DC Universe Presents #2 - Twenty Questions, Part 2

3

Boston Brand tries to find meaning in his afterlife, only to end up in a super-natural nightclub in downtown Gotham.

Boston "Deadman" Brand heads to a super-natural nightclub in Gotham to find the Librarian, an angel who holds books about everyone's lives and fates.

The Good

Deadman tells a terrible joke on stage at a nightclub in front of a bunch of super-natural creatures. Positively hilarious. Have you bought the issue yet? No? Well, this issue, more than the last one, is a bit more light-hearted than anything else. It's fun, fast-paced, and introduces the readers to some new characters.

I like the introduction to the super-natural realm that exists within Gotham City. I'd like to see this side of the city become a recurring entity in the DC Universe book, even after Deadman is no longer the star.

So far, I've really enjoyed what Paul Jenkins and Bernard Chang have brought to the table. They've put out two solid issues, and I like where the story is going with the Librarian and Deadman trying to find his fate. It's a bit different than the other stories we've been seeing this character in for the past few years.

The Bad

I'm a tad confused about some of the more detailed aspects of what Deadman can and can't do. I thought he couldn't pick up objects at all because he's essentially a ghost. I also thought that no one could see him at all. Maybe other mystics have before? I can't specifically remember anyone seeing him in his Deadman form though.

I hate the fact there's no catch-up page in the front of this book. I really enjoy it, and aside from the fact that I want new readers to hop on, I think it helps a lot with current readers of the book. Sometimes, fans need a brief catch-up too, especially if they read a lot of books each month.

I wish this book was a tad darker.

The Verdict

Overall, I am enjoying this series and story. DC Universe Presents: Deadman #2 gives us an interesting look into Gotham's super-natural society. It's a fun book and the story has been pretty interesting. I was confused about Deadman's abilities and non-abilities though, and I felt like that this book wasn't new reader friendly at all. I recommend this book, and I also recommend jumping into people's bodies and controlling them.
