Captain Marvel #1 - Higher, Further, Faster, More. Part One

5

Carol Danvers likes Star Wars and punching things. We like Carol.

The Good

Carol Danvers is back. She didn't really leave -- it's just an All-New #1 -- but she did present us with two very excellent things: (1) a great on-boarding point for new readers (Welcome to the Carol Corps!) and (2) a wide new world of story potential. SPACE, right?

No major shake-ups or redesigns character-wise, but I'm inclined to think that Carol & Co. look pretty darn great pencilled by David Lopez. The book is a little less stylized than the earlier run, and Lopez (with colors by Lee Loughridge) delivers clean, dynamic panels. Carol flies, punches, and yells with passion, and even the more grounded scenes feel animated. I'm especially keen on the suit-up sequence we get mid-issue (it's a single panel, but you'd swear there was movement).

Kelly Sue DeConnick knows how to connect with her fan base -- and I'm not just talking about the Carol Corps. She's excellent about slipping pop culture references into dialogue (multiple Star Wars nods, anyone?) without making it feel forced or inauthentic to a character's voice. Carol comes across as someone I'd want to hang out with; it's a welcome level of accessibility for a mainstream hero. DeConnick also brings other Marvel Universe characters into a solo book more seamlessly than anyone; everything feels truly organic, because of course other Avengers would be on the scene for critical Earth-saving missions (or even street-level ones). Iron Patriot and Iron Man very much have a natural place in this issue; as much as Kit or any of Carol's title-specific supporting cast (and the ensuing banter is just charming).

There's bonus backmatter in this book that I won't spoil, except to note that it's utterly cheerful.

Oh yeah, and "I want to go to space" might just be the best possible way to say adios to someone you're dating. Avenger status optional.

The Bad

Are there more ads in this book than usual, or are they just weirdly placed? There's a loss of seamlessness when a conversation is started (and the next page reveals the other party) and an ad is placed in between (I'm looking at you, Super Hero Mashers ad).

The Verdict

Higher, Further, Faster, More. Arc title or mantra for this All-New Marvel Now! flavor of Carol & Co.'s adventures? There might be a new #1 on the cover, but CAPTAIN MARVEL is still in the capable hands of Kelly Sue DeConnick, which means we're going to get an exciting mix of high-action stories and genuine character moments. Space seems like a most excellent frontier for this All-New story direction, and I'm sure the pairing of DeConnick and Lopez will make for a wild and exciting journey.

This and mighty Avengers are now currently my favourite comics, great story, characters and art. May they both continue to be excellent.

People who don't read this because she has a different costume and a slightly different name are, quite frankly, fools.

Sweet. Read the first story arc of the original series and it was great. Glad this is a jumping-on point, because I'd love to read this.

@captainmarvel4ever: Or are you just mad that the rights to the name "Captain Marvel" have legally reverted back to Marvel?

@jaken7: (Sorry if you revived more than one message, sometimes I screw up the reply system on this site)

I was almost sure my user name and profile pic would give it away. I don't like the fact that Marvel and DC are playing the same litigious game from decades ago, I think Billy should still have that name. Yes I realize that may seem immature, (although if someone actually does have a problem with her hair, then that's just takes immaturity to a new level) but I strongly feel that Billy should have the name he has had for over 70 years. Other then that I have no other problems with Carol, or her respective writers/artists.

Carol is one of the best characters in comics right now in my opinion. She's strong, charismatic, has an awesome power set and is very beautifully drawn. I hope she makes it to the MCU. I prefer her as Ms Marvel, but I still love her character.

@captainmarvel4ever: I know, I got it right with the second guess. I'm on my phone so it doesn't show profile pics, and I thought your name was in reference to Carol. The thing is, DC never had the rights to the name Captain Marvel. They had the rights to Billy Batson, his alter-ego, SHAZAM!, and everything else. DC bought out the character in '72 from Fawcett Comics who had been publishing the character since '39. Before DC did that though, Marvel bought the rights to the name Captain Marvel. That's why Billy has always been advertised and promoted as "Shazam!", but called Captain Marvel in the comics (because that didn't fall under Marvel's jurisdiction). Marvel and DC have not been having legal battles at all, it was DC's conscience decision to just call him Shazam in the New 52 for 3 reasons 1. Respect for Marvel, 2. To make it less confusing for readers (especially when he'd been referred to as Shazam on-and-off for years) and 3. To unify the Billy Batson brand.

I'm sorry if you have a problem with it, but it's not as dramatic as you're making it sound.

@missj: Awesome! I just read through his explanation of his scrapped long term plans for Nightwing over on the Wing-Nut forums. I got pretty depressed after reading it because it sounded like such an amazing character defining arc for Nightwing, and I really wish we could've read it. I hope he or another writer can pick up those story threads in the future.

I loved #29 though, and he definitely knows how to end a run. He will most certainly be missed on that book. I look forward to his work on Batman Eternal!

Oh, and I'm excited for C.O.W.L. too! ^_^

In all honest I still find this just as average as her last series. I used to love Carol, but Marvel is trying to push her to be top tier so bad. Her last series just tried to hype her up and say how great she was without showing anything to prove she's great. I just find it a lot less interesting that they pretty much want to disregard Carol as Ms Marvel because of her past. I still think that Carol as Ms Marvel was vastly superior to her as Captain Marvel. Also her costume looks way to similar to Mar-Vell's. It seems like this is the dark age of Carol for me.

By all accounts, this is literally the first we see them in any kind of relationship. And they immediately call it off so she can go on her cosmic walkabout. Kinda makes you wonder what the point was.

Still, great first issue. Hopefully this new volume goes better than the last.

@captainmarvel4ever: Nothing to do with Marvel, I agree adC should have stuck with Captain Marvel, I'm sure they didn't loose the rights inside the shazam comic. Then again maybe DC sold the rights completely to Marvel and never told anyone.

This issue sets up a couple of important elements that will play out in the rest of the arc, but it's probably not entirely essential to follow. DeConnick has said that the opening arc is going to be six issues long, if that helps you make your decision one way or another.

I liked the issue in general, art and writing. I'm kind of interested in this space adventure, but not a fan of the pairing with Iron Patriot(I don't like the idea of Carol potentially being just thought of as somebodys' girlfriend by people only familiar with characters from the films).
