Catwoman #0 - Zip Me Up

2

Catwoman's origin is revealed, and it reads a lot like something we've seen before.

The Good

I have to say that for the most part I felt that Adriana Melo's art in this issue was pretty good. Catwoman is drawn to be really pretty and the panels are really well organized. She is depicted as sexy without being too gratuitous. I definitely prefer her work over that of Guillem March. I think she is better suited on this title. I am also really glad DC opted to change the cover a little bit.

The Bad

If you want to find out how Catwoman came to be Catwoman, all you really have to do is sit back, grab some popcorn and pop in you 'Batman Returns' DVD. You know, the Tim Burton directed Batman movie starring Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman and Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne? Yeah, that one. There is literally a word-for-word scene in this issue of Catwoman that was used in that movie. Now, I have nothing against Tim Burton's Batman films. In fact, I think they are great. But they are also a complete departure from the characters in the comics.

Okay, so if you are going to take a series and change everything about it and the central character in that series, then you damn well better have a good reason to do so. I am so disappointed with this interpretation of the Catwoman character. It's a bunch of scenes we've already seen. Here we have Selina who is confronted by a man who is in control of her life. She asks too many questions so he decides to throw her off the roof of a building to solve his problem. She falls several stories to the ground and is then licked back to health by a bunch of stray cats. This is a great scene in Batman Returns. It is one of the most memorable moments in that film for me as a fan of the character. Which is why I recalled this scene so vividly because I have already watched it a dozen times over. It was a great moment in the film, but now it is cannon in comics? Really? Couldn't the writer come up with her own version of Catwoman's story? Does she really not have any ideas of her own? If you're going to disregard 40 plus years of canonical comic book history, you better have an adequate story to replace it with instead of a rehash from a movie that everyone reading this comic book has already seen. I am incredibly disappointed in this book.

In addition to the fact that we've already seen this scene play out in the movies, there's also the issue of Catwoman's motivations. Is she that much like a cat that she is enthralled and entranced by shiny things? Is that the basis for all the stealing? There has to be more to her motivations than this, right? This series was never very deep, from the very beginning. Yet, at least at the start there was some direction. This issue just read like a bunch of scenes were thrown together at random, and you get the sense that Nocenti doesn't really have a grasp of who the character is and what her motivations are. Selina has come too far in the years she has existed in comics to just be a shallow girl who likes to steal because she likes to collect shiny things.

I was also hoping to see some mention of Lola, who we saw in the first couple of issues of this series, but that didn't happen.

The Verdict

What exactly happened in this issue? I feel like a good zero issue is one that gives the reader a better understanding of who the character is and what their motivations are. After reading this book, I don't have a better understanding of Catwoman, who she is, why she does what she does and where she came from. I understand that Nocenti is taking over a book from a different writer and thus she will have a different vision for the character and the series, but there needs to be some kind of consistent vision for the character when you relaunch an entire comic book universe.

This is extremely disappointing to read! With how supremely this title has failed so far, you'd hope they'd step it up. And if they're gong to steal Catwoman from a movie, why not the Selina Kyle from DKR?! With all the popularity the character has gathered from the movie you'd hope DC would want to make Catwoman one of their leading ladies. Especially since she has the history, staying power, and name recognition to back it up.

Catwoman used to be one of my favorite female characters. And when she's done well, she is! But she's definitely on the pile of failed New 52 characters. :(

i can't read this series i really just...can't, but you mean to tell me they actually just went the whole burton route? that's just... where dc sucked before the new 52 has gotten better (except superman, ha) and where it was remarkable they've just kind of said screw it to some of the characters histories who we all know and love so much (the books are good, and i can't comment on GL but i know most people say it's great) it just feels like they're sort of demolishing years upon years of batman lore just for this. sorry the book sucked to read so much

The worst part?

Ann Nocenti is mostly known for writing Daredevil, and one of her characters, Typhoid Mary, is a villain because she was accidentally knocked over the side of a building by Matt Murdock and she miraculously survives. So yeah...

I think she's just the default writer for characters who have lost all appeal after the reboot (looking at you, Green Arrow).

HOWEVER, if she had written in Christopher Walken, I would have personally given it 5 stars.

