Convergence Justice Society of America #2 - One Last Time

4

The JSA comes together to fight for their world.

The Good

What Convergence Justice Society of America does really well is deliver a classic, pre-52, JSA story that is actually a lot of fun as we get to see the team go up against a giant robot for the fate of their city, made by the weaponers of Qward. We get this fun battle which makes the reader completely forget about the chaotic madness that is this event. Writer Dan Abnett takes the time to tell his story without the event controlling everything that happens. More importantly, what happens on here has no bearing on the main Convergence book, so this story just sits all nice in its own little pocket.

This book, like every Convergence book, is really made for fans of the characters specific to each book. It's been a few years since we've gotten to see Doctor Fate, Hawkman, Green Lantern, and The Flash team up and duke it out with someone or something. Sure, we currently have the Earth 2 versions of these characters but it's just not the same, according to original JSA fans, me being one of them. There's just something special about a team who once fought alongside each other in World War II and continue to battle again, in modern times.

The book ends with the four main characters, out of costume, and old. It's the nice little moment of closure for the story and its characters that really humanizes these heroes after their long battle.

The issue delivers some pretty good art from Tom Derenick (pencils), Trevor Scott (inks), and Monica Kubina (colors) that really captures the style fans of the JSA were used to in pre-52 DC comics. The action looks good and is full of movement and there's tons of stoic panels featuring these characters looking their best. The colors of Doctor Fate's helmet during some of these panels is wonderful looking and portrays the reflectiveness of said helmet.

The Bad

It was a fun story and not much more. It's probably one of the more entertaining stories we've seen within the the two-part Convergence stories, but what makes things a bummer is knowing that we won't see these characters again.

The Verdict

It truly was great to see at least a few of the members of the JSA back together again, fighting the good fight. Abnett had a great handle on who these characters are and alongside Derenick, Scott, and Kubina, they executed an issue that will bring fans of the team back to a time where the JSA was one awesome team. If you're a fan of the team, you'll want to pick this issue up. If not, I'll give it a mild recommendation, especially if you just want to see a fist fight for a whole issue.
