Daredevil #26 - Punching Cancer

5

After a serious beating, Matt deduces the identity of the man who has been tormenting him.

The Good

As someone who has been consistently keeping up with DAREDEVIL and thoroughly enjoying the series I sometimes find it hard to believe that an already amazing series can become even better. That is exactly the case with this particular issue. Just when I thought things could not get more interesting and exciting, Waid knocks it out of the park with DAREDEVIL #26.

Who is the man behind the mask thinking and plotting ways of destroying Daredevil's life? Who has hired assassin's to give him the run of his life, break him psychologically in order to cripple him emotionally and physically? It is in this issue that we find the answer to that question and finally uncover the man responsible for giving Matt the hell he has been forced to endure.

Even though Waid gives us many of the answers we have been searching for in this issue, he maintains a certain momentum and constructs a story that is bound to keep readers of this series at the very edge of their seats. The result is a fantastic tale that is truly thrilling and believable because what happens here has been a long time coming.

We get everything in this comic: from a glimpse at the importance of the relationship (once again) between Matt and Foggy, to the mental break-down of Matt. It's excitement not only on a physical level for this character, but also a psychological one and that's what makes it awesome.

Pair Waid's incredible story-telling with the talents of Chris Samnee and Javier Rodriguez and we have a recipe for perfection.

The Bad

There is really nothing bad about this issue: it is, in a word, brilliant.

The Verdict

Chris Samnee absolutely blew me away with this issue. Not only does he capture the expressions and emotions of these characters brilliantly, but the way he structures his panels is phenomenal. There is one page in particular that I found really impressive where he focused each panel on a piece and body part of the man behind Matt's torment, linking each individual panel with each word. The result is incredible and simply stunning.

Everything we see in this issue has been a long time coming, and it will be interesting to see whether or not Matt is right about the identity of his tormentor, or whether he is stuck in the wrong place at the worst time. While it would be easy to pick up this issue and follow the story along from here, I don't recommend. I think you would miss out on a lot of the beauty of this story by starting here.

This issue is definitely worth a read: it's a fantastic ride and I can't wait to see what the creative team has in store for these characters in issue #27.

Damn how I wish I had started reading Daredevil. I'm new to comics, just been reading for about half a year but this is a series I've seen nothing but great reviews about.

Oh man the covers. Gosh I would give every issue 5 stars just for the covers. Daredevil is the 2nd book out there in my opinion and will always deliver. 5/5

As much as I like this villain I wish they would of chose one of DD lesser known villains and raise his or her profile.

I really felt Matt's fear and paranoia in this issue. Terrifying! The backup was lighthearted and it balanced everything out nicely. Doesn't get any better than this.

Loved this issue and the big reveal was awesome! Though I agree with @trevel8182 that they should have used someone else. I love Bullseye....but seriously how many times can this guy come back from the dead? I am excited to see the final show down between Ikari and Matt. Also.....Kirsten...."Baby Come back! You can blame it all on me!"

I think the villain reveal is brilliant. Said character has never been much of a thinker and has often fallen victim to their own arrogance. After all, some of their greatest plans were putting Daredevil on a crossbow and firing him into the ocean, swapping places with him or fighting him live on television. Seeing this individual finally rely on their brain instead of their physical skills is sure to be great.

@hollowprince65: This is the only time Lester has died. Prior to this, he's only been paralyzed.

One of the absolute best Daredevil issues ever, by arguably the best man to ever write the character.

THAT scene with Benson was unbelievable. Make us feel like Matt is a paranoid guy, then compound the paranoia by creepily justifying it. Un-be-lievable.

I knew who both the villains were the second they showed Matt's pic in the middle of photos arranged like a target. The predictability of it did detract a little bit for me, but it's just sensational writing.

"I like it when there's no witty banter."

Oh my god. Are people serious? Does Matt have to be a giant sad sack for eternity? Good grief.

Tell us more about your distaste for a series you don't pay for or like.

Anyway, I also loved that the clothes on the washing line actually spell "Daredevil".

As always, my favorite book. Great issue, really gets into the story and the villain was awesome. The only thing I regret is that my LCS didn't have the variant cover like I wanted. I always try to get variants.

I was legitimately blown away by the villain reveal. I must have spent a good five minutes staring at that second page trying to figure out for myself who the hell this guy is. Then I went back again afterward and though "Goddammit, how did I miss the stab wounds?!"

So solid! I do wonder about Bullseye's transformation into a master planner though, that's not really his style. The kind of explain it by saying he was forced to learn to do it because of being in his sarcophagus thing, but I still don't really buy it. I do kind of wish it was someone else. I want Bullseye back, just in a different way. But other than that, it was such a great piece of atmospheric storytelling.

Bullseye is incredibly intelligent.

If all he had was his uncanny aim and abilities, he'd not be half as deadly. It's knowing how to push Matt's buttons without doing anything lethal, and loving what he does. He was always just content with being pointed in the direction of a target, but now he has to deal with things differently.

Just read this and oh man, this is fantastic. You guys might have to stop reviewing it because it's deserves 5 stars every time. I can completely buy Bullseye as a big bad here. It's been eluded to in the past that he actually has an insane amount of money squirreled away meaning that he could have the resources to mess with Matt the way he does.
