Earth 2 #3 - Jade Knight

4

The one where Alan Scott gets a ring.

There are a lot of spoilers in this review. You've been warned.

The Good

The third issue of EARTH 2 by James Robinson opens up with a bang -- literally. Last we saw Alan Scott he had just been involved in a major train accident, and in CV's review of EARTH 2 issue #2, we discussed how the result of the accident was important in determining whether or not Sam (Alan Scott's boyfriend) was being used as a plot device. We'll get to that in a little bit. Robinson delivers a lot of action right from the get-go, and he deals with Alan Scott and his induction into the Green Lantern Corps immediately. This scene actually works pretty well, in the sense that the only reason Scott survived was due to the fact that he was saved by the GL force. I think this makes sense being that Scott is the only survivor in the crash, and he looks visibly injured and deformed as a result.

We flash forward to the Flash, (no pun intended). Last issue we got a peek at Hawkgirl, and she makes a rather triumphant return in this issue in her scene with Jay Garrick. What a great set of moments this was. I loved her first appearance in this series, and I think she looks and sounds great so far. She's really strong, confident and her snide remarks are all a little bit witty. Not to mention Nicola Scott does an amazing job depicting her character artistically. It's a great scene and a lot of fun to read the interaction between these two characters.

The Bad

Like I mentioned above, the fact that Sam dies is a pretty big deal, and it almost feels as though Robinson is using his character as a plot device. Like Alan Scott can't be a hero or do heroic things without experiencing some tragedy. The worst is that we only just met Sam, so we didn't really have a chance to get to know him and to really see how he influenced Alan Scott's character. Why did Scott love him so much? I would have really liked to have seen the romance between these two characters fleshed out a little bit more.

The Verdict

I feel a bit conflicted over the scenes where Alan Scott becomes the Green Lantern. I think that he didn't mourn enough -- that was my biggest problem. If I had lost the man I was about to propose to in a horrific accident, I don't know if some green mystical force could deter me from being upset or in pain and conflicted. I don't know, because I haven't lived it. But I do think that scene where the GL force introduces itself to Scott did happen a little bit too quickly, and that did bother me. However, the fact that Scott used the ring he was about to propose to Sam with as his power source -- that part was brilliant. It's a symbol of his love for Sam, and the way it was written, and the dialogue in that moment really made up for the rush through in the previous one. I enjoyed. I thought it was a really touching moment. The following moment where he crouches down and pays tribute to Sam was really beautiful. I really hope that Robinson brings Sam up again and uses flashbacks to show how important he was to Alan Scott. If Scott will really fight in honor of Sam's life and death, then the creative team will have to show the readers exactly that. And that's something that remains to be seen.

I love the fact that Solomon Grundy has returned to the DC Universe. I think he's a great, conflicted and interesting villain when written well, and I really enjoyed the internal dialogue of the character as he rose from the ground. It was really interesting and entertaining to see.

Overall though I think there was more I liked about this issue than didn't like.

My ONLY complaint about this issue is that I wish that Alan Scott had a cape. Its one of his classic looks that really set him apart from other Green Lanterns and It would look great on the costume

Would be awesome if Earth-2 Alan Scott somehow plays a part in the blooming Midnighter/Apollo romance in Stormwatch.

It reminds me of how Uncle Ben died in Spider-Man, or Bruce's parents died in Batman, or Krypton died in Superman, maybe they are trying to go for a old comic feel where something like that happened to motivate the hero.

Except his boyfriend's death didn't really motivate him. He didn't want to be a hero cos his boyfriend died, he was chosen and sorta had no choice. Because a bigger evil is going to come.

I wonder which villain persona Sam would fit into. I'm hoping for a showdown between Sam and Alan in future issues. I'm a bit uneasy about Sam being killed so early, but it does give me hope that Sam isn't gone for good. All of Alan's love interests were villains before Alan charms their pants off.

I am also very excited to see the return of Solomon Grundy. I loved his treatment in Starman and would love to see that character's depth return in a flagship title like Earth 2.

Great issue, and it doesn't really matter that Sam died I don't think, writers do it with heterosexual couples all the time for a reason, it works. I don't see any reason why it would be different here

Unless Sam came back as some villain love interest for Alan Scott, I think that Barb should just give every issue 4 stars just to tick Robinson off. :p

My guess is the dead gay Sam came back as Solomon Grundy. In the past podcast, James Robinson seemed to be trying to say that Sam is not really dead which was why James wanted 5 stars instead of 4 stars.
In a past podcast, James also revealed that Hawkgirl's origin is linked with another super hero and Fate was pretty obvious bec. of the past Egypt link and has been confirmed in the current earth 2 issue.