Ann has shown me that she is losing her touch. Green Arrow is a mess, and with this being her first Catwoman issue, it seems that she is just pushing away whatever Judd did, which wasnt bad at all. Its just disappointing. The art wasnt that spectacular either, but it wasnt awful

Mann there is just no hope for this Catwoman book lol DC should cancel this series and just give us a Shazam series already! I mean i checked the sales on this book and they are less than saddening. it's in the top 100 but still they're not gaining much, It's so dumb, i mean we get a Shazam back up which we basically are paying a $1 per backup added to the justice league. if DC put the Shazam series out for $3 (written and drawn GOOD) then they'd have another title to ring in the big bucks, but instead theyre still putting this fan-favorite bat character out which is only disappointing the fans....I mean Come on DC, what are you thinking!?!?

and not to mention that but i never heard anybody say before the 52 "Oh they BETTER have Catwoman as a series in the new 52!!" or "they better not cancel Catwoman!?" maybe some, but the majority most DEFINITLEY wanted a Cap. Marvel/Shazam series! STILL DO. i don't want to have to read a $4 justice league title(which i dont even like that much) just to read a few pages of a Shazam story.

-this rant brought to you buy Adam :)

I've always disliked the Burton origin. Heck I've always disliked the Millar version despite enjoying Batman Year One.The Batman TAS one I guess has been my most favorable but the whole supernatural Burton cats was just always beyond stupid.

CATWOMAN #0 parody posted by DCWomenKickAss.com
CATWOMAN #0 parody posted by DCWomenKickAss.com

Before I read the review, I have to mention that it's telling when the Bad section makes up four paragraphs. Now, on to the reading.

DC changed the cover for this issue. Huh? I missed all that. I just looked up that previous cover art. There sure were certain 'liberties' with anatomy in that one. Some of the other parodies I've found online are pretty funny.

I can't believe they actually went to the well for the "revived from the dead by alley cats". Did they not see what an absolute bomb the CATWOMAN movie was? I hated that in BATMAN RETURNS. Not to belittle your affections for those movies, Sara; but they also had Batman killing. Catwoman doesn't need to be some cat cliche. She's a cool character in the same way Batman is. They are self made. They chose their path. No mystic or super origin behind them. Now, Catwoman can apparently be easily defeated by distracting her with a laser pointer. How did this get past DC editorial?

I almost don't want to believe this could actually be true. I'm not one for constant reboots, but this needs to be undone fast. Far as I'm concerned, Catwoman's origin is told in BATMAN: YEAR ONE.

Gotta agree, I can't think of an issue where Catwoman was done worse. Though two stars is too generous. Aside from the horrible cheesy origin and need to have a tragic event explain who she is, she doesn't even like or enjoy being Catwoman. "Why am I like this? Why am I doing this?". Good grief. And now her big thing is looking into her mysterious Russian family. What happened to the confident fun loving thief with a heart of gold? Nooooo.

@NlGHTCRAWLER:

If only. In Batman Returns Catwoman at least post transformation oozes confidence and likes what she's doing. The mess done to her character here doesn't allow her any pleasure in what she's doing, and she's just a slave to terrible plotting.

I feel kinda disappointed that Catwoman's rich history is reduced to one arguable mediocore movie ?! I mean make some effort will you ? She is so much more than this and I feel kinda sad how she is ''shallowed down'' like this. She had so much layers before the ''reboot'' but now she is turning into a one-dimentional character of ''Sex and screwups !'' with some skippets from the movies..It is sad to see all the developements we saw in years waste away like this.

Getting a feeling this is going to get cancelled soon. I don't know if I agree with the whole "Batman Returns is a great film" thing by the way. It's a pretty depressing and incoherent mess of a film.

this issues artist doesnt hold a Candle to Guillem March, never ONCE did catwoman look sexy or attractive to me, and none of the action scenes had even a once of the animation and intensity march infused in his art work during such scenes.

and march is NOT all bloody about cheesecake ether, and is facial expessions are extremly well done

OH DON'T EVEN, this series was PLENTY deep when Winick was on it. It's NOW with Ann Nocenti that it's been ruined. I love how everyone was ready for her to 'fix' something that wasn't broken, but now Nocenti's even worse then everyone said Winick was.

and on this day Judd Winick and cried as we pushed each other off the roof.

This was awful. i mean i knew was going to be, this written by the woman who ruined green arrow but i had hopes. the opening scene i thought selina was working under cover so she could steal something but no nocenti isnt that bright. the way the scenes were played out were so disjointed it look like a printing error. what's wrong with starting at the beginning and working your way to the end instead of starting at the middle, go back a year, go back to the middle, go to the beginning, back to the middle and then jump some years to the present. its a hot mess. there was ONE good sequence and that was little selina stealing and we learn she was made into a thief by the woman who ran the youth home she lived in. that's cool but that was literally three pages. now they give her a batman returns origin which i wouldnt mind except for the fact that Judd Winick never mentioned this. also now she has a brother and not a sister? she doesn't know who she really is and apparently selina kyle isnt her real name??? crap crap crap. BRING BACK JUDD WINICK AND THE ARTIST. CATWOMAN WAS PERFECT BEFORE THIS

Her "vision" is Burton's vision. I hated THAT, but this is worse because it's derivative of that. It's like being a Uwe Boll rip-off. What's worse, the garbage or the person thinking that the garbage is worth copying?

