Deathstroke #16 - To Kill the Unkillable Man

5

Deathstroke unveils his plan to kill an unkillable foe.

The Good

I went into this issue thinking Slade Wilson's solution to killing Koschei was fairly obvious. I was right (for the most part), but man oh man, that didn't make this read any less epic. I cheered at least once and overall it's just great to see the character in good hands.

Slade's smart, competent, and flat-out awesome. That's exactly how he should be and it's so refreshing to see him treated in such a proper manner. Yes, he was smacked around in the last issue, but that was just a tactical ploy to let his arrogant foe think he was in charge and reveal some critical information -- info that'll lead to his downfall. This time around, Slade's not holding back and watching him unleash is a real treat.

The artwork is fine, only delivering a few impressive panels (most notably Slade using that blade) and never really dipping below average either. The opening scene has some impressive use of colors. The bright explosion provides a neat contrast to Slade's rather vivid costume and really gives the scene some depth.

The Bad

No critical complaints here.

The Verdict

Writer Justin Jordan takes over the title with an incredibly fun yet short story. Deathstroke appears to be back in full force and I'm optimistic about what Jordan has in store for DC's deadliest mercenary. This issue is action packed and only takes a minor break a few pages in. If you're a Deathstroke fan, odds are you'll love it.

Oh yeah, the teaser for the next issue is "How to fight 10,000 ninjas." Um, yes, please!

Deathstroke has been a staple DC comic for me since #1 and I'm hoping Koschei isn't gone forever, I thought he was pretty cool.

He could have lied and just shot himself to make DS think he wanted to die. So perhaps.

Lets hope enough support re-appears before the next round of cancellations are decided.

Cant remember the last time a Deathstroke comic was as satisfying as this, the way Koschei killed himself was rather obvious right from the start but damn it felt good.

Man, I am so glad that I added this to my pull list since Jordan took over. I couldn't be happier with the direction that this series is currently going in and a really hope that its able to do better.

Deathstroke is one of my favorite villains so its good to see him in the right hands and I hope this title is around for the long haul.

@matmatxm8: Tell that to the squadron of JLAers he took down in Identity Crisis. Although that's not in continuity anymore, it speaks to his typical modus operandi and personality, which is still intact. And last I heard, he's supposed to be going up against the Teen Titans soon.

Plus, I wouldn't call a contract killer a neutral personality. By moral standards, he is very much a villain.

If he's really a villain,

then why didn't he just kill the freedom fighters for fun?

why is he such a nice guy at Deathstroke #12?

why didn't he just kill hawkman and stole all of the nth metal and claim the reward for the head of hawkman?

sound like a neutral personality to me

Because not all villains are Joker. Not all villains are BWAHAHAHAHA crazy.

Magneto was/is considered a villain even though he always had a noble cause. Its the same story for Ra's al Ghul. Its their methods that make them villains even though they have noble motives/ideals/personalities. Its the same deal with Deathstroke. He's a killer. Not an indiscriminate killer, but a killer nonetheless.

And I bet you if it had been in his contract to kill the freedom fighters, he probably would have done it. They weren't his allies, just a means to an end.

If/when Slade runs into any real heroes, he's probably gonna have to fight them because they consider him a villain. And from the looks of it, DC (the editors and the writers) considers him a villain as well because they have included in their solicitation of the books that he's currently starring in (Deathstroke and Team 7) descriptions of him as a villain.
