Cataclysm #0.1 - Vision Review

5

Vision sets off into space to stop Galactus from destroying the universe

The Good

The Vision feels the only way to stop Galactus from destroying the universe is to go up there herself. Can she stop this force? The answers are all within this very emotional issue.

As far as bridging the gap between HUNGER and the upcoming main CATACLYSM story, this book does a fantastic job. It follows Vision throughout the issue, but her story collides with the end of HUNGER.

Ultimate Vision was one of my least favorite characters in the Ultimate Universe. I never understood the appeal. That being said, writer Josh Fialkov does a fantastic job with this character and story. It's compelling and incredibly emotional. I became enthralled with what was going on with a character I thought I would never truly like. It's a great journey of a woman/android who tries to understand the human concept of love for the world she came from and for the person she loves.

The dialogue between Vision and Galactus really emphasizes this, as well as the fantastic narration that takes place throughout the issue. You really get a feel for both of these characters and start to understand that while everything seems hopeless in this mini-series, it may not be.

There's two particular lines of dialogue I really want to point out. I'll black them out for those who want to remain in the dark, even though neither of them are spoilers. "Their finest, bravest warriors are our damaged, conflicted soldiers" & "You come from a reality made of might and marvels." That is the perfect way to describe the differences between the 616 and Ultimate universes. No one has put it like that, that I know of, in the years the Ultimate Universe has existed. This is a home run.

You don't have to read this issue to read CATACLYSM, at least it feels like that; however, this is a book you should read if you love Marvel and/or the Ultimate Universe. It really puts everything into perspective, and puts Ultimate fans at a bit of ease with what's been going on in their world.

The Bad

The only real problem with the issue is the fact three different artists worked on it, and there's really no reason, storywise, for it. Mico Suayan, Mirco Pierfederici, and Leonard Kirk all work on this book. Individually, their styles are all great, in their own right, but together, in the same book the switch is a little distracting. The way faces are drawn and inking styles seem to be the most noticeable. It's not a big deal though.

The Verdict

Sometimes, a story is just so dang good that you can overlook some minor problems. CATACLYSM #0.1 is a very emotional story which is a great bridge between two story lines. It's pretty rare that an issue can evoke real emotion from a reader, and this issue nails that. Fialkov has a lot of love for these characters and this universe and it really shows here. While the art switch became a tad distracting, even though all three artists were great on their own, this story was just so appealing to me as an Ultimate fan. If this issue doesn't get you excited for CATACLYSM, check your pulse because you're probably dead.

I wasnt looking forward to reading this when I saw it in my pull list but after that review I am!!

I really hope that they can pull out a win against Galactus....as cool as it would be to see Miles interact with characters in the 616 I'm afraid that if the Ultimate Universe ends and he's moved to the 616 that he'll fade into limbo

Posted by RisingBean

@danhimself: I hope the Ultimate heroes win for the sheer fact that after nearly 15 years of collecting the Ultimate stuff, to have everybody fall down and die will be a slap in the face. If Marvel absolutely has to end the U.U. then lets go out with our heroes being heroes.

@risingbean: we know that Miles is going to go to the 616 to try and find some way to defeat him....I think that leaves 2 options

1. the Ultimate Nullifier - it would have the power to defeat Galactus but at the cost of the entire Ultimate Universe

2. He brings the Avengers back with him....that's the one I want to happen....to have the Avengers and the Ultimates fight side by side against the biggest threat to both universes...that would be just plain awesome

This was such a great issue. The feels, man, the feels!

So we either get

1. Fifteen years of stories that amount to nothing. I may as well read the Cthulhu mythos if I want to be that nihilistic.

2. Or a crossover that shows what a tool Quesada is. He said something that when we start getting these crossovers the well has run good and dry.

Granted it may be cool to see an out of continuity crossover, but if it happens here it feels like the Ultimate is being bullied and running to big brother for help.

I really loved this issue

Vision repeating Reed Richards at the end gave me the chills

I'm so behind... Haven't finished reading Hunger.

Still, I'm glad this delivered. I've been waiting for something that redeems Ultimatum and it seems like this might be it.

