Earth 2 #2 - Age of Wonders

4

With the Trinity dead, who will save Earth 2 from the impending threat?

The Good

With the news about Alan Scott's sexuality hitting the web, all eyes were on the release of the second issue of EARTH 2 today -- and for the most part, it did not disappoint. The issue opens with Mr. Terrific who had recently landed on what appears to be the island of Manhattan -- only very different. I think the way James writes Mr. Terrific's deduction of where he landed was great, and felt it was a good scene. Nicola Scott does a great job of setting up EARTH 2's Times Square, as well. The flow of the story kicks off really well, and the pacing is consistent throughout the issue. We quickly move to Jay Garrick in a scene between the Earth 2 Flash and the God Mercury in Lansing, Michigan. The exchange between the two characters is brilliant and I felt that the dialogue between the two characters was really powerful. In fact, this was probably my favorite moment in the entire issue. The exchange between the two characters and the passing of the torch from a God to a man with so little confidence was an all-around great moment. It was really powerful and did both characters justice. More importantly, I think James spent just the right amount of time on this scene, and the scene following it where Jay is discovering his powers.

The scene with Alan Scott is nice -- I thought it was a great way to introduce the character's sexuality: by showing him being in love with Same, without talking about the subject -- introducing it this way really made the moment feel natural.

Great art by Nicola Scott as always; she did a fantastic job portraying the emotions of the characters in this issue. Also, what a beautiful image of Hawkgirl! Her appearance is breathtaking, and her new costume is really nice.

The Bad

I admit, I'm not so sure about the end. I'll be disappointed if we are introduced to Sam (Alan Scott's boyfriend), and he is killed off so quickly following Scott's proposal. Again, this can happen in a comic, but it has to be done right. If it does happen, I will want (as the reader) to see a dramatic change in Scott's character, behavior, and outlook on life. Also, if it does happen; I hope that Robinson will reinforce why Sam was so important to Scott in the first place. There are ways for a writer to memorialize a character even in death, and I look forward to seeing if this is something Robinson does with these two characters in this series.

The Verdict

A lot of really big developments happen in this issue, and I love that Robinson is taking his time introducing readers to these characters before he established the EARTH 2 Justice Society. Although it's inevitable, the journey getting there is just as important and it what makes the reader care about the characters. While I'm not sure how I feel about the ending of this issue, I will definitely be back for more. Definitely looking forward to this.

I'm not eager to dogpile on a post that has already received more than its share of comments, but there was one aspect to Zackattack's response that no one else mentioned that merits a separate response.

@zackattack529 said:

@Afro_Warrior: before this issue came out i knew they were gonna get in on the gay marriage thing soon enough..but that last page where he proposes just did it for me. i didnt thinkj they would do it that quick. but either way when it comes down to it. no one is gonna tell me this is all coincidence

I can easily believe this is a coincidence.

The extent to which gay marriage has been in the news in the last two years is pretty remarkable. What I believe happened was that writers and/or editors of both companies took note of our culture's growing fascination with this subject. It has only been within these last few years that public opinion has finally begun to fall on the side of allowing gay marriage. These things are becoming enormous in the greater culture that we live in, not just in the microcosm comics culture we all love. American history will note this time, our time, as the point at which the scales began to tip on this issue.

To assume that James Robinson and DC comics editors have been oblivious to this cultural shift and are ONLY conscious of gay marriage issues through the adventures of Northstar and X-Men comics is quite the wild assertion. This stuff is part of the zeitgeist. It is entering the thoughts of nearly everyone. Is it really so much of a coincidence that two companies attempt to become timely in regards to the rest of our culture at the same time? I certainly don't believe so.

Spoilers in the deck. Sucks to be a new reader to this series.

The premise of the series doesn't count as a spoiler after the second issue is out...that'd be like me reviewing Y: The Last Man #2 and putting in the deck "With all the men dead but Yorick, how will our last man survive?"

Also, I've kind of been avoiding these New Waves since I've already got trouble keeping up with all the other comics I read but if this comic could just achieve one five-star issue I think I'd be willing to give it a shot...

Nothing will last forever and the current dc policy is to do reboots in at least around every 10 years so earth 2 probably won't last that long.
Earth 2 has already caused some confusion bec. some dumb people thought the gay Green Lantern is Hal Jordan. Dc should just forget earth 2 to avoid confusing the dumber customers and just reboot the properties on main earth same as the reboots of Ray, Phantom lady and Doll Man, which are all on main earth. Better to just reboot Justice Society on main earth.

So after Women in refrigerators, we now have gays on trains... Great job DC: "Oh let's make one of classic characters gay and kill his boyfriend in the first issue they appear" Just... wow... and I'm not even gay but I found incredibily offensive, specially because it did feel like a natural romance and not some rushed in bullcrap.

