Deadpool #7 - Drinking Game Review

5

Go back in time with the Merc with a Mouth in this absurdly funny issue.

The Good

Oh my God, I’m nearly in tears after reading this issue -- tears of laughter, of course. Sure, I would love to see where writers Gerry Duggan and Brian Posehn are going with Deadpool after their opening story, but this issue is a beyond hysterical intermission. Practically every single page had to give me a really, really good laugh. From a young Flash parking in a handicap spot to Scott Lang’s check to Cable’s return (Cable needs to wear that at all times), this issue was flat out hilarious. Warning: do not enjoy a drink while reading this because you will end up spitting it.

The artwork by Scott Koblish and Val Staples transports you back in time. Issue #7 legitimately feels like an utterly insane issue that actually could have actually come out back then. Everything from faded pages to a near perfect duplication of the classic style makes this an issue you simply have to appreciate for all of its beautiful ridiculousness.

The Bad

If you're expecting a play-by-play parody of IRON MAN #128, you'll be disappointed. Aside from that, I've got nothing to complain about. Loved it.

The Verdict

I'm calling it right now: this is the funniest issue of 2013. I've consulted with Cable and he agrees, too. Seriously, the entire issue is dedicated to delivering big laughs and it absolutely succeeds and then some. I want to see more development from Deadpool in the primary story, but I honestly don't care if he's a goofy fool in a standalone tale -- especially if it makes me burst into laughter so frequently. Now if you'll excuse me, I have a strong urge to read DEADPOOL #11 again.

I'm over "absurdly funny" Deadpool. Not that this wasn't, because it was.

I'm just over it. I grew up with the acerbic and witty, but LETHAL assassin who people feared WAY more than they were annoyed by. Now he's Marvel's joke. Posehn does joke Deadpool better than most, but that's not the Deadpool I want. After Way's abominable run, I wanted this to be more along the lines of Kelly/Priest/Nicieza/Simone/Swierczynski's Deadpool. It's not. Until someone does that, I'm out.

It's not that this is bad. It's just juvenile and that's not who Deadpool is. I feel like people are way more accepting of this because so few people seem to have read him at his best. They mostly consider Way's run to be THE run. It's sad.

While I love the new run, I agree with this. Would love the character to be more lethal.

Looking forward to this issue.

This issue was hilarious. I loved it! Also the letters column is equally funny. Those writers really love to pick on Patton Oswald.

Stick around, Gerry Duggan has promised that the following arc is going to get really dark and have a lot more serious moments than the previous arc. From the sounds of things, it's going to be good. Preston is in Deadpool's mind and is going to find some deeply repressed memories that Deadpool doesn't want people to see, plus there's still the matter of what Dr. Strange told Deadpool.

These guys aren't as good as Joe Kelly, but they are still miles better than Daniel Way and on par with Rick Remender in my opinion.

@the_lobster_: That sounds fantastic! I was curious about the Dr. Strange moment. Looking forward to it.

I've been loving Now Deadpool, but this issue took me by particular surprise. Flawless throwback art, entertaining story, and non stop one off gags that never fell flat. Way's Deadpool run was fine, I followed it for most of it's 60 plus issue run, but the Deadpool that Duggan and Posehn are giving us is my Deadpool.

@the_mast: The only people who ever really feared Deadpool more than they were annoyed by him in Kelly's run were people who knew him, in fact, the majority of the moments where he looked lethal were the ones where he one upped people like Taskmaster who underestimated him. And that's pretty much what he did in the last 2 issues, in 6 he beat Washington in combat after getting mocked, and even in this mainly joking issue, he outsmarted a demon trying to steal his soul. Yeah, the first arc was pretty overdone with the jokes, but you gotta give it a little longer before you make a judgment like that man.

This comic put a big ol' smile on my face. Very few comics make me laugh out loud quite like Deadpool. The previous issue was fantastic but this one might have rocketed this series to the top on my Marvel books. I'm chomping at the bit for more.

I might be part of the minority, but I could not get myself to like the whole presidents arc. This was a krazy and welcome departure from that though. Well-deserved 5 stars. I lol'd a few times.

The excuse given at the outset that they didn't have time to write an all-new story irked me to say the least. The sheer "am I tripping on shrooms" surrealism of this re-run issue was fun, but so far the new Deadpool run has overall been shite in my opinion. First, the artwork, with Deadpool looking more like an animated zombie than ever before, has been awful. Second, his character has been written flat and cartoon-like (rather than 21st century comic like, which is indeed a much different thing), and I'm sad the writers have reverted to using hackneyed phrases and stock sentences. It all reminds me of the great South Park episode where they make fun of how Family Guy is actually written by a tank of manatees from random story lines that somehow stitch together to make random jokes. I love Deadpool, but the Deadpool I loved appears to be dead, and he's been replaced by a 2 dimensional caricature of a much more complex and serious character. Like f-off - dead Presidents?! Seriously?! That's the best this creative team could come up with? Each frame of each issue was really painful, and I kept hoping my own healing factor would compensate for the lack of thought and mostly lack of cojones in re-launching one of the best characters in the Marvel U. Time to free the manatees gently nudging story balls together, and get someone with real innovative genius like Simon Spurrier to take over this book.