Liked the Jay Garrick and Hawkgirl parts but Alan Scott bit not so much. Happened a little to fast for me and I do not think his boyfriend had to die you'd really think after Cry for Justice he would not do that type of thing anymore. I do like that on this Earth the heroes seem more mystical and not sci fi it really gives them a unique identity. Beautiful art from Nicola Scott as always.

I like how Alan Scott is less like Hal Jordan and more like Swamp Thing. It really sets him and his power apart from and of the other GLs. Anxious to see what Robinson does with Grundy. His take on the character in Starman was brilliant.

this book is differant. I don't know why they had make Scott gay tho. Feels like they did that just for the sake of making him gay. Needless. He does look cool tho. I really dig his suit. Seeing him holding up a building with his strength instead of a using the ring was unexpected.

It caught me by surprise too. I do get a peter pa vibe from his costume for some reason though. Instead of him being Earth 2's swamp thing I thought maybe the green flame could be Ionthat somehow can exist in both universes. Didn't anyone else get a Moses and the burning bush vibe?

Some thing confuses me?

Did he get a different costume that the earlier promotions? Didn't they also sayhe would have no ring? He has super strength? Alan Scott > Hal Jordan confirmed.

So now gay men can be Women in Refrigerators too! Equal opportunity!

I'm starting to think Sara is just going to rubber stamp every issue with "Four Stars" so James can take umbrage every single month. It's quickly becoming a cherished podcast tradition.

"The One Where Alan Scott Gets The Ring." reminds me of a FRIENDS episode. " So no one told you life was gonna be this way, first you were redesigned and then they turnsd gay, it's no big deal cause your still real cool, unlike Hal Jordan who somehow turned into a tool, I'll be there for you you, even when writers change,I'll be there for you even though you're suits strange, I'll be there for you even though I don't read Earth 2.

I really enjoyed this issue, the Hawkgirl and Flash moments were fun and a great way to introduce Kendra. In regards to Alan, I pretty much feel the same as Babs. Using the ring as his power source was a nice touch but I would have liked to see more of Sam. Solomon's reveal was absolutely brilliant and i'm eager to read the next issue.

@LordRequiem:

Like Adnan said Alan definitely isn't just a regular Green Lantern. In fact based on the way Grundy was introduced and the refrences to the 'Green' and the 'Grey' I think it's possible, that Alan is this Earth's version of Swamp Thing.

Edit: How could I forget the best part of this issue. Dr. Fate!! I really hope we get to see him soon,.

So is Alan Scott no longer powered by the Starheart? Is he just a regular green lantern? If that be the case, then this alteration is very unsatisfactory.

We don't know whether or not the "green force" is the Starheart or not yet, but he definitely isn't just a regular green lantern (or atleast, there doesn't seem to be any sort of corps-type organization like the main coninuity GL)

I agree with pretty much everything this review says. Looking forward to the next issue.

Everyone deals with grief differently, maybe Alan was bottling it up and directing it at whatever evil the green fire mentioned, that's why he agreed so quickly to becoming the Earth's new protector when a talking green fire asked him to.

@doordoor123: this is one of the more honest scores that comicvine gives out..im glad they gave for..i thought this issue was 4 at best. it was a good issue but it wasnt like a 5 out of 5. for example the whole controversy of alan being gay, about to marry his boyfriend then all of a sudden losing his BF and then getting a ring? thats a flaw that cant be overlooked, sure it wasnt bad but it definitley is a flaw which makes it 4 stars for sure. i dotn know why people always want to rate things 5 all the time. not everything is perfect. aha

The token Asian always dies first. lol. XD

I like how they use Alan's proposal ring as the Green Lantern's ring. I don't think Sam is gone for good according to Robinson's podcast. I'm hoping that he comes back as a villain. It's one of Alan's love interest's tradition. They all start out as villains. I don't expect Sam to be any difference. I was a bit surprised how little Alan cares about his boyfriend's death. He doesn't even cry, maybe that's why Sam may become a villain...

He isn't even the token asian. He isn't even part of the team. That said I hope he either doesn't return so Alan Scott can date an actual super powered being or return with some sorta powers.

And before anyone accuse me to be racist, I'm asian.

Also, which podcast are you talking about? I would love to listen to that podcast also.

Still, I haven't read the issue yet, I need to see for myself how the death played out. Also a death of a character does not necessarily mean the end - there are always narrative formulas, for instance: flashbacks, to establish the past relationship retroactively.

James said she could have gave him a bad review for this death XD But babs can't deny the greatness of this series lol