Flower prancing, really? Most gays are not feminine, and it's very offensive for you to say that. I just don't understand why people can't just walk away from the title they have no interest in instead of making hurtful comments to a group of people for no apparent reasons.

one million moms would be proud

but really this was a great issue and the homosexuality was handled very well

@Zabilac: Totally agree about the ring thing.

@Dernman I expect Fox Way is a nod to Golden Age JSA writer Gardner Fox rather than the news corp.

This was a great issue. I am curious to see if and how Jade (and by extension Obsidian, I guess, but I only ever paid attention to Jade) is brought back into the universe. Adoption seems like the most obvious way. It's clear that they aren't afraid to really change up these characters, so Jade's powers wouldn't have to be inherited from Alan genetically, but could be passed on some other way. Maybe Alan could create another ring ala Sinestro on the main Green Lantern series.

EDIT: Also, the Reis covers are good, but does anyone else kind of wish that Scott was doing the covers as well? Because her art is delightful.

As in your face as any romance with a straight character and his love interest would be. The panels shown in the interview CV did with Robinson a couple days ago are about the extent of it.

Anyone else notice Fox Way in Earth 2. Funny I don't think turning Alan Scott is the Fox News way. :p First there was Women in a Refrigerator now we have Men on a train. :p Ug I can just see someone taking that serious and start a list.

Do you know how many "tragedies" that befall the superheroes' love interest?

I can recall Gwen for Spiderman, Jean for Scott, Sam for Allan.

I can't remember anyone else at the moment. Is the trope really that popular?

Although it was a tragedy for Scott I would say Jean was more about her character then Scott. As far as the tragedies befalling love interest it's just one of many things that happen to characters that is common. Heroes live dangerous lives and the people around them get hurt. It would be even more dumb if it didn't.

I agree, I don't think it's fair for people to use "bury your gays" trope. It's true that his boyfriend got killed, but straight superheroes' love interest got killed all the time. It's fair game for Alan to have the same treatment. I kinda like this development. It gives him a motivation to become a superhero. Besides, I would prefer his relationship to develop like any straight couple instead of just sticking a random love interest for him. I know it's cliche, but I somehow want Sam to come back to get revenge on Alan.

Dude, you've blacked out the whole "bad" part of the review. Seems liek a waste of time. Surely there must've been some spoiler free way of writing that part. If not no sense taking the time and effort to write a run down of the "bad" if you're just gonna black it out.

Just sayin'

This new earth 2 does seem quite different from the old one. Terry Sloane or Terry Sloan has caught the ozymandias fever. Somebody more dangerous than Darkseid might be Darkseid's granny. Michael Holt might succeed in killing more comic book titles ?

That was a pretty solid issue and Earth 2 is probably one of my favorite series of the New 52 right now. Great art, awesome story, beautiful scenes... I especially liked the part with Jay and even the scene with Mr. Terrific was interesting. As for the ending, even if it was a little bit brutal, it really looked like a nod to Marvel's gay wedding and I couldn't stop laughing. Still, that could be a pretty good set up for making Alan Scott more awesome and interesting than he already is!

Seriously, there's a lot of potential here and it really looks promising. Jay and Alan are some awesome characters and I can't wait to see more of them and the rest of Earth 2. Well done James Robinson!

Two issues in and I am hooked. James Robinson may be telling a slow story here but it is shaping up to be great. Scott's art is to be commended as well. So many artists get in the rut of drawing three our four different generic characters, everyone in this book looks different and you can tell a great deal of thought was put into each one.

James Anderson stated he wanted a gay character long before working on Earth-2. He comes up with the idea long before Marvel announces the wedding. I don't think it's a coincidence that both events happen so closely to each other since June is GLBT month.

@zackattack529:

I was hoping you where aping other comic fans who actually believe that making Alan gay is because of the recent press coverage Marvel has been getting as a result of their wedding.

I really don't see how this could be construed as DC attempting to 'get in' on the gay marriage aspect. It was revealed FIFTEEN days ago that Northstar would be getting married. Are you honestly telling me, that you believe DC decided not only to make Alan gay, but also give him a boyfriend, have him propose and then apparently kill off the man Alan loves. All because Marvel are getting some coverage over a marriage? That seem fairly ridiculous to me and i'm not even sure it would be possible.

I thought it was a strong issue, i really enjoyed Jay's characterisation so far. Robinson said Jay would be like able and he was definitely right, i'm already loving him. Not at all surprised by what happened with Scott and Sam it's a pretty standard trope that a heroes lover dies during their superhero forming, and it further lends credence to the idea that DC didn't want to make a big deal of Alan being gay. I mean you don't make a character's sexuality a big thing (especially if their sexuality has changed in comparison to previous incarnations) only to kill of there lover

I agree with Babs that the Mr Terrific scene was well written, but am i the only one surprised that Terry Sloane the first Mister Terrific is being portrayed as a villain in his first appearance? It's definitely piqued my interest, but i did not see that coming at all.

A very good issue when all's said and done.
