Cow Boy: A Boy and his Horse #1 - HC

5

Nate Cosby and Chris Eliopoulos bring you the story of a ten year old bounty hunter. That's really all you need to know. It's great. There's also stories by other cool folks as well.

You may have caught a glimpse of the adventures of this ten year old bounty hunter. If not, you owe it to yourself to find out more.

The Good

It was back in January when Archaia first sent a look at this release. Seeing Nate Cosby and Chris Eliopoulos talk about it on Twitter immediately caught my interest. If you're familiar with the works from either of these two, you have an idea what to expect. Simply put, it's the story of a ten year old cowboy, hunting down the outlaw members of his family. It's a kid on a horse. It's freakin' hilarious. The combination of Cosby and Eliopoulos makes this an instant favorite. I could go on and on about how much fun this was but you really should check it out for yourself. Throughout the entertainment, you'll even find a statements about life, race and violence during the time period of the Old West.

And given that it's from Archaia, you know the hardcover is going to be in a great package. They know how to make hardcovers look remarkable.

It's not just Cosby and Eliopoulos in the 100-page release. Other stellar creators contributing their own stories are Roger Langridge, Brian Clevinger, Scott Wegener, Colleen Coover and Mike Maihack. These tales are mixed in between the chapters of Cow Boy's story. Reading these feels like you're getting extra bonus content while enjoying the main story.

The Bad

We need more Cow Boy ASAP.

The Verdict

It's not often you get a comic that is fun, entertaining and a delight to read. COW BOY by Nate Cosby and Chris Eliopoulos is a treat. People read comics for different reasons. There are several different types. This is a comic anyone could read. You'll immediately be drawn to Eliopoulos' familiar art style and you'll become engrossed by Cosby's stories of the young bounty hunter. On the surface, it might appear to be a simple novelty of a comic but reading it will make you see that there are indeed layers to the story. It's not just a funny book about a kid on a horse. This simply is great stuff. There are subtle hints at some minor adult themes but they are so light that young readers won't even catch them. The hardcover release looks as great as you'd expect coming from Archaia. This is a book I will be proud to keep on my daughter's bookshelf. There are also other great stories in between the 'chapters' of COW BOY. Each feels like an added extra bonus in an already superb release. We can only hope that we will see more COW BOY in the immediate future.

Cow Boy was my favorite story in Archaia's FCBD hardcover. No TPBs or graphic novels for me for a while though. Got an accumulated stack of unread ones in my room at home.
