Captain America: The Winter Soldier

5

This movie is exactly what you'll want from a Captain America movie.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is the latest film from Marvel Studios. With so many installments in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, our expectations have reached a certain level. While many have loved those movies, there seems to always be some complaints or criticisms over the plot (or a lack of certain elements) and too much humor. This movie goes above and beyond what we would expect or want in the next installment.

A minor thing you may have noticed within each movie is they don’t pick up immediately from where the previous movie left off. Time has passed since the first Captain America movie as well as The Avengers. Steve Rogers is now working for S.H.I.E.L.D. and there’s a great sense of him simply throwing himself into his new role. As a man out of time, his focus is on fighting the good fight. Despite Black Widow’s encouragement for Steve to try to go out and unwind, being Captain America is all he really knows and wants.

No Caption Provided

That being said, we see much more to these characters than the simple superhero persona. A huge element of the movie is an issue of trust. We know that with government agencies like S.H.I.E.L.D., there is always something going on. Despite being isolated in his role of a protector and hero, we do get to see who Steve Rogers is. The same goes for Black Widow as well as Falcon, who is introduced in this movie. This aspect makes the characters feel more alive instead of having a big action movie with less substance. The returning characters here have been allowed to grow since we've last seen them.

With a callback to 70s spy thrillers, directors Joe and Anthony Russo give us a movie that doesn’t really feel like just another Marvel Studios movie. The movie is very driven by the plot with nice twists and turns. Some of those twists will be obvious to readers of the comics. But there will still be enough to keep you on the edge of your seat.

If you’re looking for action, you will find plenty here. It may not be the destruction of New York City at the hands of the Chitauri and Loki, but you will be amazed at what the filmmakers accomplished. There is so much to see in a wide variety of fight scenes. We are talking about Captain America. He’s a guy with the Super Soldier Serum running through his veins. You should be happy to know that we’ll get to see what makes Cap so super along with Black Widow, Falcon, and even Nick Fury.

Of course Winter Soldier gives plenty of conflict for the characters. Too often the villains in the Marvel Studios films end up being a little two dimensional. We know the struggle that Winter Soldier will have to face along with the ferocity he’s capable of. You can also assume he will not be the only antagonist our heroes will have to deal with.

No Caption Provided

As I mentioned, this isn’t just another Marvel Studios film. It’s a movie that will have a big impact on the landscape of the Cinematic Universe. Don’t expect a simple campy Cap movie struggling to find his way in modern times. This is heavy at times with some rich character development that makes you immediately crave more. There is some humor but it’s not as extreme as in some of the other movies.

Thinking back to the first movie, I liked this movie so much more than the first, which I did enjoy. How often can it be said that a sequel is better than the first? This movie simply feels bigger and deeper with more going on. Marvel Studios is building up their reputation with each movie they release. With Captain America: The Winter Soldier, I now have a favorite Marvel Studios movie. This is the movie that makes me happy and proud that I've been a Cap fan for so long. I cannot wait to see it again.

@viin: You do know that all reviews are accurate because they reflect the OPINION of the reviewer. Unless the reviewer is making stuff up. And I'm not sure who's Iron Man 3 review you were talking about but we didn't give it a five.

Looking forward to seeing this. I'm taking my son to see it opening weekend. Hoping to see it more than once if it's as good as everyone says it is. I love that Disney bought Marvel (I'm a huge fan of both). I just wish that Disney/Marvel had the rights to other Marvel movies like Xmen and Spiderman. Can you imagine what Disney/Marvel could do with the characters??? My mind would be blown. But for now, I will enjoy what movies are out now and look forward to all upcoming movies in the future.

oh no you don't!!

I've been burned too many times by people who say they really loved a marvel movie. Case in point, the wolverine, capt 1, ironman 2and 3 both thors.

Honestly, I learned my lesson after thor 2. But those that say they enjoyed this, I'm happy for ya!

My brother and I will be seeing it this weekend. I have been able to avoid what the mid- and post-credits scenes are so I am also excited about seeing what they are.

I thought it was good, really good but not a 5. At best a 4 for me. Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson are really good but i thought rest were kinda forgettable. Winter Soldier was to faceless with too little time to actually develop, most of the scenes with Bucky were there for Steve to get characterization and the other villain (i probably shouldn't reveal) were too two dimensional and a bit boring. And Rumlow, who was only there too give Sharon (another forgettable character) and Falcon (whom i liked) a adversary and too set him up for later.

And it felt like it was a bit too long which is probably because of the big cast and the Russo brothers TV mentally to give every character something to do, which is a blessing and a curse. But I agree with your other points. It's unique among the other MCU movies where it felt like it was its own beast and not by the Marvel machine, which has been my biggest complaint against the MCU. Also those fight scenes with Batroc and Winter Soldier were just fantastic. I could watch them all the time.

Now that's a great review! This has been my most anticipated solo Phase 2 film, and I'm glad people are loving it. The previous Phase 2 movies haven't wowed me (though the Mandarin twist was pretty smart), but it looks like that's about to change. So excited to see it this weekend. I probably won't think it's better than Avengers, though.

As long as you don't go see Sony and Fox's movies, you just might get your wish (it's my wish as well).

Its an amazing movie only second to Avengers in the MCU so i def recommend it. Seen it twice already even, it opened here in Nigeria on the 26th which was a nice surprise for us fan boys down here! Being a big fan of cap for a long time so i am glad they finally got it right this time especially after the first 1 which was imo just average. Next up, Spidey!

Saw the film last week when it came out in UK cinemas. All im going to say is that the film is absolutly fantastic and that you should all go and see it. Captains orders.
+ there are 2 after credit scenes for those of you who wanted to know if there were any. One halfe way through the credits and one right after (similar to the Avengers and Thor 2).

to me the best marvel film. It was awesome, they knew when to do a joke and there werent many. No character was there to add comedy. Almost all of the characters had a good time to show their motives.

The best thing about the movie is that not only did it use Brubakers run on Captain America for inspiration but also Hickman's Secret Warriors.

Even though i quite enjoyed EVERY marvel movie so far, please, let THIS be the new quality standard of the MCU from now on!

Im fully satisfied. I seriously thinking of watching it a second time in the cinema to fully get/appreciate every scene and every easter egg (the last and only Marvel-Studios flick i went to the cinema a second time was the Avengers, so that's seems to mean something, right?). Besides that many references, the movie itself isn't just a Avengers 2 prequel - it is standalone and awesome at that!

What I loved most about this movie were the dynamic and dialogue between Cap and Widow and the choreography of the fighting scenes. There were so many amazing new moves in Cap's repertoire, my friends and I ended up calling him Captain Kick after the movie. Remember that scene with Batroc?^^