What a god-awful issue. I almost stopped reading. I never, ever do that. Ever.

"Oh, wow! I left a perfect human silhouette through the canope that just so happens to have cat ears."

Get out of here with that noise, man. Miss me with all that. Dropping the title. I normally give writers a chance, but Nocenti expecting me to accept this? Insulting.

Hated the issue. I mean, the thing with the cats works in Burton's Batman movies, but we seriously don't need that in the comics. When I came to said page I actually put it aside for a while and didn't want to continue reading. Plus, of course, it's completely unoriginal.

Also all the previous issues it's been hinted that Selina was once a prostitute, where is that now? Did Winick decide to distance himself from his original idea when his depiction of Catwoman was criticized for being sexistic?

I think DC dropped the ball when they decided to let Ann Nocenti take over for the origin. Judd Winnick wrote the first issue and laid down the tracks, he should have been in charge of the origin story. I don't think this issue was horrible, but it certainly wasn't very good either. I do have to say that ripping off Batman Returns is pretty stupid.

Also it feels like the pacing is really off. It just jumps around all over the place. I don't have much hope for Nocenti if this is how she writes. This is the first thing I've read by her however, so I'm willing to give her a chance for a while. That being said it would make me very sad to have to drop this title. I really do like Catwoman as a character, and I like reading comics with her. If DC cancels this or if the writing just keeps being this generic, I'd drop it. I do really miss the old creative team. Gulliem March's art is fantastic and I really liked what Winnick was doing with Selina's story. Here's hoping that October's issue will be better or I'm only going to be getting my Catwoman fix from that new JLA book she is in.

Hey remember when Darwyn Cooke wrote Catwoman? Yeah...those were the days, man.

I do indeed. However, this implies that...you know...EVERY writer before Nocenti didn't do a better job, haha.

Winick wasn't Cooke or Brubaker. I understand the feel that she's been simplified and over-sexualised, though I may not necessarily agree, but he still held my attention for a year. You know? I didn't have a problem paying whatever the price is for an issue of Catwoman.

I would've felt let down if someone gave this issue to me for free, to be quite honest, Sara.

You may or may not agree with this, but the thing I hate most in comics/movies or whatever else that contains a story/narrative is when I'm insulted. I don't mind if you put out a movie or comic that I watch and just don't click with, or think is crap. It's when I, as a reader or viewer, am being treated like I am so stupid as to accept NONSENSE. Ann Nocenti clearly thought people would read this and say, "Ok. This all makes perfect sense and doesn't assume we're all idiots."

That's what bothers me. It's like when Michael Bay expects me to just sit there and accept the things he does in his movies. It's not on.

Catwoman should be written by someone like Brubaker or Rucka.

DC has so far missed a great opportunity given Catwoman's role in TDKR. It's like Nocenti got the memo about a Batman movie but it was Batman Returns! And I love Batman Returns...but c'mon, Nolan's Catwoman (which is more true to the comics anyways) would have been much more appropriate and topical.

This comic was just plain bad. The pacing was off and the narrative was extremely poor. The art was pretty decent in most panels, but the dialogue just felt off throughout. I actually felt bad for the character Selina Kyle while reading this, as if she somehow knew just how screwed over she was getting. After reading this issue and seeing as how Nocenti is now on this title for a while, the Joker crossover may be the only thing that keeps me reading this title for another month or two.

Not the first time and won't be the last, the list of titles Ann Nocenti's ruined has a new entry. To even think that co-opting that scene would be "okay" is what bothers me the most. She can't really think that there would be no backlash is a sign of giving up, sorry but trashing up one of the most beloved character in comics HISTORY should be a reason enough to be fired. Won't buy it, don't wanna contribute to her bankaccount in any way, and refuse to until shes a million miles from the Batman universe.......worst thing to come from the New 52 imo

Why couldn't they have just let Winick write the #0 issue before he left? Why couldn't they have just begged Winick to write the #0 issue before he left?

This is a convoluted, cheesy, horribly written mess of an issue that has me dropping Catwoman from my pull list... which is something I have never even considered doing since getting into comics.
