Earth 2 #2 - Age of Wonders

4

With the Trinity dead, who will save Earth 2 from the impending threat?

The Good

With the news about Alan Scott's sexuality hitting the web, all eyes were on the release of the second issue of EARTH 2 today -- and for the most part, it did not disappoint. The issue opens with Mr. Terrific who had recently landed on what appears to be the island of Manhattan -- only very different. I think the way James writes Mr. Terrific's deduction of where he landed was great, and felt it was a good scene. Nicola Scott does a great job of setting up EARTH 2's Times Square, as well. The flow of the story kicks off really well, and the pacing is consistent throughout the issue. We quickly move to Jay Garrick in a scene between the Earth 2 Flash and the God Mercury in Lansing, Michigan. The exchange between the two characters is brilliant and I felt that the dialogue between the two characters was really powerful. In fact, this was probably my favorite moment in the entire issue. The exchange between the two characters and the passing of the torch from a God to a man with so little confidence was an all-around great moment. It was really powerful and did both characters justice. More importantly, I think James spent just the right amount of time on this scene, and the scene following it where Jay is discovering his powers.

The scene with Alan Scott is nice -- I thought it was a great way to introduce the character's sexuality: by showing him being in love with Same, without talking about the subject -- introducing it this way really made the moment feel natural.

Great art by Nicola Scott as always; she did a fantastic job portraying the emotions of the characters in this issue. Also, what a beautiful image of Hawkgirl! Her appearance is breathtaking, and her new costume is really nice.

The Bad

I admit, I'm not so sure about the end. I'll be disappointed if we are introduced to Sam (Alan Scott's boyfriend), and he is killed off so quickly following Scott's proposal. Again, this can happen in a comic, but it has to be done right. If it does happen, I will want (as the reader) to see a dramatic change in Scott's character, behavior, and outlook on life. Also, if it does happen; I hope that Robinson will reinforce why Sam was so important to Scott in the first place. There are ways for a writer to memorialize a character even in death, and I look forward to seeing if this is something Robinson does with these two characters in this series.

The Verdict

A lot of really big developments happen in this issue, and I love that Robinson is taking his time introducing readers to these characters before he established the EARTH 2 Justice Society. Although it's inevitable, the journey getting there is just as important and it what makes the reader care about the characters. While I'm not sure how I feel about the ending of this issue, I will definitely be back for more. Definitely looking forward to this.

Im impressed with how sleek Jay Garrick's costume is, it definitely fits a speedster and the fact that it replaces his clothes when needed is awesome

I'm calling it right now. Alan's wedding ring is going to become his new power ring.

Yeah, most people I've talked to have said this.

I thought there wasn't going to be a ring or lantern. I know they said there will be no lantern.

Well aside from the flowery dialogue and the sinning against god it was a solid issue.

Don't we have enough comics with gay antics?

I was hoping DC would keep the pillow-biting and flower prancing to a minimum.

Flower prancing, really? Most gays are not feminine, and it's very offensive for you to say that. I just don't understand why people can't just walk away from the title they have no interest in instead of making hurtful comments to a group of people for no apparent reasons.

So after Women in refrigerators, we now have gays on trains... Great job DC: "Oh let's make one of classic characters gay and kill his boyfriend in the first issue they appear" Just... wow... and I'm not even gay but I found incredibily offensive, specially because it did feel like a natural romance and not some rushed in bullcrap.

Nothing will last forever and the current dc policy is to do reboots in at least around every 10 years so earth 2 probably won't last that long.
Earth 2 has already caused some confusion bec. some dumb people thought the gay Green Lantern is Hal Jordan. Dc should just forget earth 2 to avoid confusing the dumber customers and just reboot the properties on main earth same as the reboots of Ray, Phantom lady and Doll Man, which are all on main earth. Better to just reboot Justice Society on main earth.

Spoilers in the deck. Sucks to be a new reader to this series.

The premise of the series doesn't count as a spoiler after the second issue is out...that'd be like me reviewing Y: The Last Man #2 and putting in the deck "With all the men dead but Yorick, how will our last man survive?"

Also, I've kind of been avoiding these New Waves since I've already got trouble keeping up with all the other comics I read but if this comic could just achieve one five-star issue I think I'd be willing to give it a shot...

I'm not eager to dogpile on a post that has already received more than its share of comments, but there was one aspect to Zackattack's response that no one else mentioned that merits a separate response.

@Afro_Warrior: before this issue came out i knew they were gonna get in on the gay marriage thing soon enough..but that last page where he proposes just did it for me. i didnt thinkj they would do it that quick. but either way when it comes down to it. no one is gonna tell me this is all coincidence

I can easily believe this is a coincidence.

The extent to which gay marriage has been in the news in the last two years is pretty remarkable. What I believe happened was that writers and/or editors of both companies took note of our culture's growing fascination with this subject. It has only been within these last few years that public opinion has finally begun to fall on the side of allowing gay marriage. These things are becoming enormous in the greater culture that we live in, not just in the microcosm comics culture we all love. American history will note this time, our time, as the point at which the scales began to tip on this issue.

To assume that James Robinson and DC comics editors have been oblivious to this cultural shift and are ONLY conscious of gay marriage issues through the adventures of Northstar and X-Men comics is quite the wild assertion. This stuff is part of the zeitgeist. It is entering the thoughts of nearly everyone. Is it really so much of a coincidence that two companies attempt to become timely in regards to the rest of our culture at the same time? I certainly don't believe so.
