No offense, timelord, but they are focusing on traditional JSA characters. Superman and Batman are both golden age characters who had long associations as founding and honorary members of the wartime Justice Society and, later, the All-Star Squadron. From the 1940s to 1985: almost 40 years. Of course, some of it got retconned into that original golden age era later but they only stopped being JSA members in 1985 with the Crisis on Infinite Earths, which rewrote DC continuity, got rid of Earth 2, and firmly set the trinity in the modern era. Yours is a common misconception of readers who grew up after the Crisis during 30 years of revised history. In other words, reintroducing them to Earth 2 can be read as a homage to the original continuity, not DC just trying to cram Supes and Bats into every comic.

Personally, I loved the comic. The origin was reminiscent of Flashpoint at a superficial level but created its own unique take on the mythos. And it was very well written.

I enjoyed most of this issue but there somethings I didn't like like the fact it's actually Thomas (contradictory, I know) and that he was a dead beat drug addict. The art was great and the story was interesting but like stated above, it feels like they're trying too hard to reincorporate elements of Flashpoint into the DCnU and that kind of annoys me. I'd rather have had Bruce dead for the entire run of Earth2 rather than have a Flashpoint story revisited for the sake of Batman being in this book.

EDIT: I can't believe I forgot to add this in: REX MASON AND MIRACLO ON EARTH2!!! YES!!! That was the best part of the book.

that's funny cause my interest has grown....I never really liked the idea of young versions of the JSA though

I did. It felt new and fresh, doing different things with characters that don't get much exposure and now we'r back to the same old Evil Superman and a slightly gruffer Batman story that get's told in like every Elseworld story. Also what happened to Steppenwolf and who Red Tornado turned out to be are total missteps IMO. DC should have stuck to the plan where Earth 2 and Earth Prime characters are unique to there universes.

they did get exposure though...they had a pretty great ongoing right up until the New 52 started

I loved this issue, everybody complaining is entitled to their own opinion but c'mon I figured it out as soon as I saw the costume. Anyways Tom Taylor has to be a soccer fan, Balotelli, Borini, & Maldini... I see what you did there.

To be fair that introduction of Superman and Batman in this world has nothing to do with DC as a company and everything to do with where James Robinson wanted to take the book. That said if I am wrong please correct me. I love this book, look forward to this issue.

This felt like such a disappoint. I think it's because the Batman identity reveal was spoiled months ago. Not to mention we've already seen something similar to this in Flashpoint. Oh well, the issue was still solidly written and I don't mind the twist on the classic Batman mythos. Just kind of wish they would have gone with someone else.

Combined with the 5 dollar price tag, I decided to skip this Bat-focused annual of a series I've been following faithfully since issue 1.

And really, what does it really say about DC (...if not the readers) that they have crowbar Batman into everything in order to make it work?Add to that; I was really enjoying Earth-2 specifically because Batman was dead and as such should have had no chance of pushing everyone else out of the spotlight.

In short: Kill Batman and take psycho Superman with him.

I think DC's Twitter account leaking the reveal in October sort deflated my excitement for this issue.
