Captain America and Bucky #625 - Old Wounds, Pt. 1

5

Ed Brubaker is joined by James Asmus and Francesco Francavilla in giving us a story set both in the past and present day. There are some familiar faces showing up as a new mystery unfolds.

The all-star creative team of Ed Brubaker, James Asmus and Francesco Francavilla give us the beginning of a new arc that almost feels too massive to be contained in a single issue.

The Good

There is so much to like with this issue. It's a great week for Captain America fans. Now that this series is venturing into current continuity, that doesn't mean we've seen the end of Captain America's past. Normally I'm not a fan of flashback stories giving us new insights into characters' past but this (as with CAPTAIN AMERICA: PATRIOT) is something worth reading.

Asmus and Brubaker bring about a closer look at the immediate replacement for Captain America and Bucky after they disappeared in 1945. To make things more interesting, there is a connection the modern day. We have some new facts and a mystery unfolding including a pretty crazy last page that will leave you on the edge of your seat until next month's issue.

What can I say about Francesco Francavilla's art that I haven't said many times in other reviews. He art and colors always add an extra layer to the story. The way he uses the color mixed with his layouts of panels and images makes the pages have a unique feel you don't get from most comics.

With the introduction of a new character and the appearance of one that hasn't been seen or used much, reading this issue was a fun treat.

The Bad

Nothing.

The Verdict

Is it possible to get too much Captain America in one week? Not if the quality is as great as it is here. With a unique blend of flashback and current continuity, Brubabker, Asmus and Francavilla deliver an issue of Captain America that excels on many levels. I'm not normally a fan of flashback stories giving us new information but it works here and the connection to modern times makes an interesting story. Throw in suspense, action, guest appearances and an intriguing cliffhanger, there is so much to enjoy with this issue. The only problem will be having to wait until next month to find out what happens next.