Has this been adressed yet? ------>

Not yet but it will probably be addressed when Miles goes to the 616

and it was the best mini possibly the best book of the year

@danhimself: I'll consider reading it if I can find it at the library. The word I get is it is good but I am not fond of crossovers concerning the Ultimate U. Also I am not a Miles fan. As a matter of fact I still am pissing vinegar over Pete dying and would light Bendis on fire if he knocked on my door.

Posted by danhimself

@risingbean: have you reread Ultimate Spider-man again since Peter has died? The book becomes even better because of his death

Posted by RisingBean

I'm up to the Carnage arc for Pete.. I'm rereading ALL of my Ultimate titles so I'm in the middle of Ultimate Nightmare if we want to be specific.

I can agree how sobering it is when everybody routinely tells Pete this or that is going to get him killed.

Dan's right, that is probably the best mini in a really long time. It ties loose ends with the cast after the death of Ultimate Peter and it is an original story all on its own.

It merits a buy rather than a library check-out.

@sora_thekey: Feh! I already have a 700 dollar cart. But depending on what it's costs I'll either buy it or put it on a que for later. If I dislike it I'll hold the two of you responsible for the downfall my life has become, wear garish colors and become a supervillain.

I'm already predisposed to disliking Bendis and Miles but I'll try to keep an open mind. If I'm wrong, well it won't be the first time.

Don't worry, if you do end up becoming a supervillain @danhimself and I will best you like the good super heroes we are...

I know I only skim through Ultimates and actually missed the last couple, but didn't Tony have his brain hacked in half and die?

SPANDEX!!!! ALL SPANDEX!!!!

Dude! Believe me, you don't want to see me in spandex. My super hero attire would be more like Agents of SHIELD or Hawkeye in the movies.

Or maybe even an Assasins Creed type hoodie.

Posted by danhimself

@sora_thekey: I would dress in all spandex and call myself The Awkwardian

Posted by sora_thekey

@danhimself: With that kind of super hero name I would sarcastically say everything calling myself The StraightMan. :P

@risingbean: If the Avengers do show up, you're right. it's like the Ultimates are running to their big brother. great way of saying that. While I don't think the well is dry, I just don't think they have enough good talent on the Ultimate titles. Marvel has used it more as a way for a stepping stone for young writers, and it's made the stories suffer at times. They got lucky when it was just Bendis and Millar on the titles, but look at those 2 guys now. Huge writer, who have written a few classics between them. I would have liked to have seen more established writers on these titles and give a great idea a great handling. When Hickman was on the Ultimates he was killing it. Fialkov is okay, but he's not great. Bendis on USM is still great, but that because it's Bendis on USM. Marvel needs to handle this universe better and give it the proper writers it deserves, because there are a lot of us who have invested a lot of time on the Ultimate U, and to just have it blow up is pretty shitty. We've been riding the ups and downs of the universe, because when it's good, it's great. I remember preferring the Ultimate Universe to the 616 when it just came out on pretty much every title. X-Men, Spider-Man, FF, and The Ultimates. Now tho...................Only S.M. gets my nod on that now.

Edited by RisingBean

@jamdamage: I agree with everything you say. Well except that I prefer Ultimates to the rest. I'm not too pleased that Pete got killed off and reset Spider-Man's hero journey. A lot of why I don't dig 616 Spidey was I missed all the stuff I enjoyed. I prefer his 60's stories to be honest.

I liked that in Ultimate SM we got to be in on the ground floor with our continuity. Now we're finally to the point of Pete training with Captain America and rubbing elbows only to have him be killed. Lets reboot with a new guy who seems just like Pete and start over. Really? Because I don't like it.

I plan to give Spider-Men a read at the behest of some fellow viners. But in general principle I don't like killing off hero A to bring out Clone B tomorrow. Ok rant over.

Yeah if Marvel treated Ultimate U. with the same respect it did 616 then I think that they would do better on the whole. I'm moving a lot of my business to DC and Valiant because Marvel keeps screwing up. They had reeled me back in with the Ultimate U. I even took risks on some 616 I may not have. But if the publisher wants to beat me up emotionally, I'm not sticking around for that.

@danhimself: @sora_thekey: Hahah. You two are a dynamic duo alright. Good chemistry.
