Convergence Booster Gold #1 - Ride the Wave Part I

4

Booster Gold teams up with Booster Gold

The Good

Booster Gold teams up with Rip Hunter to find Rip's father, a Booster Gold from another universe who has been imprisoned and is dying.

There is a lot to love here for Booster fans and DC fans in general. First thing's first. There's no speech from Telos in this issue, which is something I'm quite tired of reading. If you've read more than a few of these books, you're probably tired of that moment interrupting the issue as well. The thing is this issue just goes and tells its own story, within the world of Convergence.

The book starts off fun and continues the whole way through. Writer Dan Jurgens has such a great understanding of the character. That sounds silly because Jurgens is the creator of this character, but Booster has evolved in the past (almost) 30 years and Jurgens takes that into account while working with this character. There's still the snide remarks here and there, but he doesn't come off as silly or over-the-top, like we've seen with some versions of this character.

At some point, Booster, Booster, and crew do head to the world where Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes are all hanging out, which does lead to a typical "this world verses that world" fight. However, it's not the focus because one of the Booster Gold's is dealing with some problems, which sends him through time. It's a really cool twist to the whole Convergence thing, which leads to that final page...

The final page will make Booster Gold fans everywhere so happy. Why? Well, Ted Kord appears. That's enough there to buy the next issue. Who doesn't want to see the return of Blue and Gold?

The art is decent. There's times Alvaro Martinez and Raul Fernandez work and other times where it falls flat. However, colorist Chris Sotomayor does some wonderful work in the color department to really make this book pop, visually. His shading and color choices are fantastic, as well as the detail when it comes to light sources and backgrounds. Sotomayor's color work is the visual star of this issue.

The Bad

Boy oh boy. This is a confusing issue. I'm a fan of Booster Gold, but I never read TIME MASTERS: VANISHING POINT nor do I know anything about Skartaris, so a lot of this issue left me scratching my head. Why did I get this if I'm not familiar with the elements? Booster Gold is in it.

The Verdict

Some of the best issues during the Convergence event stand on their own because they tell their own stories in this world without letting the overall event take control of the book, and that's exactly the case with this issue. This is a really fun story made for Booster Gold fans. Sure, there's moments where some readers may be a little confused, but what this issue does really well is take the reader on a journey with some characters that may not fit extremely well into this whole event. Check this issue out for sure if you're a fan.
