Deadpool #2 - We Fought A Zoo Review

4

Undead Teddy Roosevelt heads to the Los Angeles Zoo for a hunt. It's up to Deadpool to eliminate the 26th US President, and if possible, save the animals.

The Good

Tony Moore was born to illustrate a Deadpool series. His uniquely cartoonish yet detailed and appropriately repulsive work (maskless Wade, the over-the-top gore) is a perfect fit for the Merc with a mouth. The splash page ("splash" really is a fitting term for this one) is gruesome. It's like looking at the sun: it hurts your eyes but you don't want to look away.

But before we dive into a world filled with hideous skin conditions, Presidents being shot in the face and intestines flooding out of bodies, there's an absurdly adorable Deadpool on the recap page. Marvel needs to make a plush inspired by this image or they're seriously missing out on an amazing product.

As expected, DEADPOOL #2 is big on humor. There's smaller stuff that'll make you chuckle (JFK's accent and Necromancer pulling a huge book from his kilt) and some flat-out ridiculous moments that are sure to slap a smile across your face (Teddy uppercutting a bear, for example). There's also quite a few jabs at Deadpool's history. His excessive pouches are mocked at one point and another time Deadpool references how he used to chat with himself. Could he be doing that once again... or is Benjamin Franklin actually there? I'm curious to see how that'll play out.

The Bad

While the issue does have plenty of good lowbrow humor, unfortunately not all of the jokes deliver. Sometimes references feel a bit forced and all too frequent. I get the objective is to have a goofy and fun book for Marvel, but it's okay to go a page or so without aiming for laughs. For example, the "disco balls" remark made me roll my eyes. It felt unnecessary to me, especially when there was much funnier material taking place in the panel.

The ending makes me wonder why S.H.I.E.L.D. didn't just reach out to this guy in the first place. Definitely seems like the logical option for this kind of an issue.

The Verdict

Two issues in and DEADPOOL remains strong as Marvel's go-to book for absurdity. Seeing Deadpool face individual Presidents is sure to be a unique and creative experience as each battle (so far) is tailor-made to capitalize on their personalities. The overall plot is moving at a steady rate and Tony Moore's artwork is phenomenal. Overall, a solid start to Deadpool's new run and hopefully it'll remain at this level of quality.

One of the background characters running away is my LCS owner lol Tony Moore drew him in there. I had him autograph it, he was so excited to be in a comic. I mean who wouldn't be!

My favorite was when he was gored! SPLOOORP! "Gross, My bodies never said sploorp before." ... or something like that.

Damnit, I really liked #1and I was hoping this issue would get a negative reaction so I didn't have to add yet ANOTHER title to my pull list. So much for paying rent...

Awesome. I have been in the mood for a book like this for awhile. (One with some humor in it.) Seems like they have a good thing going here... I hope they can keep it up... (I am really digging Moore's art on this too...)

This book is hilarious! The dialogue between Deadpool and the S.H.I.E.L.D agents after the elephant attack had me rolling!

I've never been too big of a Deadpool fan, but it's always nice to see a book that's fun and doesn't take itself too seriously. With all the heavy and intersecting plot threads, dying characters, and crossovers galore in the Marvel U, it's good to see a book you can pick up and enjoy for what it is.

So this is a bi-weekly title?

Meh, this new Deadpool series isn't awful, but the new writer doesn't use the two Deadpool thought boxes. After them being around so long I think the three way conversations Deadpool used to have with him self was the best part of Deadpool. Plus if you think about it Yellow Thought Box and White Thought Box were kind of like their own characters by the end of the series.

Deadpool without the multiple voices: 1991-2008

Deadpool with the multiple voices 2008-2012

@k4tzm4n: So..... I think the point you're trying to make is that 4 year isn't as long as 15 years? That's true..... Doesn't really change anything, but that's true :)

I know it's a new thing when compared to the full history of the character but it's something I'm just used to now.... It's like it be weird is Spider-man wasn't an Avenger anymore when 1962-2003 he wasn't an Avenger and 2004-2012 he is an Avenger.

@Teerack: Correct.

I don't believe that's a valid comparison, though. Spider-Man earned a spot on the Avengers after years and years of proving himself. Deadpool's multiple voices is something Daniel Way created without any explanation other than it adds an extra layer of comedic value to the character. I understand if you think it's become a significant part of the character, but I disagree and don't think it's important for the character to succeed.

@k4tzm4n: Yeah I never said anything about Deadpool being unable to succeed with out the voices lol.. Only said i thought it was meh because i liked the multiple voices. Regardless of the voices though I haven't found anything in Deadpool 1 or 2 funny. I really hope it gets better.
